Hi All,
I'm new here and an Anime fan. Though I don't think I'm as big of a fan as some of you here Anyway I noticed something in many anime series I've seen which is a good series with a horrible or confusing ending. Is it me or is it the case? Why does it happen? and are there any with great endings? would love to hear from you all. |

Sometimes yeah. I get the feeling its done most of the time because they are just trying to rush to finish the series. For the confusing one maybe they are just trying to make a statement but it just flies over people’s head. Or maybe they just honestly think it's good.
Fullmetal Alchemist = horrible and confusing spoiler[People getting revived left and right moving the story to our world. I didn't get interested in alchemy, automail and other things to get it all taken away for some history lesson movie.] Wolf Rain = confusing to some (I got it) spoiler[My take. In the ending Kiba got his paradise though it might not have been a world filled with flowing river, fields of flower and food waiting to be killed, but one where the wolves and people he had come to trust and had died just a quickly were alive again.] Shaman King = shudders spoiler[This is more of a personal preference having Yoh become shaman king just wasn’t as interesting as having Hao become shaman king.] Those are the one that I remember right off the bat. Is there anything in particular you are talking about?[/spoiler] |

I feel it can also be at least partially contributed to the writers wanting to avoid a predictable ending like there are some shows where once you get into the last 5 or so eps. that you know what should happen or at least want to happen and then they decide to throw some twist at you which throws off the predictable ending and this normally results in a poor or at least confusing ending.

Not all anime has bad/confusing endings... but there is a fairly good amount of them out there. *shrugs*
The best ending that comes to mind for me, is Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. I watched it on and off back when it was on CN, and honestly don't remember much- except that ending. (Please note, this isn't a happy ending, just the one that left the biggest impression on me.) Tokyo Godfathers had a decent ending, although abrupt (I wouldn't have minded another 10 minutes to make sure things were wrapping up like it seemed they would.) For as confusing as Perfect Blue was, it had a decent conclusion too. It's been awhile since I saw that one, tho'. Azumanga Daioh does a nice job of wrapping everything up, given the meandering nature of the show. Kino's Journey is an excellent episodic show that chooses an excellent tale to wrap things up. The whole lot of that show was good. The best example I think of of an anime with the standard 'everything works happy ending' is Midori Days. If you can watch a show about a guy with a girl for a hand, it might be what you're hoping for. |

If you want a clearer ending you might want to go beyond the anime and read the source manga, just as you might read a novel that was the source of a Hollywood movie you wanted to explore further.

I'll also throw in that from what I've read on this site, an awful lot of anime whose endings disappoint people seem to be based on manga that have not ended. This means that the anime teams have to either leave things hanging or patch together an ending with only a basic idea of where the manga author intends the story to go. Some people even go so far as to say manga-based anime should be taken as very long advertisements for the manga they're based on.

This is often the case. Lots of times material is shortened, edited, or just simply left out. The rest can usually be found in the manga. Sometimes it's the opposite though. It's a good marketing choice though. Get the viewer hooked and have the story finished on another medium, now you're going to want to know how it ends so you buy the manga, or vice versa. They also do that sometimes to leave it open. Companies don't wanna commit to 2,3 or more seasons of something unless they know it'll sell. So let out 1 season and see how it goes, and leave it open for more. If it doesn't sell all that well you didn't lose money and viewers can finish with the manga, if there is one. However. if it sells great you can now make more seasons, since you left the ending open. I'm sure there's also the occasional anime where the producers simply ran out of creative juice too. |

That's certainly not the case, I'd give some examples but in a sense even telling you about some happier endings in anime would be spoilers for those shows as it would trivialize the events of the series. Needless to say though there are a number of series that have endings that could be considered good or even happy endings. I think anime just has a greater tendency to lean more towards darker endings than what we're used to and while many aren't exactly bad or unhappy endings, many are melancholy or bittersweet or in some cases they're just plain incomplete.

