Hope someone here can provide some useful pointers for me:

I discovered Yukinobu Hoshino quite by chance, through the 2001 Nights series, I've never been into anime/manga before, but I like this sort of stuff, I've seen it described as hard science. So my questions would be if I like the 2001 Nights series, am I likely to like his other stuff too? Also, are there any other authors I might be interested in looking up also, that would be similar to Hoshino? I wouldn't be interested in fantasy-type stuff.

If you like 2001 Nights, you'll love The Two Faces of Tomorrow, the other series of his that's been released in English. It's based on sci-fi novel by James P. Hogan, and was recently re-released by Dark Horse.

As to creators similar to Hoshino, what is it about his work that you're into? If you like hard sci-fi, you'll probably dig Masamune Shirow, particularly his series Ghost in the Shell. If you like the tone and pacing of 2001 Nights, you'd probably like Planetes a lot, too.

Thanks for the reply. I like both aspects you mentioned, both the tone, and the fact that it's "hard".

I've recently gotten episodes 1-9 of Two Faces, waiting for it to arrive, but wished I'd seen that there is a full volume with all episodes - I might have trouble finding the other 4.

Also, on your recomendation, I've just got a DVD of Ghost in the Shell - reviews on IMDB looked good, it was cheap, so I thought what the hey.

Cool! Hope you like it. I'm assuming you got the original GitS movie? It and the manga are two very different animals (the anime spends a lot more time on the philosophical elements), but it's definitely one of my favorite movies. Let us know what you think! Very Happy
