This is fantastic news. I hope the numbers continue to rise so that someday we may get a third season of the anime.
I'd also rejoice at the Chihayafuru manga making it stateside. So much.

Me too. I'm seriously considering buying the french editions since it's looking less and less likely it'll ever see the light of day over here...

We won't see it stateside because Kodansha USA has pretty much refused it.
I don't know maybe when it finishes they will relent or maybe someone else will pick it up but I've given up all hope.
Shame such a wonderful manga probably won't see it stateside.

Seriously! A S3 is almost inevitable. This was one of the few anime shows that I gave a 10/10 rating. I can't wait until they actually announce a S3. Sales are ++++

Kodansha USA doesn't have an exclusive on Kodansha titles, so other companies are free to pick it up.
They probably won't, though, since it's a 20+ volume josei sports series about a game involving medieval Japanese poetry, which is about as unmarketable as a manga can get.

Oh I understand their reasoning. I don't think it will ever be a best seller but with a built in fandom from the anime I don't think it would sell that badly as expected either.
But what are you going to do? It is what it is. If only more of the bilingual issues were released in Japan.

Did the manga sell even higher than before with another boost, or just cruise from the initial blast for season one?

Dammit, now I'm wishing that I hadn't packed my copy of the first volume, you guys are making it sound like it's a must-read/must-see. This is what I get for not reading my manga as soon as I buy it.

Anime probably stands a better chance in North America than the manga. Four NISA-style box sets would probably be enough. Problem is it's probably too niche for companies like FUNi and Sentai, but too expensive for niche companies like NISA, Maiden Japan, or Discotek to gamble on.

It had a slight increase to maintain around 400k sold in the first half of the year compared to 350k sold in the first half of last year for new volumes.
