|
I always wonder how many manga fans read comics other than manga. I personally read everything no matter where it's from. I love manga but I love U.s comics just as much, and flip flop while reading often. But for some reason just outside my mortal comprehension a lot will only read manga. So which are you?

I read good comics, regardless of what country they're from. I just recently updated my pull list at my shop, and it's at exactly 50 titles (in traditional floppy form), which includes the only 2 manga being published that way (GitS 1.5 and Blade of the Immortal). I'm also following....I dunno, maybe 15 manga series right now?
My "floppy" comics collection is probably 40% manga, 50% American superhero comics, and 10% other. My graphic novel collection is probably more like 1/3-1/3-1/3. |

Right now, I only read manga. I would occasionally read other comics like X-Men, Batman, Catwoman, or Spider-man, but their art styles and stuff just couldn't grab my attention enough. And sometimes the stories were just bogus. So for the past six years I've only been reading manga.

I read both, though I read a LOT more manga just because so much of the American comics are the long, sprawling sort and I prefer my stories much more contained. I have gotten into series like Sandman and Kabuki, as well as reading certain arcs of the superhero comics, like X-Men's original Dark Phoenix Saga or Batman Hush.

I would say that I am about 98% manga. The other 2% is made up of manhwa. I have dated many (well not MANY) guys who have read american comic books, and I have picked them up and given them a try, but I just don't have the same interest as when i am reading manga. It just holds my attention more for whatever reason.

Usually just manga and things that look like manga. I basically refuse to read Superhero comics anymore so that really eliminates around 90% of all mainstream American comics. I do read comic strips in the newspaper such as Get Fuzzy and Shoe, basically humor type stuff.

When you say that do you mean they weren't like manga enough for your tastes or something else? Because generally american comic's art styles are a lot more varied than manga's are. And I can see not liking some of them. Personally I love shake ups in art, helps a book from getting stale. |

the only non-manga comics i read are american gag comics. i love Mark Newgarden's big nose comics(he was also the creator of garbage pail kids if im not mistaken). the Pearls Before Swine strip is pretty good, and I recently started reading Dilbert. Old Peanuts strips are awesome too. oh yeah Penny Arcade as well.
anyhow, as far as american superhero comics go, i was never into them growing up, and even now i'll occasionally try to read one at the public library, but i just cant, i find them to be extremely boring in both looks and story. |

Most of the sequential art I purchase these days falls into the manga category, but I'll read things from lots of different places. The deciding factor for me is not where a series was published, but whether or not I find the story interesting. As a result my collection spans a variety of styles and genres, from sprawling superhero epics to slice of life love stories.

Pretty much 99% of my comic collection is manga. I like manhwa, but it's much eaiser to find manga in stores. I do buy the occasional Simpson's comic and I read Zits and Mitts in the paper, but that's the only other comics I read. I like manga art style a lot better, plus I like the story lines in manga. My favourite genres are horror, magical girl (weird combination I know), and historical, and I find most American comics sold in stores are male superhero, action and sci-fi. I'm sure there aren't any sci-fi superhero comics floating around, but the art in manga really draws my attention.

You should check out Girls and The Walking Dead, both from Image Comics. I would happily elaborate on how awesome they are, if you'd like.
One of the greatest historical comics I've ever read is Stagger Lee (also released by Image Comics). It's the story of "Stagger" Lee Shelton, a man who shot his friend Billy Lyons in a bar on Christmas Night 1895 because Billy had the nerve to steal his hat. The event spawned the trial of the (19th) century, and was immortalized in song by literally hundreds of artists over the years, from Bob Dylan to the Grateful Dead to the Clash. The Stagger Lee graphic novel relates not only what happened historically but also compares and contrasts the man and the myth. You can read this to read more about why I like this book so much. |

Heh, I thought this topic was about reading in general, as in "I read only manga, no magazines no books." ^__^
I don't own many comics besides manga, but I've read Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Sandman and those have to be up there on my list of amazing graphic novels. In fact I'd say that for pure intellectual value what little I've read of Western graphic novels beats the pants off of anything I've read manga-wise. This could be that I'm not reading manga directed at the right age level. When I want good entertainment or light reading I'll turn to my manga collection. Otherwise it's books and magazines for me. |

Also if you're in to ancient times 300 is really worth a read. Sure the movie is coming out (and it looks great), but man the hard cover edition is just increadibly awesome. |

OH YEAH! I totally forgot about that one. I have it, but I haven't finished it because I didn't want to spoil the movie for myself. Apparently there are tons of scenes in the movie that are taken cue for cue from the comic. I'm practically giddy with excitement.
