I have bought the first four volumes of the ADV Macross release for the sole reason of watching Macross in Japanese. While I love it, I have noticed that as you watch the episodes, you will see the black edges of the film on the corners.
This will come and go. It is sort of annoying. I have Robotech Remastered and I don't remember seeing this for the Macross Saga.
Has anyone else noticed this? By any chance does anybody know if Animeigo's Macross have this imperfection as well. If it does not, I think I will just bite the bullet and buy the Animeigo set.
I cannot believe that ADV put out a product with this sort of imperfection.
Am I the only one who has noticed this? Thanks for your help and input in advance. Hopefully someone has the Animeigo set and seen the new ADV release and can enlighten me. Thanks again

They use the same masters, and unfortunantly, lower-budget TV anime come with imperfections that cannot be reasonably fixed.
Deal with it.

Agreed about the masters, though I don't recall seeing this on my AnimEigo DVDs (then again, it has been nearly four years since I last watched them), nor did I notice them when I tried out ADV's Macross DVD (which I am getting ready to sell).
Also, Steven, not only is it lower-budget TV anime inperfections; it's lower-budget TV anime imperfections from 24 years ago.

I just got my animeigo dvds a couple weeks ago, so i couldn't tell ya Something i've always noticed though, "fullscreen" anime is never really 4:3 as there are small bars at the top and bottom.

I'm going on memory here, so don't crucify me if I'm wrong, but I dimly recall that ADV used a different master from Animeigo. I also dimly recall a discussion on the Robotech Remastered first or second disc that explained that they used more of the cel for their remastering, which ended up requiring them to use some damaged sections of the cels that weren't originally broadast.
So that might explain it. I'm sure somebody knows better than I do, but since nobody has said anything else, I figured I'd throw it out there. Now somebody can tell me I'm wrong, and we'll have an answer.
