The title may have been misleading, but this thread is about BECK being dubbed. I for one am curious how they are going to do the Japlish dialogue and the singing. Funimation might just keep the japanese songs the same and translate everything else, but they still have that whole Spanglish thing. Reason why I titled this thread "Can Greg Ayres sing" was because Greg Ayres is supposed to play Koyuki. When I read this in the encyclopedia I wanted to know anyone elses thoughts. Although, its not like the encyclopedia hasn't been wrong befreo. i.e. Steven Jay Blum as Kakashi from Naruto.

The original japanese version, they insert song of different singers instead of having the actual voice actor sing. So I don't understand why they would have a US voice actor sing as well.

Did anyone pick up that album thing that a bunch of Texas actors put together (I think some LA actors did it too, but I can't remember)?
I think Greg Aryes sings on that one... Wait... is it even out? |

I'm not 100% sure, so don't take my post as fact, but I think he does. I know for a fact he is a very prominent DJ so It wouldn't be that far of a stretch for him to sing. I know a lot of "in show songs" that are in American are being sung by the voice actors who's character sings them. More and more voice actors are doing this now. One example would be Christine Auten who played Priss in Bubblegum Crisis 2040, she sung all of the songs in the series herself.

I've met him at a few cons, and asked him about previous acting experiences. He's done a number of stage performances including musicals. So yes, I'm sure he does sing. Whether he sings on the dub of BECK, I have no idea.

Well Funimation also dubed Gunslinger Girl in which Triella's VA, Caitlin Glass, sings a piece from Bethoven's Ninth in German (Exceptionally well I might add) so I wouldn't discount them actually having the guy sing if he's got an ok voice.

Actually, Steve was supposed to play Kakashi, but they changed it to Dave Wittenberg (probably because Steve was already cast for Zabuza and Orochimaru). And I think Vic auditioned for Orochimaru, but Studiopolis turned him down because they didn't think he'd be able to come to LA from Houston. ![]() |

I think he meant that there's other factor that isn't obvious: such as Vic having another job, family, airplane cost, housing cost (he's gonna need a place to stay) or it can be any reason. ![]() |

True and I'm not familar with Naruto (which is where Orochimaru comes from?). But, on the other hand, how large a part is it in the anime? And since Naruto has 5 billion episodes long, it will take a while for all of the episodes to come out. So, if they wanted him, why wouldn't they fly him out for a week or two, put him up in a hotel, keep him in the studio for, say, 4 hours a day and have him read/record the lines necessary. Then return to Houston. Repeat above as necessary. And of course, I'm not familar with how VA's really work and like you said "it can be any reason." |

Actually, I'm pretty sure Vic is single. I read an interview once where the reviewer asked him how 'blessed' he felt he was, on a scale of 1-10, and Vic responded 9, saying the only thing he wish he had was a wife and kids. So, yeah, family isn't the issue. That being said, he IS pretty busy...besides his acting job, he also is a worship leader at his church and writes music for TV ads, things like that. So I can understand why they'd be worried about him being unable to come to LA. (But FMA wasn't recorded in the same city he lived in, he communted for that...sure, it was only from Dallas to Houston (or the other way around, I forget), but surely he could at least play a minor role in the series...) |

Sorry for disrupting your interesting conversation, but can we please get back to the topic of BECK being dubbed.

If that was the case, then they wouldn't need Mike McFarland to handle music direction. ![]() So count on the songs being redone in English, just like ADV's going to do with Nerima Daikon Brothers, which Greg's going to sing in as well. ![]() |

And even if he can't sing, it's absolutly amazing what they can do with sound mixing and whatnot in the studios these days. |
