Oh look tech nerds.
My dad got a cheap Blu Ray player but when I tried it with an import combi-pack it didn't play. And after that fail we couldn't find a code to make it region free.

Well when you say "cheap" im guess it's some off brand player so i guess there'd be no chance of a hack code or some modded firmware to flash it with.

Some of the really cheap OEM players sold under different names in different supermarkets let you change region with a remote hack. E.g. for the Technika it's
Switch on
open tray
press "set-up" on remote
enter 9113

IIRC that's just for DVD playback not BD.

On that one you can change BD region on the fly, as many times as you like (but not set it to region free). Same with my Toshiba.

This ones a Sony BDP-S185 so its not a dodgy manufacturer, unless you count that old generation of PlayStations that only worked upside down.
I really want to play US Blu-Ray on a UK player.

You're probably way out of luck with a Sony - they make movies and were heavily involved in the BD standard so if anyone is going to stuck hard to the region locking guns, it is them.
