OK, here's how it goes. I'm currently going back to school and as such don't have a full-time job anymore. Student loans have allowed me to not have to work, but I do hold a part-time job delivering pizzas for the Dominos on campus here. Now lately I've been on call, and only go in when they need me, if I choose to.
Now, how this is relevant to these forums is this. I just got called in to see if I want to work tonight, but I'm not sure if I really want to. The only reason I'm finding to actually go in tonight is because I'm thinking if I go in, I'll make close to $100, more than enough to buy the last two DVD's in Wild Arms and get a few more discs in the RahXephon series. As it is I got called in last night and the only reason I went in was to make enough to go out and buy the last disc in Excel Saga to finally finish that series off.
So, does anyone else find it pathetic that anime is controling my desire to go into work? I know both me and my wife do, but I think she kinda wants me to go in so I might be able to get something from a series she likes, despite the fact that I'll be out until almost 5 a.m.

Wish I had your problems...
Seriously, if you only have to work to support your hobby, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Enjoy it while you can.

Manga makes a lot of my decisions. Every single step I take in life I think about my precious manga collection and whether or not it will still remain untouched.

Although i'm just a teen and can't work yet, anime and manga make me decide if on any given weekend i'll volunteer to do errands, yard work etc. for my neighbors and mom, so that i have money when a new disc, or book of a series i've been watching or reading comes out. Can't wait till I'm 15 or 16 to work at some fast food place and make more money to support my hobby.

i wish i could just spend my money on anime, but i have bills to worry about and student loans to pay off, not to mention that $8 an hour isn't really much (which is why i'm still stuck at home, too ). what free money i do have usually gets spent on anime and manga or one of my other collections

I have scholarship, which pay for things, but then I intern. Interning pays enough. I have doubled my collection this year. It is very nice, and I am ahead by not getting loans. Loans suck, since you have to pay them back.

Gaining money for your hobby isn't a bad thing, as long as you don't go too far. If I have a job , which I don't have right now , I would help pay the bills for internet and such. The extras would be for anime and manga.

heh...actually, when I used to work in a specialty food store...after I had already quit and they wanted me back, the condition was that I be allowed to leave and go home to watch anime when it came on tv, then go back to work when it was over (this was a few years ago when there wasn't much anime on tv to begin with...now I don't think I could get away with that..)
course now I work, to pay for school, and babysit (I hate babysitting) to buy anime....

NEVER SAY THAT AGAIN!!!!!
When I was 15/16, I didn't have cable, and there was ZERO anime on. You can probably just go home from school and watch hour worth every day - FOR FREE! That's the good life if I ever heard it! If you get Tech TV and CN, that should be enought anime every day to fill out your schedule with school and all.
If you do get a job, that's great, you'll have money to buy more anime. But with school, homework, and work, when will you have time to go get the anime, and actually sit down and watch it? it's a dilema I struggle with every day.

Well the only reason I worked this summer was for gas money, and anime. Bought over 60 dvds. So.. I feel your pain, but there ain't nothing wrong with it.

hehe, interesting thread. I think just about everyone has been in this situation. Whether they think about it or not.
I have more than one hobby and I have to juggle them. so I prioritize them. Anime/Paintball/Sound system. So do I play enough pb to justify getting that new Squall I've been wanting+extra equipment?
Is there enough time between releases to save up enough to take care of living expenses and that shiny new dvd?
Will getting a prologic 11 surround sound system really make the dvd/game all that more enjoyable? I don't know!!!
I've been pulling my hair out dang it!!!!
So tortured

Well, at least you aren't saying "should I go in or watch some anime" go in, work, buy your dvds.

100 bucks for delivering some pizza? man jump on that! I'm 22 and just got a real office job for the first time in my life, the prior 6 years were in retail. Toys R Us, The Wiz, Tower Records, Gamestop. Now while these gave me a lot of good people skills, I hated every minute of it. However I live at home, and dont have to pay rent to my parents, so I have it pretty good. The only thing I have to pay for is my credit cards. I dont drive, it lets me save A LOT of money, so I usually support my habit. Anime. Heh. So if you can make 100 bucks in an evening of work go for it while you young. Just dont stay in that kinda business. Retail is the pits. customers=the biggest annoying scumbags in the world. (with the exclusion of me of course, since I know how it works )
