On most domestic flights there's either nothing playing or it's just the usual packaged American television shows and maybe a news segment or two. On most international fights I usually get a small mix of one-star and two-star Hollywood films that really only serve to put me to sleep. However, I did once manage to find a “Case Closed” / “Inspector Conan” movie on Japan Airlines. It was in raw Japanese with no subtitles though, and this was a few years ago before I could recognize the content just by the visuals.
Here are some other semi-interesting aspects of flying on Japan Airlines incase you’re curious. In the airport: - You will probably never see a more organized group of passengers than on a Japanese airline - Nearly all Japanese passengers eat in designated areas in the airport and leave no trash at the gate - Nearly all Japanese passengers are surprisingly quiet, reserved and methodical - There are very few heated discussions between Japanese passengers and clerks - Nearly all Japanese passengers will queue up early, as though they might miss the flight - In Tokyo (Narita) Japan Airlines is actually in the old and ugly terminal 2 while the US carriers are located in the newer and fancier Terminal 1 (this may have changed by now as they are slowly moving OW, SA, and ST). On the plane: - English is spoken by the crew, but not terribly well and not unless necessary - They have a camera at the front of the plane that shows you the takeoff roll - The same camera is used to show interesting terrain while in-flight - The flight attendants remove their jackets and don aprons for food service. - The green tea is surprisingly good, even for black tea drinkers like me - The hot towel service is with real towels instead of warmed wet wipes - The food itself is terrible, as with nearly all airlines, regardless of the origin - The aspirin they hand out has no discernable affect on gaijin |

The flight I last went on... they showed the live action movie of Touch (subtitled, I don't think it has a R1 release though, so I don't know where they got the subs...). Honestly, I didn't love the movie... really over dramatic (like most Japanese dramas). It just seemed like a typical sports drama to me. I'm guessing the original manga was better. They also showed Astro Boy... I'm actually not sure which one it was, it was in color. There was an option to watch it dubbed or in Japanese. I just watched the dub since there were no subtitles... Other than that... they showed a very amusing Japanese news program that probably had one of the worst dubs I had ever heard (although, I rarely watch live-action films dubbed, so I don't have much to compare it to other than anime). Me and my sister had a really good time watching that... Also, on the way back, they showed King Kong. There was no Japanese dub, just subtitles... do they usually do this for American movies shown in Japan (meaning, have no dub.)... It really wouldn't surprise me I guess, as the US really seems to be the only country that demands everything to be dubbed, or they won't watch it. I also remember seeing both Spongebob Squarepants and Lilo & Stich, both airring on a Japanese channel, with English voices, and no subtitles... are Japanese children actually supposed to watch and understand this?
They don't even need to do that... it's wierd... somehow, Japanese people are able to wake up (if they're asleep, or at least, seem to be sleeping) at the the exact time of their stop on trains... they have like a built in timer or something...

I do that too on the bus/train. I can't explain it at all, but sometimes I'll pass out for 35 minutes and wake up as the bus is slowing down at my stop. Yeah, I flew into Japan on NW, and it was like "wow! this is a really nice airport!" I flew out of there on some other airline (I don't rember who), but the old terminal did seem really old. It was even worse than the Memphis airport if that tells you something; the new one was about as nice as the new addition to the Seatac airport, which is pretty darn nice (though nowhere beats the DIA terminal). |

I haven't been on a plane in over 5 years so I haven't. I would imagine there might be some shown on some flights as a selection for kids maybe.

I saw JAL's screener of Porco Roso when it came out. It was on film and in Japanese, and they gave us free Game Boy (Ipicked up the Urusei Yatsura game) games. I don't travel very often, and the last time I took a plane flight was in the 90s.
The sub to dub ratio is huge in Japan compared to America. You will even find English subs on domestic R2 releases. This is a nice thing since Japanese dubbed shows are as bad in my opinion as English dubbed shows. |

That'd make a good movie: Pokemon On a Plane. Rated G(It'd be a kid's movie). "I'm tired of these mother****ing Pokemon on this mother****ing plane!" And no, I have not seen any movies while on a flight. Haven't been on a plane since I was 12. |

This isn't surprising because English is the standard language for aviation. This is adopted in order to reduce the amount of confusion regarding communication between pilots and air traffic control. === And those Pokemon planes... it'll be great to fly in one of those.
