I've been neglecting my anime collection lately (I'm more of a manga person) and I've developed some interest in older titles from the 90's. I really enjoy fantasy, random comedy, and dark psychological drama, and I don't mind old-fashioned art or whatever. My favorites include Excel Saga, El-Hazard, Eva, Big O, the Miyazaki films, Akira, and .hack//SIGN. So far I've come up with a list of anime that look enjoyable: could anyone here give me some input into which titles I should buy first?

Definitely check this one out if you don't have it as I don't see you mention it or in your list of what to look at. As far your list...seriously, half of it I could say are highly rated and fit into your wants. You'll just have to pick some. |

Wow, you've got FIVE titles that I've rated as masterpieces. All of them are within my personal favorites list. I've recommended them to many others before, so in order to avoid repeating myself over and over (plus I'm lazy) please take a look at my comments for them in my My Anime. Well, for fantasy you've got SIGN and presumably Mononoke under your belt, and those are two of the big ones. You'd probably want to see Vision of Escaflowne next, and your anime fantasy viewing isn't complete without Twelve Kingdoms, which I consider the best of them all.
Haibane Renmei and Now and Then, Here and There are two of the best dramas around, although I don't know if I'd consider NTHT psychological. Paranoia Agent isn't a favorite of mine, but it would certainly fit your dark psychological criteria. Of the other three on your list that I've seen, Millennium Actress was pretty good, Wolf's Rain was excellent, and Last Exile is one of my favorites. Last Exile has some superficial similarities to Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, although it's alot darker, so you might like that best out of the three. |

Actually, Slayers is one of my favorite series, I forgot to mention it since it's been so long since I saw it on the International Channel.  Right now I'm patiently waiting for Funimation to rerelease it...
Thanks everyone, I think I'll prioritize on NTHT, Last Exile, Haibane Renmei, and Millenium Actress, Kino's Journey and Wolf's Rain for now. But if anyone has comments about the other series I'd like to hear them. |

I would go for Wolf's Rain and RahXephon first. Studio BONES, a very good animation studio, made them. They also have a complete collection that you have buy. The Wolf's Rain will hurt the wallet a lot. RahXephon has a Thinpak that you can buy for cheap. I finished Last Exile recently and enjoyed it immensely. It has very likeable characters and an awesome story. Jin-Roh and Millenium Actress are great movies to watch along the way. Satoshi Kon directed Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent with interesting themes. Check them out when you have the chance. I am borrowing Haibane Renmei from a friend and found it to be a great watch. It starts off with a friendly tone building it up to a serious theme as you keep watching it. There is a lot of symbolism in it and I need to finish watching the last volume. You have picked really great titles. I have seen most of them and would definitely recommend you to buy any of the ones I picked. As for the order, that depends on what you want to see. You sure made it hard for me to rank them. 1. Rahxephon 2. Haibane Renmei 3. Wolf's Rain 4. Last Exile 5. Millenium Actress 6. Paranoia Agent 7. Jin-Roh One last note, if you enjoy the fantasy genre, definitely check out Scrapped Princess and Fullmetal Alchemist, more great series from none other than Studio BONES! Hope this helps you in your desicion! |

Haibane Renmei - I just began watching/collecting this series and I have to admit it does live up to all the hype.I just finished up volume 1 last night. The comedy, take in mind that I´m not a big fan of over-the-top anime humor but do enjoy subtle comedic events, and mystery of the show has kept me interested even though it´s a series with no fighting, atleast the first 4 episodes but I doubt it´ll change.
Kino´s Journey - The first thing I have to say is to watch atleast the first volume before you judge it. Some people don´t find the first episode all that entertaining, my girlfriend hated the first episode but I loved it. The story-telling, the music, and the several action scenes are all great. Ninja Scroll - The TV series or the movie... or both? The movie is a bit more mature than the series. With a lot more fighting, a quicker story, but still great characters and unique fighting scenes. Great for swordsman-action fans. The TV series is a bit less graphic, but pretty much the same. By ¨graphic¨ and ¨mature¨ i´m mainly referring to sex scenes. Although there is no hentai quality scenes, it´s still very apparent. Great series for action fans. I´ll leave it at that for now and come back for RahXephon, Jin-Roh, and Irresponsible Captain Tylor later... Italy Vs. Germany is starting. ...Repost... I don´t believe that Dranxis just means to list series and say they´re good. Tell is why the hell you thought they were good. Remember, Dranxis hasn´t seen them so try your best not to give anything away. |

