Is there an age limit to this? Like 16 and over, or maybe working permit required?

Is the position limited to a reviewer of only anime? As in, could the reviewer supply reviews of manga or anime-related books as well?

Yes, of course you can also supply reviews of manga and anime-related books, but anything that isn't an anime or a manga needs to be OK'd by me before you write the review.

Tempting...I would have done it for Tokyopop if they weren't so cheap. But I might consider it for ANN, because then I could have the thrill of dealing with hate mail like Zac. I think I was getting letters for about 6 months after I trashed Skies of Arcadia for GameFAQs. Laughing

WTF?! You didn't like Skies of Arcadia?! Your reviews = nullified.

(Just kidding...Or am I? Maybe...but also maybe not...Hmmm...)

Will the new reviewers also serve as Bamboo's backup to Shelf Life just in case she can't work on the column for a period of time (as was the situation earlier this year)?

I don't know... I think that having all those letters would quickly drive me insane.

There'd better be a medical plan, or at least a stipend for the bar if you want people to deal with that llama Wink

a couple quick questions.

You mention screeners. Do you get a choice? Or rather express a preference? Like not to review pr0n. Razz

Does this mean we can get press badges for cons? (not totally serious, but it would be cool)

4 reviews per week, so like 4 episodes? (I assume not), 4 5 episode dvds? (that's that 16 hours if you watch Sub and Dub, without even hitting the keyboard), 4 26 episode box sets? (ok prolly not).

What exactly does 'below industry standard' come out to? (PM me if you dont' want to post it publicly, i'm just curious)

Back to screeners, is it just screeners? Stuff we're buying anyway, fansubs? Are the screeners only selected by the vendors, or can we ask for backcatalog stuff?

Style question. 3rd person or 1st person editorial style?

About how many words per piece? (I'm seeing 400 - 1000 for most on the site now)

Most reviews have the synopsis first, is that; written by the reviewer, written once for the site and repeated across all areas, or supplied by the vendor?

...

I think that's it

Now, would we have to buy the dvds ourselves, or would ANN provide the dvds and manga (I own plenty of manga series, 28 volumes covering about 9 series)?

And do we get paid (not trying to hint anything, just a bit curious is all)?

Finally, would we have to move for this job?

Also, is there an age limit?

You can express a preference, but what you get will largely be determined by what I need reviewed. There are three senior critics on the site, myself, Theron and Carlo, who are given priority in terms of what they want to review. If you say "I'd like to review Saiyuki vol. 6" and neither myself, Theron or Carlo are doing it, it's yours.

No. Press badges are given only to senior members of the editorial staff and they come with a lot of responsibility. If you go to cons just to have fun, trust me, you wouldn't want to be saddled with an ANN press badge anyway. We would work you pretty hard.

4 DVDs or manga, or any combination thereof. You can do 2 manga and 2 DVDs, etc etc etc. If you do a box set you can have extra time to review it and potentially we can work something out wherein it counts as more than one review.

If you want to know how much we pay you'll need to send in a formal application to the email listed in the news item.

All screeners will be sent by me; reviewers are not permitted to contact the companies themselves and ask for stuff. Doing so will result in termination. You will be reviewing primarily R1 DVDs and manga, but if you'd like to do an R2 DVD, we can accomodate that. No fansubs, unless you're doing a preview piece, in which case we would have to iron out the details first, and even then we tend to discourage pieces like that.

Also, there isn't enough product for us to provide the entire reviews staff with 4+ DVDs a week so we do rely on you to review anime and manga you purchase. Any new critic for the site needs to be an active and frequent anime and manga buyer.

It's a review. You shouldn't be referring to yourself at all if it's avoidable. If you have to, you need to use first person, but I will most likely edit it out of the review. I can't even imagine what a review of something written in 3rd person would be like.

750-1200 words is our target.

You need to write your own synopsis of the title. Take a look at one of our reviews for an example. We don't just copy the back of the DVD text nor do we paste from the encyclopedia.

Would've loved to have "re-applied," so to speak, but as it is there's no way I'd find the time to do four reviews or more a week, what with class and all.

Again, yes, you will be recieving screener copies of DVDs and manga, but you need to be actively buying new anime and manga yourself. We simply do not have the resources to provide everyone (after this, 5 people) on the reviews staff with 16 DVDs a month.

Yes, you do get paid. Terms are explained to you if I decide to pursue your application.

No, you don't need to move; this position is basically a freelance job.

As for an age limit, I have very high standards when it comes to who I'll allow to write for the site and I have reservations about anyone under 18 or so having developed their skill enough to meet my standards. If I come across a stellar writer who happens to be 16, great, but I also need to be able to send you mature titles (we don't review hentai here but there's a lot of racy comedies and violent dramas that we do review).

So with that in mind I'm going to say 17, since that's how old you need to be to get into an R-rated film.
