I wonder is that animation just hype-up fodder, or the real thing? If it is that's gonna be the shiznat, representin' the niggaz in the hood.
But seriously, it looks good, and SLJ has always been good voicing in those kind of roles(His recent Gin Rumy from the Boondocks comes to mind). Judging by the last 10 secs(with the dialogue), it seems it might take a more "black slang" direction as far as the script goes. I hope so, because that is so damn funny to me(Boondocks coming to mind again).
I really wonder how would the Japanese interpret something like that?

I just saw the trailer and man, that show is off the hook. It's like Samurai Champloo and The Boondocks meets Samurai Jack.

Strangely enough the first thing that came to my mind was Boondocks and Samurai Champloo .

Could you elaborate on that?
Honestly, this is the first anime I've truly been excited about. Sam Jackson is always good, and The Rza is one of my favorite hip-hop producers. I think with them involved, this series may be better than Champloo.

The only saving grace for the trailer was the animation (probably from the 1,000,000 USD budget.)
Other than that, all I see are shitty character designs, a cliche story and uninspiring music. Oh, and stupid, barely understandable black slang that makes me half throw up in my mouth.

Hey all,
I actually work at Gonzo and am one of the producers of Afro Samurai. I'll be happy to answer any questions when I check these forums.
BTW - Christopher Nolan is NOT attached. That information is incorrect. Chuck Roven, the producer of Batman Begins is attached to the live-action adaptation. But no director has yet been assigned.
Hope you all will enjoy the animation! It's not going to be like anything you've seen - I promise. It's a great and sincere revenge story.

I dont see where you are coming from when you say shitty character designs, I think they are great and different. Its a revenge story, it may be cliche but that doesnt mean it will be bad. Now when you say uninspiring music, Im guessing you just dont like hip-hop/rap and "barley understandable black slang"? I understood it just fine...
I personally cant wait, like others the first thing that came to mind were Samurai Champloo and The Boondocks

Different almost never equals good. Look at things like Reign the Conqueror. Terrible.

If it's on Spike TV, trust me, it will be.

Well, I do think hip-hop and rap are probably the worse things that could have ever happened music. That and shitty emo rock.

I can understand Japanese better than I can understand stupid black banter.

Just because it is on Spike TV, that does not mean it will be bad. The show itself is being produced by Gonzo and to me it sounds like all of your problems with the show derive (save charachter design) from a general dislike twoards black culture.

Right now I don't trust Spike TV with this. So far, whenever the MTV Networks family meets anime, it ends in disaster.

It's not like the MTV staff is making this anime.....Don't forget Afro Samurai is being animated by Gonzo. It's not like Gonzo has a horrific track record, but it will be an interesting series to say the least. Also has there been any other celebrity that are suppose to lend there voice to this series?
Till next time,

wildarmsheero, were you not hugged enough as a child?
I think it looks quite stylish. And while rap/hip-hop music isn't something I normally go for I think it should fit well with the show. I'll try and catch an episode or two if I have the time.
