Action with Kyoani blob girls?
Nerdy, ugly main girl to be in contrast to the "tall, mature perfect girl"?
2 bishies already feeling up each other?

I hope KyoAni will choke on it this time.

Welcome back KyoAni, I hope you learned from your mistake.

The action scenes look awesome. And hey, both the boys and girls look like they get to be awesome and not token representations of their gender.

It looks like the show will have a balance of usual Kyoani shticks, while maintaining an action and...I guess some-what serious vibe (I'll have to see the show myself on that one.) Still it looks interesting which is more than I can say of free spoiler[(Look guys I'm just not into sports series, I'm not saying it's bad I was just never interested in the show itself, just the fan base reaction)]*sub rant over* and I am glad that there appears to be a balanced gender cast.

Not THE show I'm looking forward to this fall, but I'll be sure to check it out!

Wow! The first PV was interesting in a cute kind of way, but the 2nd one... Oh My! The one with red glasses is not ugly, though I would bet she thinks she is... She is moe beyond belief. The blonde later on is almost Kouko Kaga beautiful, which, after this fall, should be the Golden (Time) standard for beauty in anime characters...

The fact that this s light novel based gives me hope for a good plot at least and the action and character designs are spot on, from what I see. Now that Kyoano is taking a step back into the "Action" area, it is the perfect time for them to start working on the next season of Full Metal Panic! No? Smile

With an overly pre-emptive reaction like that, now I am definitely going to catch this series.

Wow this show looks amazing!

this looks like a PA Works show not a kyoani show. I am actually excited about a new kyo ani show for the first time in a long time.

So you're just saying this to spite me?
The main girl looks plain bad, and if we compare their females to your average girls, we can clearly see they are less than appealing.

I think Kyoto Animation is going to strike gold again. I mean, that promo was epic and the theme is intriguing. Ah, October, come quicker~

What mistake?

If you ask me chubo, not making another full metal panic, the first few episodes of hyoka, and Tamako market being boring and not that funny.
I would say that I dropped free because I did not care for the charcters and the story was not engaging enough however it was great for the target audience so that was not a mistake.

FMP is a relic of the past, and not exactly related to the topic at hand.
You can't say it's a mistake they didn't do it when they made series that became massively popular, more popular than FMP.

But I don't think this action series will make much of a profit, no.
The theme and design don't fit for one.

"Blob girls?
I hope you're trolling, because that's [expletive] stupid.
And since when was the definition of nerdy "girl wearing glasses"?
If you were to pay attention, the "tall, mature perfect girl" isn't that "mature" and "perfect". Read the character description.
"2 bishies already feeling up each other". You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Mistake? How is Free! a mistake? It's doing really well when it comes to pre-order's and character song albums.

Um...yes, yes she is blob girl.
Her character design is almost chibi tier, and not because she's all that short or young at all.
Just look at those legs that lack shape and thickness; that's what I meant. It doesn't fit with an action series.

It's in the watch list for me this Fall, but Kyoani has kind of always been a turnoff for me so it's going to be a steep uphill climb to win my attention and keep it, especially cause of how deep fall looks for me interest wise on multiple levels. I've seen a moe/action mix work plenty times before (Raildex, Horizon, GuP to name a few off the top of my head), but I just have this feeling Kyoani is going to fail to get the balance right for all but those already pre-inclined to enjoy their shows and I'm going to end up losing interest fast whenever the glitzy visuals die down and the by the book moe moe high school antics start up.

Also have no interest in dealing with the fanboy wars that are sure to creep up over this show like they always do with Kyoani stuff (people are already trying to label this "Monogatari Killer" whatever the hell that even means outside of their own imagination) when I can probably just watch any other action show by any other producer this coming season and have a way less facepalm inducing and down to Earth but still fun discussions with people about it. Easily the biggest downside to any Kyoani series is trying to plod through the ridiculously fanboyish vs anti-fanboy online discussions and the drama that ensues and considering I barely enjoy most of their stuff on my own time content wise....yeah going to be really tough to stick with probably unless this is like an actual revolution for the Kyoani brand.

I'm inclined to agree with this design preference regarding moe/action shows. That's just the style of Kyoani designs though and expecting any different kind of seems like wishful thinking at this point. They tend to lack detail and proper proportions (even Free is grossly exaggerated) which I assume is somewhat necessary to maintain the levels of Sakuga they have in most of their shows. It's why I've kind of gravitated to Sunrise Studio 8 and J.C Staffs moe/action output of late as a guilty pleasure because they are like the anti-thesis of this design philosophy where the female characters look very appealing as they do their action thing.

I'd describe Kyoani female designs as caught somewhere between chibi and a blobbish look on average. That's really just kind of how they look to me and probably the origin of the moeblob term.

I'd caution against mixing personal preference with what Japan wants here. At this juncture Kyoani still has a MASSIVE in with the hardcore anime related goods buying audience in Japan. High sales are almost theirs to lose at this point and it's all but become an entitlement. That's just the kind of stratified state the industry appears to be in so if I'm a betting man I'd always bet on their shows to make a solid profit...in Japan at least.

Eh what do people expect at this point where the reactions to Kyoani stuff borders on parody and at this point. I see little difference from these sorts of reactions and the whole "ZOMG KYOANI GOING TO KILL MONOGATARI AND WILL FIND THE WAY!!!!111" ones you get from the studios hardcore supporters. I do wonder if there was ever a time where Kyoani projects actually had measured reactions or if it's just always been this sort of hyperbolic fervor. I can certainly never recall it since Haruhi only that post K-On there's been this huge anti-moe pushback and now with Free this hard misogynist bent that has added a whole never level of absurdity to the mess of trying to discuss Kyoto Animation project online.

For shows that are usually so fluffy and harmless the discussions sure tend to be kind of hateful/spiteful in general on most sides of the equation.
