Well, here I go...
I absolutely can't stand my local Sam Goody. I have had problems with them numerous times, but the one that stands out the most was, when it was several weeks after the release date of YYH: Poltergeist Report, and I went there to pick up the DVD. I looked on the shelves for it, and it wasn't there. I'd been going in there every week and checking, and I figured they should have it by then, so I went up to the counter and asked them if they knew when they'd be getting it. They're like "We have Yu Yu Hakusho volumes 5 and 6...". I sighed and said that I was looking for Poltergeist Report. The people there just don't seem to understand that when you ask about a certain title, you want that title and not something similar. I had the same problem getting a copy of Anime Insider recently. The guy looked it up on the computer, having this air of "I'll check, but I know it doesn't exist". He said that there was no information on it, and I rolled my eyes and left the store, having quite aenough of this crap. A few days later, I went to Suncoast, which is an hour and a half's drive, and looked on the shelves for it, and it was right there. I am just disgusted by my Sam Goody. They're selection is crap, they're manga is even worse, and the people there know nothing about anime, but they think they know everything, and, if they mess up, instead of admitting that they are wrong, they sweep it under the rug and pretend that whatever was mentioned doesn't exist(a la YYH: Poltergeist Report) Does anyone else have a problem like this with a store?

[/quote]This is what a Best Buy is for!  [/quote] Too true. Sadly, I live in the middle of nowhere and we don't have a Best Buy, so it's easier to go to Suncoast when we get the chance to go to Fort Wayne, as Suncoast is in the mall, along with some good manga carriers...

When there was a Sam Goody here, (They put some cloths store, but it not much better.) they mainly sold music, while Sunscoast toke care of the video end of the entertainment world (Of course, Best Buy step in later to take care of computers and what not). While the do sell videos at SG, Suncoast, time to time, sells soundtracks to the movies that they sell. So basically, I never counted on Sam Goody selling .hack//Sign Vol 4, just like how I don't counted on Sunscoast to sell the new Iron Maiden CD.
Besides, the people that works at those types of places (Video, Music, Book) often times doen't know it all when it comes to what their are selling (Just like I don't know how to make bread for Butternut.) Just tell them the name of the title and to check to see if they have it on their database. In this day and age, movies like Yu Yu Hakusho: Pltergeist Report should show up. If not, then it's hard to find and you'll have better luck on E-Bay.

For starters, I'd just like to say that your problem isn't really all that surprising with Sam Goody, especially since they are mainly a music store. That being known, it's not really all that strange that they wouldn't know anything about anime, especially since most of the employees work there because of their love of music, not anime. What you should do is go in with a bag from another store when that same employee is there and ask about Anime Insider, and when he again tells you he knows for a fact it doesn't exist, pull a copy out of the bag and prove him wrong, preferably with other employees around, but then again I'm kinda malicious that way. The problem I really have with them is the fact that everything is sold at MSRP. Why pay $30 for a DVD or $18 for a CD when you can go to Best Buy and get the same DVD for $20 or the same CD for $13. |

Hi all, long time reader of the ANN site but just recently joined the board here, never thought this would be my first post.. hehe
Anyway, just to clarify a little, Best Buy no longer owns Musicland (which is Sam Goody, Suncoast, and Media Play). I happen to work at a Media Play so that's how I know this. We were sold earlier this summer. As for knowledge of anime or manga in the stores, that will of course depend on the employees there. At the store I work at, if someone gets an anime question they usually will look for one of us that knows something about it to get the question answered. And while Media Play's prices are not as cheap as some other places, we have a pretty decent selection of anime and manga. (but not always the stuff from smaller distributors... AnimEigo, etc...) The DVDs are priced lower than Suncoast, but you can still find better deals if you shop around. Hope that helped, glad to be on board! |

I had some trouble with reserved anime before at suncoast. But I had some stroke of luck with FYE as of late

To clarify on things: Best Buy owns Suncoast, Sam Goody, Musicland, MediaPlay, NetFlix and a couple of other audio/video shops in small parts of the U.S. I should know, as I used to work for Best Buy. |

Working at a Media Play right now I can assure you that Best Buy does not own Musicland (Sam Goody, Media Play and Suncoast) anymore. We are currently owned by Sun Capital Corparations. And I am sorry to hear that the first poster had such a hard time at one of our stores, more then likey it has nothing to do with you. The problem is all the people that come in with almost no information or actual wrong information and expect us to find just what they want. So us workers, we get used to sometimes not finding things and this not being werid. No I dont agree with them totally brushing you off...its just hard sometimes. I listen to mostly Jpop now and the fews times I have had to sub in music I have a TERRIBLE time. I know almost nothing about it, but things happen, people call in sick and I get stuck in the department for a few hours. I am certain I have made very stupid mistakes and when I do I feel bad for them. As for prices, stores in malls always have higher prices because they are paying such high rental fees, if you don't like it don't shop in malls. And yes things at Media Play cost a bit more, but at least compared to my local Best Buy we have a much larger selection. The problem is our chain simply isn't as large so we can't mark things down as low and take the loss of money. I dont even know if this is on topic or not *lol* Feel free to delet it if it is not... |

The suncoast down here is pretty good and strangely the sam goody next door closed.
Don't have a bestbuy yet but its in development along with Barnes and Noble The only question i have is does BnN actually have a section for manga? or is it like an ordering type of thing. If they have a large selection I"ll be ransaccing the place.

The Sam Goodys near me are RecordTown stores now. Still good for music CDs (if people even BUY CDs anymore), but I too go to Suncoast for anime. This year, my local Suncoast started carrying anime posters, toys, t-shirts, more manga, and Japanese candy (but mostly Pocky and Yan Yan). Still no wallscrolls, but all the game stores here sell wallscrolls. The comic shops here though have started carrying less and less manga and anime models. I think business is very bad for them as of late, even the famous Golden Apple Comics.
The Barnes and Nobles here do carry manga, but the selection is not great. Borders here is great for manga. But back in the day before DVD and Suncoast, Sam Goody was a good place to find stateside releases of anime on VHS, and Golden Apple was awesome for manga. Kinda makes me feel old. ,Caul |

The Barnes & Noble here in Midtown Atlanta has an excellent selection of manga.
They also seem to ignore street dates as well. |
