..........VS..........

Ok here it is...
Normally I prefer buying individual DVD releases for anime I watched through fansubs and liked a lot. One of the reasons is I'm especially fond of artboxes.

I found both the 4 DVD volumes for Saikano and the boxset version at very good prizes (40%+ off)...I'd go for the individual DVDs but...there is no artbox...Sad

So some feedback is needed...mainly from people that have the boxset...or both...

A> The boxset version has only 2 DVDs. The high episode count per DVD (plus any extras crammed inside) is affecting overall quality?
(I think only someone who has both versions can verify this)

B> Are the extras the same as in the individual DVDs?

C> the total cost for bringing each version to Greece (including shipping) is :
Arrow 75$ for the 4 Volumes (and you get an extras disc with Vol1)...
Arrow 50$ for the 2 disc boxset...
Are the individual DVDs worth the added cost for this series?

Any help / suggestion / piece of advice will be met with love and appreciation. And please excuse my bad english... Laughing

Salutations from (not too sunny right now) Greece, George F. Cool

I don't know if this will help, but the version of Saikano Vol. 1 (the only one I have so far) is a 2-discer by itself, with a full extra disc that has interviews with the animation staff and the two lead voice actors and stuff. It was really neat to watch that stuff, but I don't know if it'd be worth the price difference to you.

Here's what's on the extra disc according to RightStuf (my disc had a different cover....not sure why): DVD Features: Conversation with Voice actors (Shuji & Chise), Creditless Opening theme & Ending theme, TV special "All About SAIKANO," Talk Show "Family Explores" with Voice Actors (Chise,Shuji & Tetsu), Short TV Program "SAIKANO Times," TV commercials, Line art, and Color character sheet.

Looks like Vol. 2 has one additional interview, and then discs 3 and 4 have no extras. The interviews are cool, but are they $25 cool? Hard to say.

Also, I can't tell...does the series box include the 1-volume OAV as well, or just the 13-ep TV series?

Thanks for the feedback jgreen... Very Happy

As far as I know, the boxset contains only the TV episodes + some extras...according to TRSI : DVD Features: Line-art Gallery, Interviews with the creator, director, and voice actors, Making of Featurette, Special Footage, Production Art.

From the sound of it, it looks like most of the extras contained in the individual releases made their way to the boxset too...and (according to ANN) in the second disc only.

And that brings us to question A: Did they manage to move the equivalent of 4(+1) DVDs in content to only 2 without compromising the overall quality?...I still need an answer to this... Idea
Can someone that already owns the boxset give me some info? Anime smile + sweatdrop

Also, as hard as I searched, I couldn't find any 3d pictures (only the front) for the actual artbox in the boxset. Does anyone have one handy?... Mr. Green

I have the four individual volumes, minus the artbox, so I can't answer your questions about the extras that are on the boxset version. In hindsight, if I had been presented with your choice then I would've gone with the boxset. The second disc that came with volume 1 got minimal play time. I don't think I actually watched more than five minutes of it. I don't know if it was case of being too anxious to work my way through viewing the series or being so shellshocked with the ending that resulted in the extra disk ending up becoming the moral equivalent of a coaster. Probably the latter. Hence my failure to revisit it.

Thanks for the feedback d.yaro. Very Happy

Since I really liked the show I think I'd watch the extras anyway. My only concern now is the actual quality presented in the boxset. The episode count per DVD is high and what I want to determine is whether it affects video quality.

I would love some feedback from anyone owning the actual boxset... Rolling Eyes

Wow, it's a shame you didn't ask about this last year. I had a little discussion with dormcat about the difference in video quality between the R1 and R3 box sets. Unfortunately, I deleted all the screencaps already. But if I put in the extra effort, I can just use the timestamps I posted as a reference to try and recapture them again.

That R3 release was mighty impressive!...Shocked

Don't bother friend, actually I only need your advice on the subject since you have the boxset...Did you find video quality bad?

Also, is there a way for me to take a look at the actual artbox? (I cant find a 3d view around the net, only the front cover). If you could up pic of your box I'd be grateful...Very Happy

The video quality didn't bug me all that much. Although in comparison to the R3 caps from that thread, the R1's picture is a lot blurrier. I've not seen the quality of the individual discs, so I'll just post a few from the R1 box set sometime later to see if it meets your approval.

And here are some pics of the box:
