Shouldn't Kawajiri be on there?

Yeah, now that I think about it that is a bit of an odd omission, especially given the sheer amount of directors on there. He certianly deserves a spot more than some of those people. |

None of Kawajiri's films are among the top 50 rated/most popular anime in the encyclopedia. I only included directros who were. Ninja Scroll is 64th most popular, 405th best rated(bayesian) and 634th best rated (weighted). Bloodlust is 60th, 151st and 321st. I could have extended the list to the top 60, but then someone would gripe about a director who had the 70th most popular movie. -t |

Looks like you forgot Tatsuya Ishihara then. He's my favorite TV anime director now. |

At first, I was actually surprised that Kojima was on there, but now that you explained the criteria thingy, that clears up stuff...
So yeah, I picked Masayuki Kojima. But then, I would've voted for any Madhouse regular anyway. Oh yeah, I should expand on why I like him, but I'll do it... later... yeah... later. (though, I'll probably just copy the thing I wrote in the review I wrote over at THEManime) EDIT: Damn... I just realized... I must be a nerd given that I can recognize a lot (or to the very least, a few) of the names in that list... Well, whatever. |

I just couldn't choose. Akitaro Daichi, Hayao Miyazaki, Yoshiyuki Tomino, whoever directed Ouran High School Host Club, and whoever directed The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya... I just couldn't pick one.

I'm not surprised he's not on the list considering the criteria, but while I'm here, I'd just like to mention my love for Toshiki Hirano. He did some great stuff during the 80's OVA boom, namely Iczer-1, Dangaio, and Hades Project Zeorymer.
There's also good old Masami Obari, who I love for his action scenes (Fatal Fury, ETC.), his "action" scenes of another kind entirely, (Viper GTS, ETC.), and...has also given me a terrible headache (Ordian). He has the power to be a God or a Devil! I can hardly say no to Yoshiyuki Tomino, though. His stuff is just plain addictive. Noboru Ishiguro is a great guy too, especially for Megazone 23. By the way, I think this is a neat poll. Most anime fans I've talked to can't name many anime directors aside from Hayao Miyazaki, so I hope this inspires some people to consider them when looking for new anime to watch. The encyclopedia here makes that easier, too. Last edited by Captain Crotchspike on Wed Oct 11, 2006 2:22 am; edited 2 times in total |

I picked Shinichiro Watanabe. The reason: Cowboy Bebop.
Anyway, Hayao Miyazaki is leading by far. I have no idea why but people love him. I just can't understand why people think he is so good. Let's just face it, his anime are for kids. Fact. |

Well, arguably, his (Miyazaki's) anime actually has a far-reach audience... thing...
So, you can say that while it may seem like it's for kids (which I don't think ALL of his works are... come on... Porco Rosso... Mononoke... and even if his other stuff is for kids, Miyazaki has this masteful approach to detail and whatever not many directors are capable of, even if their stuff has adult stuff in it), his works actually have stuff that EVERYONE (not literally everyone, but a lot of people, counting the people that actually aren't into anime) seems to enjoy... ... So, yeah... ... I'd be more coherent, but someone will probably take over for me given that... I think we opened a can of worms. |

What movies for kids can't be good and have an appeal outside of their intended audience? And besides, Miyazaki says his films are family films. Part of the reason he's leading is due to the undeniable fact that pretty much any anime fan worth their salt knows his name even if they don't love everything done by Miyazaki. I imagine some people picked him just because he's the only director they know. And then of course there are the hundreds of others who picked him because they adore his movies I used the poll as an oppurtunity to grow in my otaku knowledge and had a hard time narrowing it down. Ended up narrowing it down to three or so, Miyazaki (let's face it, he's as known as Spielberg and Lucas are in mainstream film culture, to anime fans, and he's got some wonderful films.) Mizushima Seiji (until this poll I'd never realized he did Slayers Next, so that along with FMA put him on my list) and Takuya Igarashi (who I ended up voting for because I knew the others already have huge followings ). I also learned a few directors that I hate their stuff and now know who to blame for my displeasure of certian series. |

I ended up voting for Miyazki. He's pretty much the only director I can think of that I love *all* of his stuff, animated or live-action, Japanese or American. Yes, his movies are "family" films, but since when does that mean they're bad? Anyone who discounts a movie because it can be enjoyed by a younger audience is missing out on some quality films.
That being said, i really wish I could've voted for multiple ones. I love Seiji Mizushima, too. |

Yoshinobu NISHIZAKI, case in point Odin for a movie to turn out that amazing you have to be talented......Satoshi Kon I pick him because of things like PA, and perfect blue. I was thinking of picking Anno but he kind of makes me crazy.

I guess most people haven't heard of anyone else but Hayao Miyazaki.
I was going to vote for Mamoru Oshii. Then i realised Noburo Ishiguro was on the list and he directed Legends of the Galactic Heroes. |
