I just watched the first episode on Adult Swim and I can see that the three parts of the episodes were obviously from very different periods in the show's history, based on the differences in the animation and art quality. Regardless, I want to know what is up with the dub. Did this show receive the same "treatment" the AS version of Super Milk-chan got, or is this true to the Japanese version?

Thanks.

I haven't been able to see the dub, but if the quality of the picture is different and the characters look different, then they've mixed up the shows. A real clue would be whether Himawari is in their or not. For years they had the show going without Hima, and then she came along.

Uh, what? Why would the show look different? I don't understand what you're talking about.

And, yes, Himawari (the baby) is in the show.

But why would they mix around episodes? It's not like it's a yaoi or hentai show that is edited.

From what I unnderstand :
First off, this is only a test to see if people are going to watch it. AS tried to show Milk-chan, and while I found it to be funny as well as some others, the show did not go over well with the majority of AS viewers.
Second, the dub is different because the average AS viewer is not an avid anime watcher. Japanese humor and american humor is very different in things like delivery and the cultural backround or inside jokes. This is a lot like what was done with Lupin III. They tried to have it seem more "americanized" in its humor.
I honestly do not think we are going to see too much more of Shin-chan on AS. The american auidence isn't going to get it and the anime audience isn't going to like the changes made to it.

Just my 2 cents.

I haven't seen the dub yet but I did find they have a profile on myspace. So far from what I saw there it looks pretty funny. (here's the link http://www.myspace.com/shinnohara )
They have about a minute clip on there. Again I haven't seen an entire episode but from the clip it looks like the dub would still be funny here in the states.
If they do mix the epsidoes on this one will it matter? Is there an actual storyline (in order) or can you watch the episodes at random and still get the jokes?
I didn't care much for Milk Chan but I think I will like Shin-Chan. I read some Manga years ago for Shin and loved those..

They dd mix it around. A dead giveaway is Ai Suotome. She appeared much later in the series.

Again, sorta. Some of the characters first apperances are different than each other (Plus the absence of one, Buriburizaemon (the talking pig), who's VA died in 2000) and for one to appear before the other would be a very bad continuity problem.

For example, taking the first episode shown on [adult swim], Masumi Ageo (aka "Green Leopard") appeared over a year before Ai Suotome (whom was shown earlier in the episode before the Catfight at the end) was introduced.

If I were a fan of Shin-Chan before it's AS airing I probably would have been annoyed with the fact that the episodes have been jumbled up. But since I didn't know it didn't bother me. My initial interest in the show came from simply knowing of the title (never sought it out though). I actually liked the show. It seems that ADV is getting better with each attempt at their localization projects. Instead of dropping lame pop culture refrences left and right (a la Milk-Chan), they seem to be going for more of a Japanese style of humor while still keeping it American (Ai is a great example of this, and I really liked her). Anyway I find it an enjoyable show to just kick back with and have a nice few chuckles.

FUNimation, not ADV.

So, basically, the dub of Shin-chan is an "Americanized" version of the Japanese dialog? It keeps the same basic flow but changes the jokes to American jokes?

I think it's funny as hell! My favorite lines:

Quote:
He saw my wife beat me!!

Silly.

If we were in China you'd be in a dumpster now!

Wrong on so many levels; but still hilarious!

Quote:
No one can escape...from the Pink P***y!
Ench-man: Oh great, the censors are really gonna love that one!!

**rolled on the floor laughing his ass off**

Quote:
Look at me! I'm riding Ted Kennedy!

The final great chuckle of the night!

I really hope this show in the lineup. I've been waiting since 1999 for it to come out here, and it's been worth the wait.

Been a while since I last saw it. But I don't recall that much Japanese jokes. More along the lines of the Salaryman and general everyday kinda stuff.

Well, if they left in the original Japanese jokes, nobody here would understand it. Just like with the straight dub of Milk-Chan, which I HATED.

True, I've read the original manga and most people in the U.S. wouldn't get some of the the joke/term.

BTW, I've caught Crayon Shin-chan tonight and it was pretty good. I hope people are not turn off by the old school animation and support this classic series.

"put your mouth on a sausage!" Laughing

i'm willing to admit i was wrong on this one, this is so much better than Case Closed. kudos to Funimation for taking their own liberties with the dub.
