Well, you can download anime to your hard disk by subscribing to Bandai Anime Village. They also have streams there. There's also Toonami Jetstream, but that's just "streaming shit". You're really not going to find anything that's legal and let's you download anime to you hard disk for free. That wouldn't make any contribution to the industry if it was all free.

There are no legal anime sites that let you download anime. Downloading anime is illegal. It's considered piracy because you don't own the copyright of that anime. If you didn't produce the anime yourself and you didn't produce the anime yourself and you didn't get a sign piece a paper from the guy (or woman) who did produce the anime, you're not allowed to use it. So it's wrong to dowload anime or manga because a title may be licensed. Try Sakechan's thread about the fact that requesting downloads is bad.

Nope, he came to the forums to ask for legal downloads (using profanity).

Requesting legal downloads in not against the rules.
However there are very, very few legal free downloads. There's a fair number of legal pay downlaods, and every once in a while some company puts out episode 1 of some series for free for promotional purposes. But all in all, there's no point for companies to make anime available for free, where would they make the money to pay for it? Generally speaking the licensors aren't even allowed. Their license contracts only allow them to do certain things, anything not explicitely allowed, is by default, not allowed. Nutech (a North American licensor) is currently being sued by Ken Groove (A Japanese producer) for, among other things, selling anime downloads. Any time there's a legal download, we generally mention it in the news. -t |

Though technically not a download, you could pick up the new issues of Newtype when they are released. They have a free DVD with them that usually have three episodes on it.
The August issue has Negima, Grenadier, and Papuwa (I may have spelled that wrong). Plus a lot of a trailers. |

There probably are some websites, like people are providing, but the quality of them or the ones you want are probably just "shit". Unless there's something better. |

At a general industry Q&A panel at a con, it was said that the Japanese licensors are very wary of any kind of Internet streaming, paid downloads, or anything else that might impact their domestic market. That's probably one reason why you don't see anime episodes showing up on the iTunes store yet.

That's not really true. Canadian law only allows you to legally download things that you either already own a legal copy of, or that you intend to load onto an MP3 player or burn to a CD. In the first case you can download because you already have a licence by virtue of owning a legal copy (note this is the Canadian interpretation, not the US or elsewhere), and in the second case because the price of MP3 players and blank CDs (but not DVDs) sold in Canada includes a copyright levy.
Downloading something you don't already own a licence for and you intend to burn to DVD or play from your hard drive is still most definitely illegal in Canada. However the burden of proof required by a copyright owner before they can get a court order to force an ISP to hand over traffic logs is in practice too high to be achieved. So it's illegal, but you'll probably never get prosecuted for it. |

Sorry man they're all illegal. But I heard that downloading unlicensed anime is "legal". If you want to watch anime, go to youtube. They have a huge selection of uploaded episodes and you can watch them anytime you want |

It's not legal, just that most anime companies don't bother dealing with it until it becomes a problem , ex. when someone released a subbed DVD before it came out in Japan, which is why Media Factory (the one's that did School Rumble and others, not sure if it's factory, but I'm pretty sure) told people to stop subbing their anime. For the most part you won't get into trouble downloading anime that isn't licensed, maybe even some anime that is licensed, but depending on the creator as well as the licensor they'll most likely ask you to stop fansubbing (C & D letter) or downloading or they will take legal actions. Unlike the RIAA and MPAA, anime companies don't want to get mingled in lawsuits, they just want to protect their interests, and if people oblige to their requests they don't pursue the case further because it would cost too much time and money. All in all, it's a moral thing, I'll admit I download anime, but once I get a job I'll be buying the anime I liked (waiting till I'm 18 this november, the pay for most jobs open to people under 18 is hardly enough for a student to even waste gas getting to the job, much less be able to purchase anime). I personally think that people who want everything for free and will do everything they can to prevent the people who paid for that thing from getting money really need a second look at their moral code. I can understand stuff like that coming from people who really can't afford it, but from people that can afford it but just want it free is just, well, sickening. Now, if it's something that's been heavily cut or edited in the American version, I can see why people would do that, but then most people still buy the Japanese version so the people who did it right get payed while those that didn't leave it alone only lose profit.

It should only be illegal if it's domestically licensed. I'm for fansubs as long as they're of unlicensed anime and the fansubbers cease all work/distribution when the show in question has been licensed. It helps create a fanbase early on, as well as free publicity for the eventual license holder.
