Missed it as I ws asleep, and already have the dvds, but was wondering if the opening and ending themes were the same length, or shortened like Soul Eater's?

The opening theme and ending theme were shortened. And just to make it clear, that's Funimation doing those edits, not Toonami or Adult Swim. They're just given the episodes as they are from Funimation before airing them. |

He says he targets 15 year olds, who are not "kids" per se... But whatever, when it comes right down to it, it's just a label, determined purely by the publisher, and is not based on content, nor based on what you think the demographics are or should be. Kuroko no Basket has a large, if not majority female audience and it's still Shounen. If Sailor Moon were published in the Jump franchise, then that would also be Shounen. It's black & white and the same rule applies to other categorizations (Shoujo, Seinen, Josei). An example from the other side of the spectrum is Otome Youkai Zakuro, which NISA released in the US. People overwhelmingly mistake it for Shoujo, when in fact it's Seinen. Since you're focusing on Shueisha's titles, may I remind you that To Love-Ru Darkness is also Shounen, serialized in Jump SQ, along with other manga like Blue Exorcist and Claymore? There's no exclusive demographic that Shounen--or Seinen etc--is supposed to be and people should stop try pigeonhole it into being exactly this or that.
You are probably going by the US classification. I don't really watch Pokemon, but the US TV anime is censored and edited, and likewise the manga is also heavily edited by Viz, including redrawing many scenes, removing fanservice, anything offensive, in order to market it as "Kodomo".... in the US. However, the original Japanese publication IS absolutely Shounen. Again, not my call, it's the publisher's. And if you think about it, if it were a truly Kodomo title, they would not have to do all of the censoring. See: Banned Pokemon Episodes (With Video!) (e.g. See at 6m35s) Censored Pokémon Manga - Pokémon Fact of The Day Censored Pokemon Cards - Pokemon Fact of The Day It's also ironic, the DragonBall Z manga, despite being the prototypical Shounen, and aimed at "kids" so to speak, got into trouble in the US, being treated as porn (banned from some Highschools) and sometimes child porn (banned from Toy's R Us for this reason), due to the light ero-comedy with some nudity, which was why Viz ultimately had to censor it too. Telling them, "But it's Shounen! It's aimed at 10 or 12 or whatever year olds!", while true and I think is just fine, didn't help them either. |

Meh, I'll only watch One Piece on Adult Swim if it ever gets ahead of the DVDs.
DVDs: Episode 263 vs. TV: 207. |

Shonen Jump caters to preteens (11 ish) to older teens (up to 18ish) but it's read by people of all ages. The men in their forties who read Kochikame in the 70's still read it now, all sorts of people read Death Note (which obviously wasn't really appropriate for people under 15 or so...), girls read Bleach and Gintama just as much as the boys, and One Piece is no longer just a kid's manga/show, it's a cultural phenomenon. Their are multiple books written for adults about Luffy's leadership style. Variety shows (which take up about 50-60% of Japanese airtime) have specials dedicated to the famous scenes. The movies are consistently the top grossing at the box office every year in a row. Close to a third of every kid in elementary school is wearing or carrying One Piece merchandise at any given time, and I guarantee almost all of them own at least one piece... ...no pun intended.
FWIW, Eureka Seven was played at 8:00 AM on Sundays, and I wouldn't really call it a kid's show. It just happens to be that weekend morning is a premium time slot because it guarantees ratings, like the "golden time" (primetime) in the late afternoon/early evening. But where I live, there is almost zero anime played in primetime, and I'm not willing to stay up and watch series at 2 AM like I did when I was a student. If you want to watch anime on TV in Japan nowadays you pretty much have to get a DVR. Or watch reruns on Animax. In which case you might still need a DVR. On another note, Pokemon sort of fits in the gap between kid's anime and shonen, because it's targeted at the two groups who play the video games, which are about 8 to 14 (ish). The real kid's shows are the ones like Inazuma Eleven, Pretty Cure, My Melody, Bakugan (interestingly the toys are actually based of old-fashioned Japanese toys called "bi-goma"), sentai shows, Kamen Rider, the new glorified TCG commercial of the season, etc. Of course, that doesn't mean SOME adults and teens don't watch them... |

Speak for yourself, please. Most fans I know hate those series
WOW, there's people who think One Piece isn't for kids? http://www.fujitv.co.jp/en/ Even according to the site it's for kids. It's no different from the true 'real kid's shows' you mentioned. It's lumped in there with Chuggington actually |

since when did this turn into subs vs dubs...sheesh!
The thing that disappoints me about this is that Cartoon Network did not start at the beginning. I'm out of money on the DVD buying front and I don't have time to stream a few hundred episodes on my PC. Now I have to save up and buy volumes 4-8 of the collection sets to get to where Toonami starts minus one episode.( Personally I wanted to see the Alabasta and the Skypia arcs since I haven't seen those yet) Also for those of you out there: The Funimation dub is very close to uncut with all the blood, sword cuts and bandages. I'm not sure that it's perfect but I believe it's close. You can nitpick about voice actors if you want to but I won't. |
