I recomend the game if you're looking for a gas. The game is fun and generally kinda goofy, in an endearing way. Its gameplay is more an excuse to get the gang together and interacting. Since that's pretty much the point of the game, I say it succeeds at what it does.
What the game doesn't have is replayability. Once you've beaten it, there is no reason to play it again.
Also, speaking as someone is typically NOT a fan of the majority of characters on display here, And in fact is pretty ignorant of much of the Namco, Bandai, and Sega rosters, even I found a lot to enjoy. And the game opened up some new avenues to franchises I hadn't really thought about checking out before.
Like Super Robot Wars and .HACK.
I say its worth the $40 if just for the novelty of it all. And its got a pretty good CD soundtrack compared to most games that comes with soundtracks.

I recommend it. The best part is catching all those lovely little references (one character makes a couple offhand that aren't even related to Namco, Sega or Capcom games). It's great fanservice and the battles are just chaotic swirls of attacks flying everywhere. : )

Well you can play through it again with all your amassed items and a higher difficulty, but I think the repetitiveness of the game's structure might turn away those from making a second run.
Unfortunately, the CD soundtrack is sadly pared down from the one the Japanese version got (due to licensing issues with certain songs of course), but it's still worth it if you can still find the LE.

I got it a few days after the release (free shipping from Amazon always takes longer than I'd like), and I have mixed feelings. It's fun, flashy, and it has solid SRPG gameplay that's slightly more fun than selecting attacks from a menu, but that's really all it has going for it. It's fine going in with zero familiarity with any of the characters (I've only played Xenosaga and Devil May Cry), but I'm going to assume that the more represented games you've played and liked, the more you'll enjoy this.
And a big disappointment is that the game is just too easy, no battles outside of the ultra-linear storyline mean that there's no grinding, and you'll always be just as powerful as you need to be. It might be a good 'intro to SRPGs', but for someone like me who started playing SRPGs with games like Devil Survivor (my first SRPG), which is loaded with customization, requires you to grind for hours, and gives you incentive to play multiple times, PXZ is kinda disappointing.

I like it quite a bit so far. Its a fun strategy RPG with lots of fanservice both in the visual kind and characters from many different game franchises.

Those two games are not equivalent things. One is a fighter the other is an SRPG while they only share the Capcom part of the crossover. PXZ is also a lot more about in-joke humor (one joke relies upon the audience knowing that Valkyrie's Voice Actress Kikuko Inoue claims to be 17 years old)

This game has been alot of fun for me. I'm near the end now and it has gotten a bit tedious with each battle taking well over an hour to complete. I'm surprised there was no mention of the fact that you have no choice as to who goes in to battle (you can customize which solo unit to add to pairs though). I'm going into battle with 20 units, and only like half of them I actually want to use, but the others have been forced to fight because of the huge numbers of enemies that show up. Also the penalty for exp when you are a higher level than the enemy is enormous. I was trying to get Megaman to be my super ultimate op powerhouse by having him get the final kill for all bosses and a lot of units. Did this for like 7 battles and he is only 2 levels higher than the rest, when they were just clearing out regular monsters. These aren't necessarily negatives, just different from what I was expecting.
But I got it more for the crossover fun than anything else, and it is absolutely delivering on that.

This. If I want a fighter can get really crazy fighters from Japan that make MvC look like meh. Shonen Jump super stars comes to mind.
But the point of x zone, and what cross edge and chaos wars try to do is take the anime people love and combined with the rpgs these types tend to play (speak from experience) and try to make it work. And its just harder to do, for one you need an actual story that cover 8-20 hours of gameplay versus, a fighter doesn't really need anything.

A lot more goes into the average fighting game than anything that ever went into this. I'm curious if they even playtested the later stages.

but it lacks the one thing that marvel vs capcom 2 , and all the other crossover fighting games ( SNK VS Capcom , Street Fighter X Tekken ) have that than this mess have. replay value. the gameplay is only 8 hours max. after that nothing else. while the rest have moderate replay value , which is why even after 10 years marvel vs capcom 2 is still insanely popular.

8 hours? More like 50-60 hours. I'm only 15 chapters (out of 40) in and I'm at 16 hours already, and I hear the later chapters get even longer.

Why are you comparing this game to another genre? Its an SRPG game not a fighting game. You don't even seem to know what Project X Zone is. Have you even played the game or are you just hating on it because certain people who have played it don't like it.
