I know it’s an old title, but hopefully someone can help me out. I just finished watching Shamanic Princess for the second time, and I still can’t figure out what the heck is going on. I think I have things more or less pieced together, but I’d really like to hear what some other people thought. I have searched the forums to see if any older topics ever covered the plot of this OAV, but I could not find anything. I did a Google search as well, and found that I’m not the only one that finds this story confusing. I’m not sure if it’s a story where you are not supposed to understand everything, or if maybe I’m just dense.
Mostly, I’m wondering what is the Throne of Yord? If I understand it correctly, it’s spoiler[some mystical, self aware, talisman (in the form of a painting) that is the source of magic power for the Guardian World. For some reason which I don’t fully understand, it has to be tended by neutralizers who supposedly constrain its power, but in fact it had been asleep for a long time. When it woke up, it apparently demanded some kind of sacrifice (for what reason I don’t know – amusement, loneliness, whatever) and the elders of the Guardian World offered Sarah. Kagetsu, thinking Sarah has been trapped in the painting steals it and flees the Guardian World, planning to use his neutralizer powers to somehow get her out. In the end, however (and this is the part I’m really unsure about) it turns out Sarah has been completely absorbed or maybe merged with the consciousness of the Throne and can’t be removed.] Another plot point that I’m not completely sure about is the story of Graham. When he is first summoned spoiler[why is his body deformed? Is it because Tiara is so young and didn’t quite get the summoning process down correctly? Later, when Lena, who is supposed to be less powerful summons her partner he looks like a normal person, but she is much older at that point. I was also a little confused about Graham’s death. Did he attack Kagetsu because he was planning to leave the Guardian World and Graham knew that would hurt Tiara, or was Graham jealous of Kagetsu, leading him to attack him and subsequently be neutralized out of existence?] I though maybe the anime had been adapted from a longer manga and that was the reason for the anime’s vague plot. I know other titles that were adapted from manga sometimes suffer in the storyline department as a result, but I can’t find that there is any manga associated with Shamanic Princess so I have to assume the plot was intended to be this obscure. Despite the nagging questions, I still like this OAV. It has an interesting mood about it. The character designs, the dark settings, and the music all combine very nicely. I like the feeling permeating the first few episodes that there is a lot of history between the different characters and that there is much more going on than meets the eye, but I also expected to be let in on that history at some point and not have to be guessing about so much of what happened. I’d sure like to hear the impressions of anyone else that has seen this OAV. Last edited by ManOfRust on Tue Nov 21, 2006 11:03 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I quite liked this OVA although it was a bit vague in parts.
My impression of the Throne of Yord is that spoiler[ it is the source of power for the Guardian World and provides them with all the magic and stuff they need. I think the neutralizers are the ones who keep the Throne dormant to prevent it breaking free and thus leaving the Guardian World without its source of power but for some reason it woke up and they had to give it Sarah.] As far as Graham is concerned I thought that spoiler[ the form of the partner is shaped by the summoner and that Tiara just wasn't very focused causing Graham to be a slightly deformed. I think he attacked Kagetsu because he loved Tiara in some manner and he didn't want him to hurt her, also maybe he thought if he stopped the theft then Tiara would respect him as more than her partner.] Thats what I thought after watching it anyway, I could be completely wrong. |

Umm, I was asked by the OP to post in this thread, so please don't yell at me for reviving an old thread..,
I actually found the plot to be very confusing, not helped by the fact that certain elements were not explained (hence my Plot, What Plot? comment in my other post). Hmm, I thought the Throne of Yordspoiler[ was actually a sentient being, albeit a very powerful one, powerful enough to supply all the magic to the Guardian World. But it wasn't a very benign entity, & it demanded sacrifices every once in a while (I didn't think Sarah was the first one to be sucked into the Throne of Yord). As for being totally absorbed by the Throne, I believed that Sarah chose to stay within the Throne at the end, in order to keep the entity happy, & to safeguard the magic of the Guardian World.] As for Graham, spoiler[your thinking is the same as mine, in that he was deformed because Tiara was very young & therefore wasn't focused properly when she summoned him. My feeling are also the same as yours when it's comes down to reasons why Graham attacked Kagetsu; Graham knew that Tiara was in love with him, so Kagetsu leaving would only hurt Tiara more.] |
