Geez, they got so many things wrong in this article...
No, manga has its origins in ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and it evolved into something that looks a lot like a comic book.
No, no. AE86 is the body model designation, it has nothing to do with the year model - Takumi's car is actually a 1985 Trueno.
A minor detail, but again, no - no racer from Akina ever challenged him. His challengers were all from other teams. The whole description of "drift" just sickens me - "the art of sliding a car sideways repeatedly for as long as possible" - wtf? Drift is a racing technique designed to get around corners at high speed, it's not friggin' "art".
Wrong - volume 33 was just relased last Friday.
No mention of Fourth Stage? Still, as a die-hard fand of Initial D, I'm glad to see it's getting some exposure (even though I'm sure this screening will be of the "tricked-out" version with its horrible music and out-of-place F-1 racing sounds). I'm guessing the mention of "a theatrical movie-length animated feature" means they've finally licensed Third Stage: The Movie? ::happygasm:: And maybe after that, they'll get Fourth Stage too? \/ |

Tokyopop's been "planning" to bring Initial D to American TV for a long time now, and yet I've yet to see any results. I mean, didn't this predict it would be on TV in May 2005?
Of course, this being Tokyopop's atrocious "tricked out" version, if it doest get on TV I hope it ends up on G4. Let them get that instead of "Blood+". Please... |

Well they never said that the year and the 86 in AE86 were related, but it could certainly be interpreted that way. Also saying that Takumis car is a "Trueno" could be misleading, as there were Truenos and Levins of both the AE85 and AE86 (remember that the only difference between the two, Trueno and Levin, is the headlight style). The full name would be Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX, and as the Sprinter was part of the Corolla lineup it's not incorrect to say that it's a Corolla.
I don't know what year Takumi's is but I do know the tail light changed in 1986, so the 1983-1985 models should all have the same rear (unless they have been modified).
No actually they are quite correct, drifting is very much more an art and for show than being fast around the corner. Only in a few cases, like gravel rally, is it truly useful, due to the low grip condition. It's Initial D's portrayal of drifting that is incorrect. |

Technically it is a Corolla in the USA.
[/quote] Well getting around corners at the highest speed possible is an art that require skills. Not everybody can just drift unless they know what they're doing. |

I'm predicting that Initial D will not end up on G4, but on Spike TV. I mean, Spike TV's already going to air an anime, Afro Samurai. And Initial D has that Spike TV taste.

In the Manga Takumi's Hachi-Roku is the 1983 Model and in the Anime it is the 1985 Model. AE86 is the Chassis identification. Thematically Initial D really fits in with Speed Television if anything. It's a pure sports anime, not some crappy "bling-bling" Fast and Furious crap Tokyo-Pop tried (and failed) to market it as. This seems to be a last pitiful pitch to networks to pick up the show. Tokyo Pop had a sure fire hit in their hands, but they decided to market it as something it was not and it tanked. Drifting has become this obnoxious show thing, but in Initial D it was intended to show it as a viable racing technique in some instances (other than Rally). Hell, as the show progresses less drifitng is done and when done it's very slight. |

Getting this thing on TV was the reason why Tokyopop made the alterations they did. But that was over four years ago.

"But that was over four years ago."
As was Initial D's chances of real success. They stifled a lot of their potential there, and only the fact that the series continues running in Japan and that Drifting is actually (slowly) gaining popularity in the US could possibly fix that. Neither of them inspire confidence. |