alballaa, honestly, I hope you find some endings that suit you. Not all anime endings are bad, but sometimes it depends on the one watching it. I could tell you that a certain anime had a fabulous ending, but then there' will be someone posting after me who thought that same ending really sucked. I know that I sometimes think something ended terribly only to find a topic here where twenty people are raving at how great it was.
I won't give you suggestions on what to watch. I'll just say, "keep watching." Sure you're gonna run into a few more endings you don't like or that you find confusing, but you will probably get entertained along the way, and every once in a while you will find an ending that you will really like, and that'll be a gem. That is until you come here and find a topic where twenty people are complaining about how bad that ending was. |

Yes, sometimes anime end bad. Some especially because they are based on mangas.... the anime end at a crucial point while the story in the manga continued. And this is what happened with some of the famous series such as Berserk, Kare Kano or Fruits Basket. So sometimes it's not about the manga ending.

I totally agree with you. Many times people have different tastes and the endings are no exceptions. And I am a perfect example of that. I watched Fruits Basket with one of my friends and when it ended I was totally shocked. The ending seemed so uncomplete, I was like "there's must be something more to this story"... So I searched the manga and read it and discovered the story all over again. On the other hand there was my friend who considered that the ending was perfect and that she didn't want to see how the things really went. As such I agree with undeadben. "Keep watching"! You will find many interesting anime with interesting endings that you might like but which would be found by others odd. So it depends on what people understand by anime ending bad. |

Wolf's Rain has a perfect ending. Cowboy Bebop does as well. Not all anime have terrible, confusing endings.

Not all endings are bad in fact a lot are good, however the bad ones are just so bad you start to hate IT and think most suck.
Like the ending to Mahoromatic: Something more beautiful. (one of my favorites) spoiler[After Mahoro and Suguru spend he whole 2nd and 3rd to last episodes running away to survive, Mahoro makes the promise quite a few times in some seriously dramatic ways that she will NOT leave him and will come back alive, However like 20 sec. after that she self destructs, and leaves him..................the last ep. is 20 years later where Suguru went from a nice, smart guy to a vengeful Borg hunter that is ruthless and doesnt really trust anyone ALL because someone who made him a promise BROKE it.....THEN the "higher powers" bring her back after he's already became an ass, although still has a sight nice side, and is almost dying after being stabbed just so she could drag him off into the light. BULL S***T] the same with Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai..... |

yeah this is a real dilemma i'm having with anime lately. i hate when series have a lousy ending.
on the other hand, i just recently watched "GaoGaiGar Final", and that's gotta be the most satisfying end i've ever seen to an anime. i wish more series could end this perfect. |

I think people are often overly critical of endings. Sometimes when I finish a series that I particularly enjoyed I'll say something to myself like "Nooooo! Why did it end here, I need another episode to find out what ahppened with {insert character/event here}". Then when I find my next show I'll look back and think "Actually, that was a pretty decent ending.".
Something like NGE is definately deserving of criticism though (not death threats, but it dropped the ball). When the makers clearly run out of money then they make hack job endings and thats not fair to the fans (though it isn't always their fault). When they make as much money as they have from whoring out Evangelion then I think the makers have something of a commitment to go back and make an alternate ending in an OVA or something. I don't think that's usually the case though. |

I'd recommend reading through these posts:
Worst Endings: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21195 Non-Depressing Endings: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=27215 Best Endings: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21814 If you could change an ending: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=25864 The Perfect Ending: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=25398 Those should give you an idea of what endings have been labeled as good or bad by many people. I think that most endings, if they're not "there's more manga out there " endings, are generally appropriate for the genre and tone of the series--a pointless harem comedy will have a light, pointless ending, a wtf-psychobabble anime will have a wtf ending, a slow-paced slice-of-life anime won't really have much of an ending, and a bright, cheery action anime will generally have something of a happy ending. If you think in terms of the endings fitting the type of series, most endings won't seem too bad. (I know there are several where I'm in the minority of thinking they're not bad, anyway.) |
