I just finished watching this series and I didn't find it anything out of the ordnary. I found it was just another harem story except this one didn't make a lot of sense to me, the story was hard to follow and I found it was pretty weak for y tastes.
But I just saw they are doing a remake of exactly the same story. I find it strange that they are doing a remake of a relatively new anime. Does anybody know if the new one is exactly the same story or if the differences between the old one and the remake are meaningful at all? Thanks, Luminal |

I'll go over all the significant differences. 1) Animation. This one isn't very hard to notice, one peek at the trailer for Kanon 2006 and you will notice the fluid and beautiful animation of KyoAni. Not only is it really pretty and 3D, but it greatly strengthens the snow setting and atmosphere. Wonderful animation easily makes a series more engaging and makes impactful moments stronger, as well as provide a greater sense of realism toward the series. 2) Music. The OP of the new series is from the original game, and it stands out much more from Fluorescence as it actually fits the series better. Music follows suit and is from the original game soundtrack, and is definitely more fitting than the soundtrack in the original series (which sounded gloomy and/or incredibly synthetic and MIDI-like). Wonderful music, like wonderful animation, can do a lot of great things for the series. 3) Pacing. The new series is 24 episodes while the old one was 12, and this makes a very significant difference. Many more things happen because there's a lot more episodes to fit them in. Nothing needs to be rushed any longer, and many of the later tragic occurences can be explained much more properly. The last few episodes felt incredibly rushed in Kanon 2002 because there were not enough episodes left to fit them in, and they had to squeeze a ton of events into a tiny episode frame, which didn't work out and ended up rushed and confusing. So far, 2006 has not run into this problem, and I doubt it will throughout its entire broadcast. 4) Plot integration. In Kanon 2002 they chose to focus on each girl's arc seperately, finishing them off one-by-one, which made the whole series feel chopped and incohesive. Kanon 2006 takes a new approach and interweaves each girl's arc into one large arc, which makes the plot much more fluid, more enjoyable, and less cliche + like a harem. 5) Characterization. The characters in the series are energetic and full of life, much more so than 2002, and are more interesting to watch. This is partly due to a better script (both comedy and tragedy are done better) and superior seiyuu work (almost the same cast, but they all take a new and mostly better approach). Lesser characters that were tossed aside and forgotten in 2002 are much more significant in 2006, and have vibrant and unique personalities of their own. Since characterization is very important for a character-driven series such as Kanon, better characterization boosts the quality of the series significantly.
I think of it more as two series based on the same source material rather than 2006 being a remake. KyoAni was going to pursue this project regardless of whether 2002 existed or not, most likely because of the success of Air (Kanon is the famous predecessor after all). The evidence lies in the fact that besides being based on the same visual novel game, the two almost have nothing in common, and the numerous and significant differences between the two seem to suggest that the producers of 2006 barely even took a look at 2002. |

Frentymon has the main differences nailed down pretty well--as to why they'd remake such a recent series, consider the target audience for series like Kanon--Japanese otaku who get heavily attached to moemoe characters and will buy tremendous amounts of DVDs, CDs, character merchandise, and anything else they put out. Making another version of a show based on a game that was already very popular puts KyoAni on the path of Win.
But I must ask, is Kanon really "just another harem show" on the lines of the harem staples? (Those "staples" being series like Tenchi Muyo!, Love Hina, and Oh/Ah My Goddess.) I don't believe so--sure, it's got numerous girls who have some sort of friendship or attraction with one boy, but you don't find the kinds of hijinks and fanservice that you get from standard harems, which fall into the romantic comedy genre. Kanon, otoh, is more of a drama/fantasy, and it even differs from prior dating-game-based series like To Heart. This is because Kanon has a strong emphasis on influencing the player/viewer's emotions, often with the specific intent of making him/her (okay, gender-neutral language not necessary here, it should be "him") cry. They didn't call Kanon a "nakige" (crying game) for nothing, and while it may not have had that effect on you, luminal, it has on many people who've played the game and/or seen the anime. This doesn't mean that you're a cold-hearted robot, just that the story/presentation didn't resonate with your tastes. |

Wait, seriously? I always thought you were male... [EDIT] Or is that a crossdresser in your avatar...? Anyway, back on topic, Kanon is geared more toward the seinen audience rather than shounen, so you can expect more emphasis on plot than happy-fun-time romance and moe, seeing as this is adapted from a moe-oriented game. Calling it "harem" wouldn't exactly be incorrect, but it's kind of misleading as pertaining to this series. |

[/sarcasm] I haven't seen the original, so I don't know how effective it is, but I'm really liking the KyoAni version so far. It is home to my all time most unexpected moment spoiler[Makoto dropping the baby cat off the bridge onto the highway after the conversation something like: K: "What are we going to do about the cat? I'd like to take it home...but Nayuki's..." M: "Why do we have to worry about it? I got my meat bun, we don't need to worry about it anymore. K: "You're pretty cold... It sure seems to like you. You don't find it cute?" M: "Animals are thrown out once they're no longer wanted, right? Don't you agree?" K: "Well... I'm sure that some people would agree..." M: "Instead of thoughtlessly allowing it to grow accustomed to an easy life with humans we should return it to the wild." K: "Return it to the wild...?" M: *drops the kitten off the highway overpass right into traffic* No number of  faces could describe what went through my mind at that moment.]
The KyoAni version also looks to be starting to get into the first sad part, and while I haven't cried yet, I feel like part of me dies inside watching spoiler[Makoto live out the rest of her life, since we know what will happen to her. There's something horrible about losing your humanity. Perhaps it's that I know what it is like to see this happen to someone, since my grandmother had alzheimers. By the end of her life, she couldn't even remember who her children were and had long since been unable to even feed herself.] |

Thanks for the answers guys! I am now itching to get my hands on the new Kanon. I thought the show had potential and started with the best of intentions but somewhere along the way they screwed up.
