When I started watching anime my friends made fun of me, I wondered why. I don't even talk about anime so much and the still criticize it. They keep saying that it is wierd and that it has no plot and it is very boring. When I read a manga, without even knowing what it is about or even what it is, they start to think of a lot of things to critcize by looking at the front cover. They don't even give it a chance. Is it because of the mechs (Gundum and Neon Genesis Evangelion), the character transformations (S-Cry-Ed and Sailor Moon), or the odd plots (Excel Saga and Fooly Cooly). Sometimes it leads to racism about the Japanese for no reason at all.
If anybody knows a reason as to why people criticize anime please post your answer.

Because people are stupid. Simple answer. It's true. Think I'm only saying this because I'm too lazy instead of typing out paragraph after paragraph in order to sound righteous?

I think it's due to ignorance and not really stupidity. Many people seem to have this false notion that all anime is Pokemon, graphic violence, porn, and possibly mainstream anime such as Naruto. People who have bothered to watch a few titles (and not just random episodes or chunks of random episodes) would probably not say these things. They still might not like anime, and might openly voice that they do not like it, but if they were to be exposed to a few of the more acclaimed titles (on ANN's Top 10 or Top 50 list) or something suited to their tastes, I doubt they'd criticize anime in this manner any longer.

That's actually true.People can't accept what others like and then find ways to criticize it. Recently some of my "friends" laughed at me for watching anime and stated its stupid ever since is foreign and said "only losers watch it because they don't have a life" and incorrectly stated that anime is from China(idiots). Just tell your friends that they're missing out on some great shows and make them watch some of your favorite anime or some really popular ones like Cowboy Bebop,FMA etc. to let them get into anime.

Thats very true. People in general enjoy making fun of and/or attacking anything they dont understand.
Because in general, humanity is very, very, stupid.
But in the case of anime, here are some possible reasons why they might be stupid in this particular way.
First of all, friends like to joke around and tease each other. Its just part of normal interaction. So they probably are just poking harmless fun at you about the only thing they can think of.
Secondly, animation has a very different purpose in North American culture. Our culture views animation as kids stuff, so the general popularion around here is going to assume that anime is just more cartoons for kids. My friends would make fun of me too if they thought I was totaly engrossed in "The Magic Schoolbus" or "Dragontales" or something. Sure, we all know that in Japanese culture animation is aimed at any number of age groups, from kids stuff like "Pokemon" all the way to pornos, but that dosnt mean that your average Joe on the street is going to be aware of cultural differances that he's never explored.

No it's stupidity. Even if they know about it, they choose to deny it and claim it as kids cartoon. Not choosing to venture out and check titles out and CHOOSING to stay ignorant is what people do. That is being incredibly stupid not ignorant.
Do you know WHY some people make fun of Anime and stay ignorant? it's common sense at it's best: people choose to stay ignorant once they make fun of the first Anime they see because they want their original statement to remain true to them. Once they realize that good Anime DO exist, they would feel like an idiot for ever saying what they did. it's called ego that people have.

I have tried to get them into anime by showing them Noir, Serial Experiments Lain, S-Cry-Ed, and Espicially Hellsing OVA. They still keep saying that I waste my time and that I have no life. I have gotten only one of my friends to stop saying that and that was by using Hellsing. Other than that my friends remain ignorant saying that anime is something people with no lives watch. (it is a bit offensive if you think about it)

while people can be very stupid and ignorant, with anime and other things as well, many might just not have anime in their realm of taste, and this could be for several reasons. i way you can see someones true view of anime is listen to how they criticize it. if they have intelligent reasons as to why they dont like it, such as one doesn't like shonen because it is too childish or repetitive, means that the person has probably at least watched several episodes of a shonen series, and possibly many series. but, if a person says that ALL anime is like that, then that person probably has a very limited access to the vast quantities of anime genres there are.
also, on a side note, what some may call "fanservice" others will call "porn"

And you have any kind of basis to claim that "they" actually do know about anime?
There's a huge difference between ignorance and stupidity. People who assume and say things about anime, good or bad, without actually having watched any is a form of ignorance, not stupidity. Anime isn't some kind of Holy Bible; nobody has to go out of their way to watch it before saying things about it, which I'm sure all of you have also done for other subjects. To claim that people are stupid because they remain ignorant (of anime, of all things) is ridiculous. Your stance is that of an anime elitist; it's very disreputable and hypocritical for the anime community to support such a view.
This is the most common case of ignorance. This is exactly how stereotypes are created. Replace "anime" with "jock" or "geek" or "insert-race" and you get the same word: ignorance. Anime is not one of the exceptions where a person would be considered "stupid" for not knowing about it.

I know there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. What I'm saying is that people are stupid for WANTING to stay ignorant of what can change or contradict their initial view points. I'm not saying because they are ignorant they are stupid.
Also, please stop making random assumptions that I am being an Anime elitist. You are being ignorant yourself when you say that.

It wasn't a random assumption; everything you've said in your previous post pointed towards those two words. If anything I'd call it a deduction. Nevertheless, the point would be that I, for example, would never type anything that'd make anyone assume that I was an anime elitist.
And exactly how are people "wanting" to stay ignorant? That's what you claim, yet it's ridiculous as it's common sense that most people who criticize anime base their opinions on their preconceived notions (ie. the first and only anime they ever watched is an episode of Pokemon), which is ignorance on their part. To say that they "want" to remain ignorant assumes that they actually know something about anime, and they "want" to remain ignorant of something that they already know.
To put it in a story, Mr. Ignorant watches one episode of Pokemon, and assumes that all anime is like Pokemon because he's ignorant. He remains ignorant because he doesn't "want" to watch anime. He doesn't know he's ignorant, because he's never watched anything else that makes him realize that he's ignorant. When has he ever "wanted" to remain ignorant?

Like I said in my "Are anime fans freaks" thread I have no problem that many people do not like it, it's the people that refuse to aknowledge it's existence because they are afraid that they might like it or some other reason; those people I feel sorry for. Everyone has their own preferences on passtimes, which is good, some like baseball, some like pets, computers, coins, anime, etc. Many people like several hobbies. If someone wants to choose to avoid anime that's their own fault, and maybe their one taste of it was enough that they don't want to try again. Because of that people will rarely have a rational reason why they don't like something when they learn that a friend likes it. Usually the response is something like it's stupid or it's for losers (which is completely lackluster judgement), since it's easier for their other friends to agree with them, rather than coming up with some elaborate explanation: Then they'd really feel out of place.
