"Garden of Words is, in two words, “very Shinkai.”" So, not for me then!
Shinkai's one of those directors I can appreciate but honestly have no love for. His films are all the same to me, which to be fair a lot of directors repeat the same themes and story ideas over and over again, Tarantino being one of the biggest examples of this. The difference is that I don't resonate with Shinkai's stories at all like I do with say a Tarantino film, not that Tarantino and Shinkai stories should ever be compared. I just get so fidgety and bored by his films, no matter how much I can appreciate the artistry. I can see why people adore his work, but I can admit I don't like his work.
I saw a couple of episodes of Dirty Pair when Nozomi put them up on Youtube. I have no nostalgia for the 80's myself, but I can dig badass playful women when done right. I might check out more of the show at some point but I'm in no rush.

I wasn't a fan of 5 Cm or The Place Promised, so I was surprised when I really enjoyed Garden of Words just like Bamboo explained.
Also, who still uses the word "babe" these days? That must be as old as the Dirty Pair themselves. I haven't seen any of them myself, but I do want to someday.

The link to a Q&A with Shinkai just takes you back to this shelf life.

The Garden of Words was an absolute visual triumph and had fantastic tone and a solid first half. The second got a bit silly and indulged in a little of the old "I must explain my feelings and inner motivations as though I'm writing an expository essary"-style dialogue, but it was still good.
I liked Mysterious Girlfriend X, but reading the manga has convinced me the whole thing would have worked better if it were much shorter. Even ignoring the idol nonsese, the manga's been practically stagnant for a while now. It's not bad, but the great concept only lasts for so long before it runs out of steam. We got a bit of that in the anime, too.

I enjoyed Garden of Words as well, though some parts felt unnecessary (scenes with the main character's brother, especially). I couldn't shake the feeling that it could've been 10 minutes shorter and nothing of value would be lost, and it bugged me a little. Of course, I would have to ignore the fact that the visuals are amazing and fantastic. As I said to a friend of mine, I think this movie is "style over substance, but it's just SO MUCH style".
I have mixed feelings about Sentai's dub for this movie. Performances were solid overall (well, except for one bizarrely old-sounding high school girl), but script and direction seemed very hit-or-miss. Yukino's crying scene in the end particularly was pretty sloppily handled and actually made me chuckle a little. Definetly not one of their best dubs.

Personally, I thought Garden of Words should've been longer. Not a lot longer, but it moved at a snail's pace for most of the movie, only to start rushing the conclusion in the last few minutes. Because of that, even though I thought it was pretty good otherwise, it's just "rental" material for me. Easily one of the best looking and animated titles I've watched in quite some time, though.

Ohhhh, how it warms my heart to see someone mention Simoun! And they are damn right, the singles and collection set do look very nice together! In a world of terrible semi-yuri getting tons of attention, the very best one seems to have evaded everyone's radar (possibly because it's terrible a semi-yuri if you ask me, but fantastic at everything else. Though the semi-yuri is scaring everyone off or something).
Yeah, go buy this if nothing else this week (did I mention it has an MSRP of $20?)

I must admit that I was initially a little bit cynical about Garden of Words. My inner cynic wondered if it was going to be 5 Centimeters per Second in the rain. However, I was pleased to see that in many respects, it ends up being the polar opposite of 5 cm. Also, I think the short nature of Shinkai's films are a point in their favor; I always want to know more about the characters and how they get on after the credits roll.

I definitely enjoyed Garden of Words and is a fan of many of Makoto Shinkai's other works. I'm definitely looking forward to his future works. Oh God, the visuals...god-tier.

If you call Simoun a semi-yuri, that makes me feel very sad. Because then an already small genre would have one fewer series, and if you apply the same cut-off throughout, I would be able to count all the yuri series produced on fingers of just one hand. So let's be all-inclusive, particularly since it is an amazing series that everyone should watch at least once.

Garden of Words was great. It's back to classic Shinkai again in line with what he normally does ala what he did since Voices of a Distant Star, after his somewhat of a failure in his experiment with Children who Chase Lost Voices.
Btw, offtopic but Bamboo when about is your "The Stream" column coming out? Curious on what you think of the Summer season so far

So Bamboo, how did your take on Girlfriend change between the original streaming and the home release? Obviously there should be higher quality sound & visuals (for better or worse,) but which method of watching or dosing did you prefer?

Sigh. People are far too childishly squeamish when it comes to Mysterious Girlfriend X and the spit. I've said it before and I'll say it again; get over it.
As for the actual show itself, it is an excellent portrayal of two pairs of teens in respective relationships getting to know their partner. I also liked the exploration of fetishes as the characters woke up to their sexuality.
