Okay, so I just finished this series yesterday after it took me forever to find the fifth volume, but I found it, read it, and that's that. Anyways, I definetly liked the series. It was in CLAMP fashion, one of their more comedic series, yet having a theme to push forward, even when the odds are against you. I felt though, that the ending was a little rushed, but still explained things without totally killing what the series had worked for to the end. I definetly recommend it to anybody and in my mind, it is kid friendly.

I really liked it too. I just dug out my volumes and noticed how worn they are from constant re-readings. The only problem I had with the manga was spoiler[Misaki's mother's reason for not being around]. I thought the anime made more sense out of it.

While I thought the Angelic Layer manga was a fun series to read to kill some time, I was disappointed in it as a whole and I thought the anime version was a large improvement over it. The manga was completely lacking in character development and it lacked the usual complex love triangles that are staples of Clamp manga. I also thought it was cheesy that Misaki just so happened to be a diehard fan of MKR without actually mentioning the name of the series. She even started singing lyrics to the third opening theme song during one chapter. It felt like Clamp was trying to indirectly advertise their own work without admitting they were. And Misaki was almost too cheerful for a girl who hadn't seen her mother since she was little. I thought the anime version did a better job of making Misaki a more believable middle school girl. I did enjoy the comedy in this series though, especially Icchan who always makes me laugh whenever he's around and the fights were exciting and creative. I love Clamp's art as usual and while the characterization could've been handled better, they were still a pretty likeable cast of characters all things considered. But the few relationships they did have felt too forced to me, especially how spoiler[Tamayo randomly hooks up with Ohjiro in the final chapter. That was just too out of left field. And Misaki's mother's reasons for being away all that time was just idiotic.] Still, Angelic Layer isn't a bad series and it's one I would definitely recommend to kids if they're looking for a good manga.

I definetly did not like the turnout of the situation between Misaki and her mother. It was that her mother was a little too shy, not being able to face her daughter after their match. I did however, appreciate CLAMP giving us an epilogue to the story after the story itself finished, which explained a few things here and there.

It's very kid friendly. I certainly would reccomend it for anyone wanting to get a younger sibling/cousin/child into manga or even interested in reading.

As for the relationship between Misaki and her mother in the manga vs. the anime...I like the anime version much, much better. As others have said, it makes more sense that her mother left because she was spoiler[ill rather than she was shy.]

I still like it though!

I most definetely agree. Backstory is usually interesting overall, and the anime handeled it much better than the manga did. And I also liked the epilouges at the end of the last 2 volumes.
And with Angelic Layer being kid-friendly? Most defintely. This got me into manga, and I was about 9 years old. The only things I might find objectionable is spoiler[Ichann being a little perverted in the beginning, Ohjiro just loving guessing what color Misaki's panties are, and Tamoyo's hints at being a lesbian (she's kidding of course, becuase she's Ohjiro's girlfriend at the end of the manga.) The latter really depends on your views on those topics- I just added it in a possibility.
And the robot action ,which I don't mind because the is no blood at all.

That is a very good reason to say that this manga is kid friendly. I recently ordered the first two DVD's for the series, and I would have to say that my timing was perfect in the finding the last manga volume to the series. Because now that I have gotten some very informing reactions to what I had to say, I can go at watching the anime and not being shocked at what I find.

It's not any worse than your average PG-rated CGI animated American cartoon with talking animals that make immature fart jokes. Even Tokyopop rated the manga A for all ages. Certainly I wouldn't recommend Angelic Layer to the youngest of children but I think if the child is old enough to be watching Naruto on Toonami, then Angelic Layer would be a walk through the park for them.
