With the drop in price of anime dvd's and video's, manga seems to be less popular now. To some it seems old fashioned and out of place. Many also don't like reading when they can watch it on t.v. The price of manga has also jumped recently as well, it doesn't look good for the future of manga. { at least in english speaking countries }

Manga prices haven't gone up, at least not recently that I know of. :/ Personally, I don't care. As long as I can still buy it.

I don't think Manga is old fashioned. But you're right these days a hell of a lot of people can't give a @#$# about reading and are too lazy to turn a page.

XD I really don't think people will stop reading manga because it's "cheaper" to watch the anime. For one, you can take manga where you can't take anime. Second, most anime is originaly dervived from manga. Fans also usually find the manga to be much better thent he anime, and usually turn to the manga when the anime is over.

Well, I agree alot of people only watch anime but they really miss alot on manga, both anime and manga have their points.
Manga has really nice artwork, well most of the time, and it's almost like buying a little black and white artbook. The stories are alot faster, or, alot more detailed then its anime counterparts. People say manga is expensive but alot of work goes into it. If it sells better which I hope it does in the future prices will fall.
Anime is very expensive, 30 dollars a pop. It is usually very condensed when its too short of a series or very slow when it is made too early and there isn't enough manga for episodes. On a positive note it doesn't take too much effort and you can just sit and watch, unless your a purist.
If you ask me both a great forms of entertainment and when you read the manga and watch the anime of the series you get insight on it. If you want to do this I recommend you see the anime first because most people never think the anime is never up too par with the manga.
To be honest I think it's a crime to pass up manga because of the price. But, then again if Tokyopop is charging us 10 dollars for a paperback you think they can add 4 color pages, rather then make a black and white copy of them. I'm glad to hear there slowly encorporating the color pages now.

I agree Tokyopop needs to start adding the colored pages in the places where they orginaly were. Back when Tokyopop was still trying to break into the market I was able to forgive them fro cutting some corners so they could build a solid foundation; but now they are on firm footing and I'm not being so forgiving. Plus, the colored pages do add to the manga. The first manga that I own that has had them is Wish and they are indeed eye candy. Also, I would be nicer if they produce more special edition boxes like they did for Chobits (Still waiting to get it).

Well i think that they need to start adding colour to manga's. I would even pay more for it. Then it really reverts back to one of the questions i started this topic: Are people going to buy it if it costs more?

Um...what? Dude, manga have been dropping in price. A couple years ago a standard Viz graphic novel ran for about $15-$18, and now ADV and TokyoPop are putting out graphic novels at $9.99. And as for manga "decreasing" in popularity, that's not really a fair assessment if you're looking at the Western market, because manga is just now really hitting it big outside of Japan. For the longest time it was basically all Viz & Dark Horse, who trickled out manga titles at a sickeningly slow pace. Only in the past couple of years have companies like TokyoPop & ADV come along and jumpstarted the Western manga industry, prompting Viz and all of the other "old school" manga distros to start cleaning up their acts, as well.
Manga having a bleak future? Yeah...I'm with littlegreenwolf on that...completely absurd.

I don't give a damn about how many people read and buy manga, as long as they print it. Well, actually, there are thousands of more manga volumes in French than in ENglish, so even if manga production in the US drops, I won't stop.
This is not a popularity contest. I'm not going to ponder about popularity.

Heck, tv studios in America and Japan are always stealing stories from books. people haven't a clue that a good chunk of Hollywood's movies aren't even original. So what if it's the same way in Japan with the manga and anime connection.
I think if your idea of manga going out of style is mearly a perception problems. Anime is growing more popular at a rate much faster than the popularity of manga. They're both growing and selling more, but at different rates. That's all.

Among comic circles, manga is either two things 1) Hated with extreme prejudice 2) or getting more popular. So among comic geeks (I'm one, and mean no offense) it is becoming more popular, if only in a fraction of readers.

Its simple economics people. Higher demand will pull greater supply. Greater supply equals drop in price.
From an advertising standpoint if a company sells for 9.99 others will follow the lead to stay competitive.
I passed macro but didn't quite make micro..... I wonder why that is.

Well, Tokyopop is definitely evolving. Tokyo Babylon will have colored pages and I'm pretty sure alot more color pages will be added. I also believe Tokyopop saw what the Chobits Boxset did and will see that extras=more $.
Japanese manga has alot of little extras that hopefully Tokyopop can see makes them money. and maybe next time they'll commision it and not make a book chain to do it.
And I was pretty upset at chobits but not only because of the color pages but the postcards! I wanted the postcard that came in Vol 8!
