So I picked up Wild Adapter last night at my loal Borders and knowing it is by the same manga-ka is Saiyuki, I thought this should be good. I already read the one volume Bus-Gamer that was put out last year. Can I expect the same good things from Wild Adapter as I could from Sauiyki and Bus-Gamer? And does anyone know if there is anymore of Bus-Gamer? I heard it was just like a preveiw volume but was it really just a one shot?

Hmm, I have never heard of this particular series, but knowing that if it's from the author of Saiyuki and Bus-Gamer, then there's potential for the story. Bus-Gamer I thought was really good, with it's story and action, and development of the characters. I believe the magazine that the manga was serialized in got discontinued, but the author really wants to try and continue the series. It's just a matter of finding the right magazine and when the author has enough time to continue it again.

haha thats 2 of my useless posts youve replied to now. yea I hadn't heard of Wild Adapter either. I was just browsing and came across it. Than I came here and looked it up and it has a pretty good rating so I think I will be happy. It would be a lot easier if I could read the originals though. Really makes me want to get off my behind and finally learn more japanese. I just don't have the time right now.
So Bus Gamer was in a mag? See.. that I did not know. How many chapters were put out because the manga volume I think has 5 or 6 (I could be wrong, I haven't read it in a while). But it would be nice if he continued. Now if only he'd end Saiyuki. Wonder if that day will ever come? |

Usually all manga series are serialized in a magazine before they get printed in the tankoubon format. If a magazine gets cancelled, then the likelyhood that all the titles that are being run through it at the time of cancellation can be resurrected is pretty slim. Trigun was able to find resurrection though. And since the author wants to continue Bus-Gamer, there's hope for it.

I read the first volume a while back and thought it was pretty mediocre: the characters weren't very compelling, the plot wasn't particuarlly memorable and the author's storytelling is a bit cluttered in my opinion. I have a feeling the author really wanted to create another Banana Fish (classic shojo crime epic with homoerotic themes), but it doesn't have the same kind of grit or composition that BF had. I think a big reason its such a hyped title is because of the legion of Saiyuki-fans, and while I can see it appealing to a certian audience there are much better crime manga available in English.

My knowledge of Minekura's work is mainly limited to Saiyuki, but yes, Bus Gamer only ran for a short time and then there were issues with the magazine. Saiyuki actually switched magazines, too, for a reason I don't remember, but that's why it's Saiyuki RELOAD all of a sudden in the middle of everything. She still does Bus Gamer art, and I read somewhere that she does want to continue it. Her blog is at http://nitroblog.exblog.jp/ , so if you can read Japanese and you are unlike me and Japanese characters display as things other than ?????????????????????? on your computer, it might give you more insight.
I have the first volume of Wild Adapter in Japanese. I can't read Japanese beyond some hiragana (you don't learn much in one semester at college, and I graduated before I could get any further along), but I bought it at Acen last year to study the inking and the page layouts. If the first volume is slow, one of the main characters doesn't even really show up, anyway. There's also a, uh, alternate universe thing that's got the same characters from Wild Adapter, called "Araiso: Private High School Student Council, Executive Committee" or something. The thing to remember about Minekura's work is that there's a big gap between when a lot of it was started and now. For example, Wild Adapter 1 was published in 2001, whereas the latest volumes of Saiyuki were published in '05-'06. The art she's doing lately is superior to the stuff from 5 years ago; it's really interesting to watch the style develop. That's probably not super helpful, but try googling "Araiso" or "Wild Adapter" if you want to know more...there are fansites out there. |

so i actually sat down and read it last night. it isnt bad. they art is pretty much the same as Saiyukis was at the beginning. the page work is a bit dark, but that could also just be tokyopop's doing. the story itself isnt much to sneeze at since the story has been done more times than i can count, but i did like the main character...i like mysterious characters that I know nothing about until later volumes.
the one thing that did surprise me is the overly "gay" theme. i wasnt expecting that at all. but from what Kagemusha said, i can see why it seems like its trying to be a Banana Fish. wonder if it surfaces again with the main characters "stray cat" or if it stays platonic. hmmm I did like it though so I will pick up the next volume when it comes out. I really didn't see why it was 18+ but i think its just me. |

Hahaha, I'm pretty sure it doesn't stay platonic, if the promo and related art Minekura does for this series is any indication.

Sorry to raise a slightly dead thread, but let me tell you. Wild Adapter is, in my opinion, a first-class manga. I would KILL for this to some day be turned into an anime as well. I've got the first three books, and it gets wonderful.
It goes places Kazuya Minekura probably wishes she could go with the Saiyuki boys. There are, indeed, some instances of shonen-ai, but it's more of tease thing. Minekura likes doing that, especially in her Araiso series. Anyways, if you enjoy the Saiyuki manga, I would definitely recommend that you continue reading Wild Adapter. It's breath-taking. As you can guess, I'm a fan, it's even my avatar. |
