I am wondering what to call faces that often occur in anime. Included but not limited to the stunned face that is basicly circle eyes and a open jaw, and the mocking face where they pull the one eye down and stick thier tounge out.

[EDIT: Changed the topic to be more specific. -TK]

I believe this would be a question better suited for the Anime forum, and not the Encyclopedia, so I'm moving it.

I'm guessing you meant something like:

This:

or

this:

That gesture (bottom eyelid pulled down, tongue out) is often referred to as "Akkanbeh" (pronounced more like "Ak-kan-baaay"). I've read a description of the "mechanics" of the gesture as being 1) pull down eyelid whilst saying "akkan" and 2) sticking out tongue whilst saying "baaaay" but where I've come across this gesture in anime it's usually only the "baaay" part that gets said. I suppose its closest relation in the English speaking world would be the old "Nya-na-nana-na-na" taunt.

First one would be a blissfully happy face, while the second one would be a taunting face? I think the various faces used in anime give a very clear emotion so I think you should call it whatever emotion you feel is being portrayed. It's not like another person will ever get the perfect picture of what you're describing unless you draw it, so passing the general idea is the point, right?

I thought the point of the question was more along the lines of, "Do these sorts of drawn faces representing emotions have a name as a whole?" Sort of like how cutesy small characters are referred to as Chibi style.

At least that is what I've always wondered.

Huh....I've never heard that one before. The only instances I can think of where anything is said (other than "NNYYAAAAH!") when this face is made, the character usually says "Peeeeeeeee-da!" I still remember the first time I heard a character say this (Skuld in the original OMG! OAV series) thinking to myself "Yeah, but you can't physically say that with your tongue stuck out. Shocked "

sigh... Lots of more or less home-made answers in this thread. Here's the straight dope:

The first facial expression has no particular name (although me ga mawaru, "eyes are spinning", is sometimes used to describe it). It represents dizziness, to the extent of semi-consciousness. This dizziness may occur from any number of causes, including but not limited to heatstroke (as for instance in a Japanese bath); being spun around; or physical or emotional shock.

The second one is an akanbe, and it is available for lookup in the Lexicon. It has also been copiously discussed, along with other Japanese facial expressions and body language, in these threads:
Please read those threads. If you still have any questions, please feel free to ask. I shall happily elaborate.
