Has anyone seen this movie? I just saw it today, and i have to say i didn't enjoy it. I thought it was kind of boring, was too long, and i didn't really follow the story, even though i was paying close attention. Also ANN gave it straight A's. What fo you think about it if you saw it?

I didn't feel much for it either. I thought itwas kind of boring too and the ending was just ok. The story was just mediocre. I almost fell asleep to tell you the truth.

I saw it and i own the dvd which must mean i like it...yea i do i think its great. Brillant animation and CG backgrounds, i also love the characters especialy the robot detetive. The film shows our fear of technology in a nut shell and for me that only works with this film and the matrix.

Well everyone has there own tastes. Its weird because i liked the Matrix but not Metropolis, probably because Matrix had more action. |

Cool i like Neo too! Its too bad the other 2 movies werent very good. And yeah your right it had good characters and great visuals too. |

I saw Metropolis, and I have to say it wasn't what I had anticipated. The commercials for it on Adult Swim made this movie look impressive and awe-inspiring. After actually seeing it, though, I felt underwhelmed.
The visuals were stunning-- they were the best visuals I've seen in anime. They were crack in eye-candy form. Unfortunately, I found the pacing to be extremely slow; before one hour passed I began to wonder when the movie would end. Had the pacing been better-- not necessarily faster-- I would have found myself holding Metropolis in higher regard. As it is, I have to say that I found Metropolis fair. |

I completely agree with you one that one. I saw the trailer on the Cowboy Bebop The Movie, (which i bought) and i thought it looked cool. I rented Metropolis and now that i saw it i'm glad i didn't buy it! |

Metropolis is not in any way similar to Cowboy Bebop or The Matrix, so anyone going into it expecting it to be something like those is going to be disappointed. Heck, despite some nifty action scenes it's not even an action movie. It is, in fact, a very loose adaptation of one of the early, all-time classic manga series which was, itself, extremely loosely-based on one of the early great live-action sci-fi action movies (we're talking 1930s here).
I was very much taken in by the whole story about the relationship between man and machine and the comparisons to the Biblical Tower of Babel, and the tragedy of spoiler[a robot girl who was made to be so human that she wasn't aware she was a robot] really worked for me. The final dramatic confrontation was an amazing visual spectacle, and I thought the musical selection to go with spoiler[the collapse of the tower] was an especially good choice. Metropolis may not work for everyone, but it is one of the better anime movies made to date. I think it's deservedly at least an A- movie. the Metropolis anime, like the german slient film it's indirectly derived from, enjoys both a rich and thoughful plot, and a plodding and wordy presentation. (I use the term 'wordy' loosely in regards to the original slient film.
 )
I think the people who love .hack//sign are going to get the msot out of this movie, personally. |

Lang's original Metropolis was actually 1927, and is a classic film in every sense of the word. The animated Metropolis, while not the masterpiece that the original was, is still an exellent anime. Much of it's appeal to me comes from the world it creates. Stuff like the Matrix (a good film that's very overated) is fun on a visual and action level, yet in never really pulled me into it's world. Metropolis is so vivid and passionate in its depictions of the city and it's that I actually felt like it was a read city. The amount of details put into the world is phenominal. The story treaded familiar ground (though it does so very well) and like you said it probobly isn't going to appeal to people looking for big, loud sci-fi, but I think it's one of the best examples of the genre. |

I saw Metropolis back when [AS] aired it last year (same night they premiered Samurai Champloo), and that movie just put me to sleep. Back when I saw the commercials leading up to it, I'd expected something akin to mecha anime.
I know I'd never want to see it again.

In regards to the Adult Swim airing, I was a little disappointed with it because they cut a rather important scene where Keichi and the robot girl first meet and interact which sort of sets the tone for their relationship for the rest of the movie.
The movie did have some slow pacing problems, but I rather did like some of the characters, the story, and ragtimey music. If you were looking for some sort of action packed anime then this probably wouldn’t be something I would recommend, but if you were looking for something kind of different then this might be something to mention. |
