I Love Parody Anime!
Project ako and otaku no video are some of my old school faves. I like them because of the old school references. Plus if i dont get something i could go find out the hype. Im a fan of some old school comedies and anime so it clicks with me. and humor is truly ageless. but Can puni puni be considered parody? she does kick all the magical girls butt at the beginning. Also any more parody anime in the works at the moment? Also what are your favorites recent and old? |

Puni Puni Poemy is absolutely parody anime; that was the whole point of it. Same with its predecessor Excel Saga and the unrelated series Miami Guns (which is set in an alternate-world version of Miami that has no relationship whatsoever to the real-world Miami).

I also love parody anime. I'll mention two of my favorites (also, I can't tell if this is a recommendation thread or not. Is it?).
Nurse Witch Komugi - It's an OVA that is actually a spinoff of The SoulTaker and is also one big parody on the magical girl genre. In addition, it was made by Tatsunoko, so expect to see a lot of old-school anime also parodied in this (which includes but is not limited to: Gatchaman, Speed Racer, Casshan: Robot Hunter, Ogon Senshi Gold Raitan, etc.) The list of anime it parodies is rather large, and while some of them are completely obvious to me (Di Gi Charat, DBZ, Gundam, and even Excel Saga (a parody of a parody series) were obvious to me when they appeared), there's probably some I didn't know of either... Also, a lot of parody on the otaku culture. Lots of parody on moe, internet cultures, and even the animation process itself... Imo, probably one of the best and most overlooked parody anime (or just anime) around. It's often overlooked because of the "cutesy" look to it. And ya, it was kind of meant to attract to the moe loving otaku too. The fact that it directly makes fun of it though is rather ironic... Galaxy Angel - As a parody series, I don't think it matches up to Komugi (my favorite parody series) but it still has enough other aspects to make it one of my favorites... It really doesn't get that much into parody until the third season though, where it really starts dishing out some, imo, great and hilarious parodies. Most of the parodies are of certain anime genres. Off the top of my head, I can think of episodes that revolved around parodies of super sentai, bishoujo games, sports anime, mystery/thriller series, magical girl series, mecha... uh, there's a lot more it parodies too. Actually, the characters themselves are kind of exaggerated parodies of their video game counterparts (who act the same but not to the same degree as they do in the anime). But that's not all the series does, so it's not strictly parody. The first two seasons are mainly just wacky situations that the Angels get into... Anyway, I recommend it. It's really just plain fun, but doesn't ruin it by throwing in an actual storyline to a strictly comedy series. I really think that ruins series sometimes (*cough*dokurochan*cough*). |

I've heard that Pani Poni Dash was a parody anime, I'm not so sure of that though. I'd like to see it when it comes out on DVD in late November, it's getting a lot of rave reviews.
Nanaka 6/17 is sort of parody. Well, the Magical Domiko parts parody magical girl shows. |

Yes, it is also definately parody anime. Reminds me of an Azumanga Daioh on crack... And I'd also recommend it. Very funny. I never did get around to finishing all of it before it was licensed... I plan to buy it when ADV releases it. Apparently (what I've heard), is that they're going to give it cultural notes just like Excel Saga and Abenobashi got, which is actually one of the main reasons I'm buying it... wish they would have done that for Komugi... |

Not exactly in the works anymore, but if you enjoy parody anime, be sure to give Abenobashi Mahoh Shotengai a look. It's probably my favorite parody title and has moments of sheer comedic genius which parody not only anime, but other aspects of pop culture--for instance, an incredibly funny 2001: A Space Odessy parody in episode 3 and a completely over-the-top portrayal of Bruce Lee in episode 4, among other things. The first episode establishes character and plot and there's little parody going on there, but once you get past that it's non-stop hilarity, with each episode generally parodying a different genre of anime. I should also mention that it's from Gainax, who also put together Otaku no Video. So there's a fair chance you'll find a lot to like in this title. |

I'd yakitate!! Japan is an excellent parody of the shounen genre while being a proud member of said genre.

Also, Viga, there's a great classic parody anime that was actually my introduction to anime as a whole - and that's Project A-ko.
From a constantly drunken Harlock figure, to an inexplicably powerful schoolgirl, to the continual destruction of a bridge not at all dissimilar to that of the Yamato, Project A-ko just keeps the parody of anime circa 1986 rolling, and it surprisingly remains a great example of animation to boot. All you need is to see A-ko's "missile hopskotch" to know that. |

seen it not to long ago. My favorite classic anime of all time. like watching or getting into old series with new ones so i got some ref. in it. question: was it just me or did i see lil lum and ...i think its ran in there? |

Not suire if Genshiken is a parody anime since I've nevere seen it but it does poke fun at otaku's. Can someone fill me in on it? It' seems interesting.

Um, I wouldn't really call it parody, since most of what it shows it actually fairly true and accurate of Japanese otaku. Some of it is made to be funny though, so I guess it would be parody in some aspects. Anyway, I'm pretty sure Viga has already seen it... or at least he's checked it out based on his avatar (a character from Genshiken). |

Its not parody but has TONS of anime references by a bunch of otaku. Its a very funny slice of life series. Also the nonotaku saki(my avatar) brings a lot of humor and madarame a hardcore otaku brings a lot of...craziness. |
