At times I wonder if I'll still like anime when I get older, I think that I'll definitely be interested in anime up to my 20's or so but, it makes me think if I'll still like it beyond that age.
There's nothing wrong in liking anime even if your old already, like Hayao Miyazaki, I mean he's old and yet He's still into anime.
It's just that I don't know anyone,ANYONE at all that's about 40/50 that actually likes anime and watches it on a regular basis. Don't you think that it'd be kinda weird seeing a 50 year old lady going in to best buy buying an anime box set or w/e. It'd be kinda cool but still, some people would laugh. It would be kinda embarassing if that would've happen to any of us. Even now,I'm in high school and I still watch anime, my parents always tell me "anime's is cartoons.why do you watch it?and why are people so in to it nowadays?" they don't really care if I watch it or not, but still I hate it when people think that anime is for kids. How about hentai? HEntai's not for kids.hahaha
So my question is, Just how old is too old for anime? and Do you guys know anyone [maybe grandparents or any old person] who's watches anime at all [on their own] and likes it? Anime smile + sweatdrop [if anyone at all replies, Thanks in advance] Very Happy

I'll always say, your never to old for anything you like. If you like it, you like it. And as time goes on and the older people become older and the youngs ones now get to their 40/50s, it would be a common thing. Just think back of older times versus things that are now acceptable today.

I'll say that it depends upon the person, but I'll never get tired of the stuff. It's what keeps me tied to Japan, one of the only things that keeps me tied. But 30 isn't too old, I can tell you that. When there are people who are parents here on the forums, I can already tell you that 30 is not too old.

So are you saying you'd stop watching anime just because you would potentially look weird buying anime when you're older? You can say it's for your kids.

I'm in my thirties, my parent are in their sixties, they don't like everything but they used to sit down and watch Dragon Ball, (not so much Z), and Ranma with me. Heck, you want to talk about silly, my dad still sits and watches a couple of hours of old school cartoons on Boomerang almost every day. It's not anime but I think there's a good example of someone older who still enjoys things he did when he was much younger.

So I agree with the others and say I definitely do not think there is ever such a thing as too old for anime.

Here is a thread you should take a look through, it is not about your topic exactly, but there are quite a few posts in there from people in my age group or even older who enjoy watching anime.

True true, I guess it's like "just do what you want as long as your happy right?"
Yeah its true the old times that we'rent accepted then, are accepted now. Makes alot of sense. Very Happy

I'm not sure what exactly you're expecting from this thread, except perhaps to get some other high school kid's view of when older people should expect to be laughed at by some random Best Buy media department dropout. Sorry, but as an older anime fan myself can assure you that I don't really care what some little brat at Best Buy happens to think about one of my core hobbies. Besides, if you think it's difficult for people to understand why a grown man would want to watch anime, you haven't even scratched the surface. Just try explaining a hobby like planespotting to a TSA or BAA rent-a-cop. Once you've been through something like that you'll never think twice about getting a second glance while perusing the anime shelves at your local B&M.

Oh, and if this were another forum where discussing 'older' topics wasn't so goddamn taboo then I'd strongly suggest you consider reading this one...

Hard being an older anime fan.

But, as it is, the powers that be would apparently far prefer that we simply rehash every topic as it comes up and reinvent the wheel thousands of times in order to avoid committing the sin of discussing something from last quarter.

40 isn't to old since I did meet a guy who was 46 at McDonalds who was wearing a Naruto shirt and me and him got into a bit of a conversation about various anime stuff like the shows on adult swim and if I caught that episode of MAR on T.V. I personally think that you are never too old for any hobby, my uncle is 53 and still break dances...he is still pretty good to. Very Happy

yeah kinda, It's not that I would stop, it's just that it might be kinda awkward when you find teenagers gawking at you when you buy them [dvd's] and Hahaha yeah true, I can say their for my kids. I guess I'm just worried because right now, hell, i like anime alot,I'm 15 was just thinking if it'd still be ok for for me to like anime until when I'm older.
and wow! Thanks for this thread, makes me feel alot better, There was a guy in there that was 54 and he's STILL an anime fan. So i guess if I still like anime when I'm old [pretty sure i wil] i wouldn't be the only one out there. I was actually thinking to quit while I'm ahead because if I'm gonna have to give up liking anime later on anyway, then what's the point of liking it now. My mom recently told me "You won't have time for that when you become a mother"<<laughing. Man.. i got kinda worked up in thinking that I'd have to give it up sooner or later.
Thanks alot guys, I'm not so worried anymore. Very Happy

Ok you have to think what do older people watch in Japan, Im pretty damm sure

theres alot of older fokes that watch anime there, but i could be wrong. As for

older people here in the states, I would think there is very few older peps that

would watch anime concidering that people our age ( I. E. people under the

age of like 35 ) don't watch anime either. As far as how old is too old, I would

think thats personal prefrence. But me for instance I'm never going to stop

watching cause I LOVE anime, and I'm studying to be a linguist,

( Japanese is my language of study) so I'm going to watch anime till I die!

Also I'm 26 years old!!

I think it depends on how busy you are when you're older. From what I've seen being older = more responsibility=less time to sit in the dark in front of your computer watching anime. For me, sadly I know anime is just a phase. I'm not the type of person that has a life long hobby (because I get bored easily of the same thing over and over again-probably also the reason why I think I'll never get married). But, hey, if you're the type of person that has a real passion for it you'll like it regardless of your age. The only difference I can think between now and a future to come is that your tastes might be a little more refined and you won't like something like *insert popular shonen anime here* unless it's from your own generation and probably due to a nostalgia trip. And as for buying when you're older, I'm willing to bet half of a company's income will come from the internet and *bright side* because you're older and most likely have a credit card you won't have to ask your parents for theirs.

The thing you'll find most as you get older isn't that you'll start liking anime less but that your tastes will change. When I was in high school, I ate up Dragon Ball Z, but now that I'm the rip old age of 27 I find most of those tournament shows boring. Heck, I tried to watch part of the Naruto marathon today and when one fight took 4 episodes to complete I just shook my head and turned it off. There's anime made for all age brackets and tastes, and as you grow older you'll find things that scratch that itch. Cool stuff like Ghost in the Shell or Perfect Blue, for example. Very Happy

I have a relative who's turning 50 next year that has been following anime since the original Astroboy was on TV. She's more of a casual fan now, but is also a devotee to Studio Ghibli. Very Happy

(Her 55-year old boyfriend is also a fan of Ghost in the Shell.) Wink
