I just got This Ugly yet Beautiful World Vol. 2 today, and it has one of those promotional blurbs on that back that says, "Gainax's best work since Evangelion -- Anime News Network"
However, I didn't remember reading that anywhere on ANN, and I couldn't find it in the review of Vol. 1. A Google search with the phrase in quotes also came up empty. Key, can you confirm or deny this quote's authenticity at all? Now, I don't care too much about the line's truthfulness, or whether or not TUyBW really is Gainax's best work since NGE. I just don't see why ADV would resort to what appears to be falsification and deception when they could just put, "From the Creators of FLCL, Evangelion, Abenobashi, His & Her Circumstances" etc. on the DVD instead. Maybe I'm just naïve and making up these promos is standard practice or something. EDIT: I didn't think to check Shelf Life, but as I correctly remembered from reading it originally, Bamboo didn't care much for the series. Every medium shortens/tweaks critic quotes to make them sound really favorable so people will think the product is good. |

True, though it's illegal to claim they said something they didn't... it was probably more along the line of: "blah blah blah 3 page review blah blah blah ... Although this show is predictable and hoaky, just looking at the the sheer awesomeness of Hikari's costume, this looks to be Gainax's best work since Evangelion. Naturally... that's not saying much, but you get the point." |

I went and read the review myself. I didn't see that particular quote either. I saw:
Interesting! A mystery! Will this be solved? |

I've noticed several ANN quotes in different forms of media. I always thought the company using the quote had to tell/ask ANN if they could, or that they were going to... but I guess I was wrong.

Thought it may have been on Shelf Life, but it wasn't, it's actually in the perishables... Tried doing a forum search and couldn't find it either. I don't know where they got it from.

I've got the second volume, but unfortunately I haven't looked at it yet and it's at home (I'm on the road now) so I'll have to take Zalis116's word for it on what it says.
I definitely don't remember making a quote like that at any time in any context, however. I liked the series and gave it a positive review, but not that glowingly positive. Besides, I personally think Mahoromatic is Gainax's best series after NGE. Maybe Zac or Chris knows something on this that I don't? |

I'm actually curious to see where they managed to get this from. Hopefully this thread will live long enough for us to find out.
OT: I hate to be so negative (okay, that's already a lie), but even CB's own reviews are absolutely terrible, especially if you're trying to use them to help choose your next selection. I think I'm going to start another thread just to point out what I don't like about his reviews. Oh wow, I can feel my blood boiling already. I must cherish this moment. |

What don't you like about Chris Beveridge's reviews? I think he does a great job with them if I do say so myself, and he's been reviewing anime for around 8 years (or as long as Anime on DVD's been around). If you have a problem with his reviews, I suggest you discuss it over on the Anime on DVD forums and not here. Anyway back on the topic. I did a search last night and couldn't find where the quote came form either. I read Theron's review of Kono Minikuku Vol. #1 a hundred times and not once did he mentioned anything about Evangelion. (He did mention about the similarities between Kono Minikuku and Mahoromatic, which of course are true.) So I don't know where ADV found the quote. Perhaps this is another attempt of "Fosterizing" an ADV-licensed title. Last edited by biliano on Sat Sep 09, 2006 4:24 pm; edited 1 time in total |

You're more than welcome to come over to my forums and go on at length. Contrary to popular opinion, most reviewers do want to get feedback on their stuff. I've never closed a thread that's been critical of my work as long as it's done in a constructive manner. That said, if you start one here, it'll likely get closed. ANN has a similar policy to ours in that if you want to give grief about another site, do it on that site. We don't allow ANN bashing threads on AoD and the reverse has been pretty true as well though I'm sure the staff here can speak for that. Hope to hear from you on my site. |

Heh. Not really; I read a lot of forums and do obvious searches on them as well. |

If TUbBW is really their best work since Evangelion, Gainax has a lot to strive for.

Kono Minikuku is pretty good, but nowhere near the level that Evangelion is at. Personally, I think that FLCL is Studio GAINAX's best work since Evangelion. I actually rated it higher than Evangelion. Last edited by biliano on Sat Sep 09, 2006 7:27 pm; edited 1 time in total |
