Of getting an idea made into an anime (directed by me) ? Is it at all possible for an American to make a SERIOUS animation? Hell is at all possible for someone to not laugh me off out the door? I'm turning nineteen at the end of the month and I finally know what I want to do. Every time I saw a movie or anime I always found some criticism with it, thinking I could do much better (Which doesn't mean anything) By sixteen I made a short manga/comic book with a noir-western flair to it. I've written about two complete scripts, and have ideas for way more.

My question is, if you where in my shows, what would you do? Should I finish up college, and take some more art and writing classes? Head straight for Japan with big portfolio? I DON'T THINK I'M THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO EVER WANTED TO DO THIS, AND I DOUBT I'LL BE THE LAST!

So should I just forget about this and go to law school? Or pack my bags for Japan after college. If so, what classes should I take?

I suggest your first step be to learn to speak and write fluent Japanese, because you're going to need it to have even a remote chance on finding employment in the anime industry in Japan. Even then, I wish you a ton of luck, because it's next to near impossible to accomplish.

If you mean your idea straight to anime, then, no, you have no chance whatsoever. Now, if you have an idea that's successful here in the U.S. first, then there would be a small chance that it could be made into an anime (Witchblade, Powerpuff Girls), but that's still very unlikely, and you'll probably lose all creative control over the anime adaptation.

I don't know about law school, but you may want to give up the dream of moving to Japan to get into the anime industry.

I think of the anime industry a lot like I think of the video game industry, in that I enjoy both, but want nothing to do with either. I would think that turning your hobby into work would be frustrating and make you hate both the career and the hobby if things don't go the way you planned.

You can always go for the apparently "high-paying" and "fun-filled" world of Japanese High School English teacher. That sounds like fun, right? RIGHT? Sad

To answer your question browse the Hey, Mr. Answerman column. Up until very recently there was always someone asking "How can I break into the anime biz?" If you want to go into animation though that's great. However the chances of it being an anime are next to 0 (In fact Syd Mead is the only American I can think of who did significant work on an anime, and he just did the mechanical designs). There's nothing that says you can't make it here or try to find some other way to tell your story/stories. Breaking into entertainment is definitley a from the ground up process. You can't just walk in and expect people to love your idea because everyone has one.

Step 1: Be born Japanese and live and grow up in Japan
Step 2: Doesn't really matter since its probably to late for you to complete step 1 Wink

If that's impossible, then create a hit novel series or something and hope that someone in Japan wants to make an anime out of it.

These guys crushing up your dreams are all partly wrong. You have one chance:

1) Go to japan
2) Pull out your gun
2) Be real mean and threaten the right people

If you're violent and scary enough, you might get that groundbreaking chance Twisted Evil

Otherwise, you don't stand the slimmest chance.

Steve Benett did some drawing work back in the 80s, so Syd Mean isn't the only one (Source: Steve Benett Anime smile --go to one of his storytelling panels at a con, you won't regret it)
But, as AnswerMan or AnyMan will readily tell you, there's not much of a chance. If you really want to work in the industry, it'd be better to go for the American side of things, and get some kind of work in the English version production. If you can write scripts, there's always ADR scripts and subtitle scripts to be written, and that'd be a way to get your work into the world, even if it isn't original. Going to school would also be a good idea.

I know him (personally)! He's half Japanese, anyway. He visited Studio Pierrot and somehow got in on Urusei Yatsura.

Live in Japan for about a good ten years and integrate yourself into their culture, get some good contacts and stuff, and then you'll be all set Smile

I say take some courses in college that will prepare you for a direstor job, and try to break into the American animation world first. If you're succesful, there is a chance you could get into the anime world, but don't hold your breath. And don't expect it to happen automatically, as it will probably take many years.
