I swear its so annoying when you buy a whole series than all of a sudden a month after there is a box set for it. Like i bought the whole series of planets and now theres a box set of it coming out for like 40 bucks after i spent like 120 for all the dvds. But than its kind of nice because i've been noticieing that bandi is like makeing a box set for every thing it seem like so thats kind of nice. Than geneom box sets are still costly so that kind of sucks. than adv still make alot of thin packs lately so thats nice.
Than i just want to state that i like bandai just because now all the hard to find animes can be found easly. Than geneom has been haveing all the dvds that i like, but still like i said it sucks on the price of all there dvds there all like $30 bucks and there box set cost the same price as all the dvds in like one box. than adv over all seems like there thin packs are all ways cheap so thats nice. well thats just what i think of my faverate 3 companys of bandai, adv, and geneom. I just wish they would bring more box sets out and maybee have a little bit of a lower price. so what are your favorate companys and box sets. Oh wait. Anyway, I can sort of understand the frustration behind paying so much and others getting it for less. However, no one is forcing you to buy the singles. Subsequently, buying the singles or the "inflated" version) will allow company in question to produce and buy more things, because well, they'll be able to. Can't really put it any other way. |

A new thing that ADV is going to start doing is releasing the art box with the second dvd volume instead of the first. They announced that at Otakon this year. They got a lot of complaints about getting the first volume and not liking it and being stuck with the box. They figured this way you can watch volume 1 and see if you like it and then get the box with volume two. Hopefully this way more people will be happy.

That's a really, really good idea for ADV. I would probably end up buying more artboxes that way. Right now, I buy them for the occasional series that I'm sure of. Or Funimation titles where the boxes are just freakin' sweet. I hope Speed Grapher picks up, to justify the box. Yowza.
I have no problem with the box sets. I get a little ticked when I buy a series that's crap and a box set comes out, meaning I could have seen the crap for much less money, but in the case of Planetes, I'm really glad I got in on the ground floor and saw it when I did. Maybe not worth the extra money, but I don't mind. Frankly, I enjoyed it enough that I'll be glad if other people pick it up at that price and enjoy it almost as much as I did. Very good stuff that one, I thought. |

I normally don't care if I have the boxset or not, but I bought the first disc of Basilisk.. but after I saw the collector's box I wish I would have gotten that.

I'm not much of a box person myself, but some of the boxes that Funimation has been putting out recently (Basilisk and Negima come to mind) seem to be getting a lot more attention than the standard fare. I noticed more than one anime website was listing these as "backordered" early on.

Actually, I'd prefer it if they sold the box with the last volume. I understand them not putting it out with the first volume--I like that idea. But, it seems weird to release it with the second volume. IDK, it's just weird. I think it'd be better with the last volume. By then, you probably have every volume before it (and basically know how much you like the show, although you still have to see the ending because it can make or break it) and so you can decide if you want to dish out the extra money for the box or not when you buy the last volume. That seems much better. At least, I think so. |

I mostly agree with this... but I know in my case, at least, that would actually stop me from buying a series. Example: Princess Tutu. I've seen part of it. I know I like it. But I haven't bought it- becuase I was waiting to see if an artbox would come out. And since it didn't... I still don't have it. Now I'll be waiting for the thinpack to see if any extras get the axe before I choose. The volume 2 thing, while odd, will work better for me- I can know earlier on if my artbox-obessed self can start dishing out on single volumes instead of waiting for a possible artbox.

Here's the thing- you know you like the series, you know you want to buy it, and singles aren't an issue. In the case of Princess Tutu, where the actual sales of a singles release really matter, you're going to let it go because you don't have a wrap-around piece of cardboard? Lets face it, ADV's boxes aren't always exactly up to a decent standard. If people are keen on buying artboxes, get one commissioned by Paul Champagne. Sure, it'll cost you like, $30 or so, but you'll actually have a box that wont get completely messed up eventually. |

I know how that goes. I bought the first DVD of Gunslinger Girl, I didn't know a box existed because I'd seen the CD in the store but never any boxes. I figured with only 3 CD's the company probably didn't bother. Then one day, there it was, so I actually just bought it as well and gave the first DVD I already had to a friend who liked the series but didn't have it. |

I don't care if it's the first, fourth, or last DVD, I just want there to be a box at some point *cough*Bandai*cough*Scrapped Princess, Planetes, Fantastic Children, Cowboy Bebop*cough* I'm a sworn artbox whore, and I've even gone back and bought Vol. 1 + Boxes for series that I'd collected as singles, like His & Her Circumstances, Full Metal Panic!, and Last Exile.
ADV has been a bit better with their boxes lately, at least for the series that they decided to do an artbox for. I've got some old, flimsy ones for series like DN Angel, Super Gals!, and Abenobashi, but their more recent boxes, like Full Metal Panic!, NGE Platinum, and Chrono Crusade have been quite good. I just wish that some of their shorter, low-profile series like Diamond Daydreams, Ghost Stories, Nanaka 6/17, and the upcoming Comic Party Revolution had boxes, no matter the quality. In general, most boxed sets are good quality and good value, as long as they aren't too cheap and don't come out too soon after the last disc. I mean, for a series like Planetes, which I don't have yet, it's a welcome good deal, but for other series where I did buy the singles, it can feel like a ripoff. I'm looking forward to getting some series I've seen like Girls Bravo and Samurai Champloo in boxed set format, as well as other series, like Otogi Zoshi, which I've never seen any of, but is supposed to have great DVD extras (the best of 2005, according to Key). For one, I only buy the volume 1 box sets when the price isn't that much higher than the price of volume 1 by itself or when it comes with something (like a poster, keychain, plush toy, soundtrack, etc). I don't buy the boxes that come with nothing special, yet are priced like $10 more than the individual volume. And if there's a thin pack out, I'd buy that over the individual volumes in a heart beat. Well, actually, I'd do whatever is cheaper (which is usually the thin pack box set). If the individual volumes would actually come out cheaper (which would probably never happen), I'd buy them. I don't like the "weird" box sets, though (like the tin cases, wood cases, cases that are irregularly shaped, etc). I'd never buy those. I like the normal-shaped, cardboard-boxed box sets. |

Funny thing is that RightStuf seems to have the individual volumes cheaper than the box set... which apparently I can't find any good examples considering the stuff I knew is currently on sale. Azumanga Daioh - Thinpack has an msrp of $70, not to mention it is a 5 disc release with all extras removed. Each individual volume is on clearance, because the thinpack came out, for $6.99. The 6 volume series is available for a little under $42. My example doesn't really work because RightStuf currently has this thinpack on sale for $40. But normally the price is cheaper for individual volumes. I've heard that Aumanga Daioh has not only good extras, but also has a couple inserts that give more of an understanding to the series. I know I've seen the Peacemaker box set for $70 at my local Best Buy, when I can get all individual volumes for $56... and I don't have to pay tax on the individual like I would at Best Buy. |
