Bah, they keep saying while supplies last, but they probably got tons of those still lying around. I saw a few people who had them for Ishiguro to autograph at AX.

Wow, I was considering getting this from ADV, but it might be worth it to get AnimEigo's better remastering at such a cheap price, with the only sacrifice being the English dub.

What "better" remastering? It's the same print, since ADV and Animeigo both got their versions from Harmony Gold.

I meant better sound since the Animeigo set used remastered Japanese audio track from Big West while ADV used the old fuzzy audio track from Harmony Gold. |

I've got a question about the dub, is it really good or am I better off with Sub version from Animeigo. I ask this because I am a dub guy but I do watch sub when the dub just isn't up to par. |

I haven't actually seen the series yet so I can't comment on the dub, but you can check here: animenewsnetwork.com/reviews/display.php?id=1022 I decided to go ahead and buy this boxset, so I can get the better Japanese audio quality, but I will also buy the ADV boxset with dub whenever that comes out so I can have the best of both worlds I am a dub fan myself. |

Something about the dub really got on my nerves. I'm not sure what. I am usually very lazy about such things, but... this dub got on my nerves. I wish I could be more helpful in describing it. Let me think. It was like, the acting was on a different, perhaps higher, level than the animation that everything felt overdone. Does that make any sense? Like, I was so used to the Robotech, 80s-version mediocre "dub" that having people acting felt like too much.
Maybe I'm crazy. I can't find v. 7 of the ADV version anyway. It'd be awesome, though, to have all five or six versions of Robotech, plus the Animeigo box, plus all the ADV stuff... heh. Now, if only we could get M0 and M7.... |

Cross posted from the Anime Planet thread.
It is the same remastering. Animeigo has a different Japanese audio track though. Animeigo uses Big West's master. ADV uses Harmony Gold's. BW's was much crisper. Animeigo also mirrored the audio. The HG one's sound like crap. They're considerably noisier. One fan went so far as to call them "unwatchable". Personally, I kind of like ADVs cover art for the discs. Animeigo's are simple line art. They're nice, but they leave room for improvement. Though I much prefer Animeigo's focus on character, as Macross is more about them to me than it is the transforming mecha. ADV went the mecha route...again...like with Robotech. They even reuse some Robotech pieces, I think. So in that department, Animeigo wins. They also get bonus points for keeping the official title art as well. The box is more a matter of taste. Both are nice, and I really like the Kamjin pic on the ADV. Though the HG box probably wins (Animeigo actually released it in a very simple and drab black box. ADV's is much nicer than that.) Especially for the Hikaru and Misa side. Though all three pale in comparison to the Macross World metal ones. The Animeigo box listed above is actually HG's for the leftovers. There's an error in your post, Area 88. The sets do not share extras. The subs have also been tweaked. All extras on the Animeigo set were precurred by Animeigo, hence HG doesn't own them, hence ADV doesn't get them. The restoration reel is probably the only one between them. ADV also took the liner notes. ADV doesn't have the Imagawa commentary to my knowledge. ADV most likely also doesn't have the dialogue-free audio track. ADV does have a bunch of new material Animeigo doesn't though. Though outside of the Mari Iijima footage, there's not much of interest to major fans to warrent a repurchase unless they're big on dub, as it's mostly dub actor commentary. All in all, unless you hate subs, or am a big fan of dub extras, there's little reason not to get the Animeigo set over the ADV. Especially at that price. Animeigo for sub fans, ADV for dub fans. Plain as that. Yes GATSU, I got my box set signed at AX as well. HG was selling it downstairs, so I had to pick it up. As for the dub, it's largely up to you. It's been generally recieved by fellow fans as about average. Personally, I'm not too fond of it. I especially don't care for Monica Rial as Misa. I'm alo told that ADV messed with the sound effects. Rather inconsistently as well. They replace the gunpod sound nine times out of ten or so. Stuff like that tends to knock a dub down several notches, but that's me. |