I think you will find the same titles being suggested, but hopefully I can add a bit to the other posts.
Nadia, Gainax's first tv series, is a grand adventure in a Laputa-ish style. It ranks amongst my favorites from the early 90's, but doesn't have as much visual gloss as many of the newer series. I just went through all of the Last Exile episodes once again (this time I checked out the English and on a 16:9 set) and enjoyed it even more the second time through. The plot was mapped out early in the series since there are many subtle events sprinkled through the series that make sense once you have watched the entire series. It is well thought out and reminds me of Laputa, Final Fantasy 7, and Nadia. Gonzo has been a strong supporter of 16:9 series, and are now (i think) makin all there shows in 5.1 surround. I've heard that Samurai 7 is mastered in HD, and there new shows from Funimation all are amazing. Kino's Journey is an amazing series which really reminds me of the old Galaxy Express 999 and Twilight Zone episodes. The series is very poetic and while it reminds me of Haibane Renmei in it's quiet nature I will favor Kino's. I'm sure you will find others here who will lean towards Haibane. Now and Then, is one of my all time favorites as well. I will say if you like Kino's then you should make this your next purchase, or the other way around since the do have an oddly similar atmosphere to me. Now and Then comes across as a very mature (well developed and complex) series as opposed to the many mature (juvenile and raunchy) series out there. Wolf's Rain is yet another one of those elegent atmospheric shows out there. As you might have noted most of the shows that I have given a nod to have been from this category. I will warn you that these series do all have some depressing moments. I will suggest this series over Bones' Rahxephon since I think the excecution is better handled. If you like Wolf's Rain then check out Bones' Rahxephon or Scrapped Princess. Wolf's Rain is there most unique (style) work to date. Ninja Scroll is a hard one for me to recommend. I just watched the show again a few nights ago and was impressed with the new 6.1 audio mix, but the show really doesn't do anything for me on a emotional level. The movie comes across as one fight after another, much like a video game. I've always wondered why the film is so popular. In some ays I actually prefer the tv series over the movie which is an opinion not shared by many. Millenium Actress on the other hand is a brilliant film. I feel as though the movie is Kon's greatest work, since the amazing Perfect Blue has a few rough edges, and Paranoia Agent felt a tad long and redundant after seeing his movies. This is by far my favorite of the movies you have listed. On second thought I will add that Jin-Roh is a not so distant second for films here. This is one of those films that is amazing to watch and has some gorgeous sequences, yet is hard for me to remember. I think this is typical of Mamoru Oshii, since I just rewatched Patlabor (the new Honeammise edition) and can't really remember all that happened in it. I will say that everything on your list is solid, besides Hare and Guu, and Tutu which I've not seen. I will admit that I'm not a big Tezuka fan, sorry, and even had troubles sitting through Black Jack. Of course there are more than enough people who believe Tezuka is the most important person in the industry, so I suppose I'm just missing something. I also don't really care for Dragon Half, Puni Puni, or Tylor, but that is also highly biased since I'm really picky with comedy. I also had some problems sitting through Utena, but have only seen a few episodes. |

Having seen both i'd advise you to get scrapped princess and paranoia agent. Both in my opinion will suit your tastes nicely.

Hare & Guu is hilariously awesome. It's more child-like than other anime but is funny and well written and animated. The character behavior is great and so is the anime style. I have the first 3 volumes (all that’s out on DVD so far) and it's all good.
The fist couple of episodes in vol-1 take a while to build up momentum but by the end of vol-1 things are moving good. |
