I kind of thought the movie death and rebirth was a Reader's Digest condensed version of the whole enchilada. So it either would be all I buy from that franchise, or buy everything else but that.

personally I'd sujest buying the platinum boxset with the movie End of Evangelion. There are only two movies; End of Eva and Death and Rebirth, and like the above poster said, Death + Rebirth is just a recap with some lil extra scenes. Platinum Collection also has the director's cut, if that's what you thought was movies.

Id suggest ypu buy the Platnium Thinpack or the separate volumes AND the double movie pack. The thinpack comes with the 4 directors cut episodes. Even though Death+Rebirth is sort of a recap, it helps lighten the load once youve completed the series. Buy both movies and the collection to fully experience NGE.

The probably with the move Death and Rebirth you don't really get that same depth of Shinji as in the series. Also if you do watch the end of evangelion you do really need to watch Death and Rebirth, hence otherwise you will be kinda drop off at this point EOE and be a little confused. But you can get by without watching D&R, and also the thin-pack of platinum edition is a great way to get the whole series at a great price.

I guest buying the thinpak. I don't want to sound rude, but why would someone spend 200 dollars on the new boxset. I mean there is already like 3 boxsets right or two? Well if i ever bought this anime, which i probably will never. I really didn't get into Eva, i liked the ending thought, *wishing they make the manga into a anime. But the thinpak is good and at a great price. Also i heard that Death and Rebirth is just a recap of the entire series. Don't know if it's true or not.

hmmm, maybe a poll should be taken on this, Razz he he

I'd say get the Platinum Thinpack along with End of Evangelion and don't worry about Death and Rebirth.
If you pay attention to the details throughout the series and understood everything, then EOE should be no problem.

However, lets not forget the controversy over the original ending (ep. 25 and 26). If you're like me, and it pisses you off, then you should either 1)rewatch the series up til at least ep. 25(yes, if anyone remembers my previous opinion, upon rewatching, I have decided that ep 25 gives a great view of the state of minds of each central character, but I still dislike ep 26); or 2) rent Death and Rebirth if you don't want to wait, and then watch EOE.

Even if you do like the original ending, I'd still suggest watching EOE simply because it is quite the spectacle, one of the most amazing peices of work I've ever seen in my life, in anything, not just anime.

Well, hope this helps in your decision.

If extras and features are important to you, the Platinum single discs have commentaries, interviews, booklets, and other fun stuff. It'll probably run around $130-$150, so if money is tight and the extras aren't too important, the Platinum thinpack should suffice. I bought the D&R/EOE pack just to be "complete," but the Platinum thinpack + EOE should be enough to get the full Evangelion experience. And yes, it pretty much is a necessity to watch both endings, the TV and the movie versions. Okay, maybe not a "necessity," but chances are the TV ending will leave you wanting something different.

Just so you know, off Amazon it was (maybe still is) cheaper to get the 6-disk set than to get the thinpak

And I'd say get the D+R/EoE 3-disk box set, as it isn't much more than just EoE, and you may as well

No don't buy that old war tank, that is an older version with not as good of quality transfer and sound. Here is the thin-pack edition of Evangelion the platinum edition. Here check out this page from ANN. I normally check here because it will list all the places to get a DVD from, that and then I go to ebay. Hope this helps you out.
