As a lot of you know, ADV films has started released lots of series in Thinpak boxes. I think it's pretty great, because they take up much less shelf-space, and a tons cheaper, but there's one thing that annoys me a little. They don't include any special features at all. The original versions of the DVDs in a series have special features, so why can't they include them in the Thinpak versions? Does it affect the price to have special features? Oh well, it might not be that big of a deal, but what are your guys's opinions?

They claim it's so they "don't punish the people who buy individual DVDs", which I think is bullshit. Give them a physical extra or something. And people shouldn't have to hunt for individual DVDs of older series, or be 'punished' for bieng money concious ><.

It seems pretty reasonable to me to strip the special features. It's cost effective for both the consumer and ADV. And really, if these "special" features and "extras" are included with every single release, there's really nothing special about them and they're just standard features.

In terms of thinpak extras, I'll reply with the saying, "You get what you pay for." Per ADV's thinking (which I can agree with), disc extras are incentives to buy the single releases. If the extras came with the thinpaks as well, there would be no incentive to buy the singles. I was already annoyed when, for example, the thinpaks for Eva Platinum and Chrono Crusade came out not even six months after the last single was released. If these two thinpak titles had also retained all the special features, it would have made me angry, since it would have been a case of someone getting everything for half to of what I originally paid.
Not exactly true. Three of the earliest thinpaks to come out (RahXephon, Full Metal Panic!, and Noir) were released with their extras intact. Also, after a thinpak come out, it's been known for Right Stuf to put the singles into its bargain bin for cheap. Other online retailers do this as well, but its much more hit-and-miss for them. |

To be honest, the lack of extras never really bothered me. I almost never bother with extras on an anime DVD, and the only time I ever have was when it was either highly informative towards the show (those Welcome to the Universal Century vignettes that came with 08th MS Team explaining the Gundam universe, for example), a separate OVA that was bundled in (Chapter of the Stars: Birth with Banner of the Stars II or Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie with Azumanga Daioh...though they should have included Azumanga Web Daioh instead), or was a DVD-only animation vignette thrown in for fun (the Mai-HiME shorts and Shakugan no Shana-tan). And the only ADV release that included any real must-have extras in my opinion was Azumanga Daioh. I've never been completely impressed with ADV's extras, given that all the stuff I like tends to be more Bandai's and FUNimation's and RightStuf's specialties, so the thinpacks work just fine for me.

They wipe the extras but leave in the previews on each disc, which I find sort of funny. ADV's like "we took off the extras so we could compress the number of discs, but you will watch our previews!"

They leave the previews for obvious reasons, they might save a little by using fewer discs but the extra costs that might be caused by leaving the trailers on the discs is considered worthwhile from a marketing standpoint since it potentially introduces customers to other series they haven't picked up yet.
Now, if they screwed the people who buy single volumes by offering up super cheap thinpaks with all the benefits of the individual releases then no one would buy the individuals and the thinpak prices would skyrocket. Thinpaks are more or less budget releases, and as NGE said, you get what you pay for. The money also saved by removing a disc or two from a pak may seem insignificant but when you add how many are made and bought it actually can rise to a pretty hugh amount. That amount is especially important in thinpaks where ADV is likely making very little off each sale. |

I don't even watch the special features anyway, so I wouldn't mind all that much.
Even if I did watch them, it'd just be a one-time thing. |

I know for sure of at least one case where the lack of extras in a thinpak set made sense: the Azumanga Daioh Class Album thinpak set. It has the series on five disks while ADV originally released it in six volumes. At five episodes per disk (six on the last one) I would assume there wasn't any room left for the extras.
The series that would have be irked me if I had purchased the singles is Gantz. I own the two thinpak sets (season 1 & 2) and based on what I could gleam off of the ADV catalogue it would appear that they didn't remove the extras. What I found described on the thinpak disks I own seem to match what they describe in their catalogue entries for the corresponding singles. |

I rarely watch the extras on DVD's anyway, (be it anime or live action), as I find some of the extras (such as commentary) too annoying to bother with, so the removal of the extras in the thinpaks doesn't bother me at all. If it helps keep the prices of the boxsets down, then I'm all for it.
Curiously enough, the trailers are about the only extra I watch on anime DVD's these days.

Personally I am with you here, the only time I do watch extras are on titles that I love and of those I usually buy the ultra-extreme mega collection so I know I will be getting these. I think ADV does a good job by letting people who do buy singles have extra and yet make their catalog available to a wide range of people with thin-packs. |

If I had to choose between less expenses and extras, I would choose less expenses in a heart beat, what doesn't make me feel any remorse is that I rarely bother with the extras at all, except if it's an interview with the creator of one of my favorite series and that if I was in the mood to sit through alot of talking.
Besides, I like the thinpak edition, it's elegant and saves alot of shelf space and the best choice when you want to pack an anime when going on a trip. |

Just like others have mentioned, I like thinpaks because they're cheap and save space. I could care less if the "extras" are missing because stuff like clean opening and ending and picture gallery shouldn't even be considered extras. It also seems that certain thinpaks have much better art than the original volume 1+box. The Elfen Lied and new Samurai X thinpaks come to mind.

Not only that, they're also great for those of us who never bother to watch the extras. Only time I did that with ANY anime was with vols. 1-4 of Chrono Crusade--I watched Azmaria's Extra Classes once per disc and never watched them ever again. And if I find the ChC and FMP thinpacks, I'll just re-sell the single volumes I've already got (I've also got vol. 1 of s-CRY-ed on the chopping block now that I have the Anime Legends box set.). |

The only Extras I really must have are original VA interviews, and original Director Interviews. Which ADV doesn't do so much, so the thinpacks don't bother me. I think this was mentioned.
If there is one thing that does bother me, it is the fact that there are never any reversible jackets. Having to open my disc to just a white backdrop just bothers me for some reason. Not to mention I do like the option of chooseing my covers, even if they are usually tucked away out of sight. Alas though it is not that big of a deal. But I do think it is something simple that would increase the value of a thinpack. Geez, I sound like a real boob. But seriously, if they are going to make thinpacks clear, at least put some kind of color or something on the inside, so that it's not so white when you open it. Other than that I like them, although sometimes they could wait a little longer to release them. |
