Hello All,

About 8 or 9 months ago i burnt out of anime for the most part and recently after a holiday to japan with my girlfriend i have an ambition to renew my intrests in anime. Can anyone recommend me any good anime that would get me back on the right track, maybe it would be easier if i told you what kind of anime i have an intrest in seeing, i really like to watch some good realistic anime, with the sort of storylines that could happen here in the real world, preferably a romance but please do reccomend some other titles that you think are worth a mention. Sorry if my description is a bit vague but i guess that i could sort of put it simply by saying im really not looking for any anime set thousands of years in the future where everyone transports around in hyper space ships.

Also i have a second question, i remember seeing an anime (fansubbed) when what must have been late last year/early this year, a romance about a group of teenagers which was set in tokyo and also involved the main character trying to become the greatest sports man in japan and he had an idiot pervert friend and there are probobly about another million things im missing out, but if anyone could remind me of the name of the anime that im thinking of it would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

If you've been out for 8-9 months that means you haven't been on the forums for 8-9 months, correct? You might want to read this thread before continuing on.

I'm not sure about a particular series, but i would suggest that you go for a short series to get back into anime. a shorter, really well done anime might rekindle or interests more that a longer series that could prove too monotonous(sp).

i haven't seen enough romance, but the suspense Monster, though long, is certainly realistic.

The show you're trying to think of is Suzuka, and it happens to be one of the better romance anime released in the past few years.

You say you've been out of the loop for about 8-9 months, but my first question is how long were you a fan before that?

I experienced something similar; between 2002 and 2004, I experienced my largest burn-out. Before that, I was a serious fans since 1994 or 95. During this long burn-out phase, it wasn't that I couldn't get into anime at all, I just couldn't get into new anime. After much searching of my fanboy soul, I've come to learn that the anime that I most enjoy watching, most enjoy talking about, and most enjoy supporting and recommending are the "classic" anime that spawned and kept my fandom to continue to grow, even though I may check out and enjoy a new title every now and again.

What is the point of this anecdote? While going through the burn above, I would lament about not being able to stay involved in fandom anymore and people would always recommend their new favorites. Sure, I picked up FMA and liked it alright, but recommendations of Naruto fell compltely flat. I was at first dispaired by Gundam SEED and ened up enjoying the end of it. It wasn't until I foud fansubs of Touch and Yawara! (which I am completely extatic is getting a US release) that I felt at home again.

So, the point of the story is, you may not be as thrilled with Moe Moe Paradise, as was my situation.

If the anecdote describes you as well, then I would look into trying to find some of the older stuff, too, and see if it still appeals to you. If not, I through out a series by the name of Touch again because it's worth mentioning twice.

Of you were thinking of getting into a short series to start on anime again then you pribably want s-cry-ed. Unless you saw it, It has some romance and isn't based on the future at all, Its actually kinda the past. It's a good show to re-sart with.

Maccers, S-cry-ed airs on Adult Swim, by the way. Or at least, it did (I don't know if they're still doing reruns or not).

Back on the 'right' track? Eh? Don't try to force it. I go through periods where I don't watch any anime myself. Months, years, whatever. It doesn't mean I was on the 'wrong' track picking my titles; it just means I was simply into other things. That's perfectly normal. Being a hard-core otaku for decades strait is what's NOT normal IMO. Just hit your local anime rental store and pick up a few first discs from a few series that catch your eye. Then go back and get the rest of the series once you've found something decent.

SalarymanJoe is an oldschooler generation anime fan like me, but I have yet to experience a burn-out (personally hope I never do, and I don't see why it's any requisite like some make it out to be). I have had my taste of the classics and then some, but I never try too hard to relish on the good old days. I'm perfectly happy with all the new stuff coming out. Apparently since you do have access to fansubs and have no qualms against them, you are open to not just stuff coming out on DVD. There are quite a few re-releases of old series so if you want to savor those old school titles like Macross, Gatchaman and the Guyver there's plenty of opportunities to do that as far as your pocketbook will allow. A couple of new titles that haven't been released in NA that I would recommend for someone getting back into anime are Ouran High School Host Club and Ichigo 100% (the latter of which I am currently following and enjoying a great deal). Both are romance shows like you said you were looking for and are lighthearted comedies that will leave you laughing but not require too much brainpower to digest like some of the more philisophical series out there. So those are my suggestions. good luck!

Heh. Well, maybe I'm just lucky because I happen to have one a couple minutes from my house with nearly every R1 anime DVD available for a couple bucks per rental. It used to be called Excalibur (IIRC) and now it's called Dragon's Lair. They also have comics and Dungeons and Dragons stuff, but I've never been into comics and my D&D days are long behind me.

Other than that, I rent from...

www.netflix.com
www.rentanime.com

I also heard about...

www.greencine.com

...that has anime rentals and adult titles along with their hollywood movies.
