Em, this news came in a bit late by now (the rally was on Sep 9). Abe already won the election with 464 votes out of 703 total votes, compared to Aso's 136 and Tanigaki's 102 (one voter abstained). His votes were not as many as predicted -- at least 70% = 492, and optimistically up to the 500 threshold. More.

Well, when in Rome.. er.. Akihabara..
Good politicians kiss ass to whatever audience they're in front of. Good leaders will talk about the right thing to do. So I almost wanna say I'm glad Abe won over Aso. Also, upon looking up Aso on Wikipedia (which is the best resource on any subject, especially political ones right?), it seems Aso made some questionable statements about Koreans and a certain ethnic minority of Japan. It's almost like in America if a canidate said that a Mexican would never be in the White House, his political career would be over. Also, I don't know if it's good or bad to hear Japanese youth care even less about politics than American youth. Heh. And I got an article infront of me concerning two govenor canidates as I type that. Of course, I guess I'm a crazy person as I'm quite tempted to vote for an indipendant canidate because I think the Democrats and Republican canidates are full of it. |

Your misguided by Japanese media. Most of japanese major media have poralized attitude.
On 17th Jan 1995 Japanese port city of Kobe was attacked by Great Hanshin earthquake. Tomiichi Murayama, the prime minister at that time, who belongs to Japan social democratic party (A leftistic party), was in no hurry to take maesures. Later he made excuses "Since I've never met such an emergency, I had no idea at that time". Media wouldn't criticize him. To hear the news, your navy united in the offing of Kobe and offered to rescue, but Murayama REJECTED and our media... Our media WOULDN'T SHOOT YOUR SHIPS. What do you think about this "massacre"? Who can believe? They're always despearate to drag capable politicians down and on the other hand they defend leftistic politicians to the death. Not a few internet citizens and Aso hate them. That's one of the major factor for people to be interested in or support Taro Aso. Actually Aso reads more than 10 weekly manga magazines every week though Manga/Anime issue is no big. Both Abe and Aso are very capable and have similar policies though Abe tends to be heroic and magnificent, meanwhile Aso tends to be realistic and positive. Not a few of us "Aso otakus" support Abe as well. For these demonic media we and Aso are quite awkward. That's why they just labeled us "Akiba-kei(=geeks)" in this article. I take it that this is sort of like a US primary. Abe is the only one that said he would continue Koizumi path. He is also the one who spoke most about a bunch of different issues. Regardless of whether the youths in Akihabara gave a hoot, The press in the attendance would have definitely saw Abe as the winner and most knowledgeable. Therefore any press related to this rally would have spread Abe words, not Aso(least not in a serious manner). Not sure how important this rally was in the grand scheme of things anyway(meaning overall vote).
On a side note maybe they need P-Diddy to fly to Tokyo |

Hardly surprizing he takes a hard line stance since North Korea is itching to lob a missile at the population any chance they get. In fact didn't they just recently shoot six missiles into the Sea of Japan. Missiles whose range were specificly designed to reach Japan.
On the surname thing, yeah that seems a little out there. But it seems you can't keep your name as the law is written now. I don't know how powerful ministers of gender issues are over there, but usually it takes more than one person to stop something the vast majority of the populace wants. Which begs the question, does the vast majority of Japan want the law to change? |

N. Korea has a legitimate reason to be on the defensive, considering the "neo-cons" running Japan right now.

And to hold the tyrannical government of North Korea to such high standards of righteousness and reason is laughable. The man is quite mad you see. Edit: Oh, and when you attack some one, and provoke them by landing missiles a dozen miles off the coast. Thats being offensive, not defensive. |

At least Kim Jong Il's honest about his human rights abuses.
The same could be said for visiting shrines of war criminals and developing nuclear weapons. |

Your realize you just compared a visit to a shrine which honors 2.5 million people(and 8 convicted war criminals) located in your home country, to the build up in nuclear arms and then testing the means in which to deliver them by firing said systems in the direction of major populations, right? I know a bunch of people still hate the Japanese, but damn. Kinda unfair to hold those two things equivalent. Visit to a shrine in home country = Nuclear Explosion.
I am just in awe of how you think Il is honest. If I get your drift you would trust him more with your life than the elected government of Japan. Did I get that right? Or am I off beat.? |

There's no such racial/ethnic political correctness in Japan. I'm not saying what Aso said was right, but calling ethnic minorities with bad names is not a big deal there. Their racial superiority is very deep-rooted as long as their most famous racial discriminator is still on their 10,000 Yen bank note. In a chapter of KochiKame, Kankichi runs a division sushi restaurant targeted on foreigners with budget-priced sushi and can only attract dark-skinned working class, while another division of the same chain keep its products pricey and all customers are Whites in business suits. This chapter considerably decreased my love to this longest running manga. |

This post proves to me that your are blindly contrarian to the point where you will defend someone like Kim Jong Il. You are ridiculous, sir. |
