Quote: | This will be the first time that Gurren Lagann will be released in a complete DVD set with bonus features and collector's extras. |
The Bandai AL release came with features and extras. Ah, you mean physical crap that you can buy cheaper out of the box since the show's so old.
Quote: | •Subtitles: English (Bonus contents don't include English subtitles) |
Does that make them extraneous features rather than bonus features?

Fans in North America can take comfort knowing this Blu-ray box set will be released nearly the same time as Japan's release date. |
I don't think of it as a comfort. Maybe more of an extortion? And maybe AoA should have spent some more time on the subtitles?

“Gurren Lagann is a great series and we are confident these new box sets will satisfy the fan's requests for a collector's set” says Hideki Goto, the president of Animation Business of Aniplex of America. This release is a US and Canada Exclusive and available while supplies last. |
And it's merely a coincidence this came out after the Bandai budget version went bye-bye. I don't doubt people will buy it, "suckers", "every minute", "fools" and "money soon parted" and all that.
I know this is just copy but I have no idea who responsible for this badly written, edited and editorialized pat on the back example of it.

Don't know which one to get...:<
I have had the Japanese BD box on order for a few months but that DVD box is tempting. Hopefully the will use that new composite as the source for the DVDs.
I'll prob just cancel the JP box for now (the Macross Plus BD box comes out the on same day as Gurren Lagann so I will still have something to look forward to) and wait for some screenshots.

How many times does the word "import" need to be said before people stop bitching about it?

Infinity; you can't justify $500 for a tv series to a sane man. Retarded Japanese Economics be damned.

Ah. Okay then; let's all pack it up and move on to other entertainment not predicated on people paying dozens of dollars for a single episode. I hear Russian soaps are gaining ground.

I wonder if AoA will ever put out a domestic release, a standard, no-frills release on BD. And, if they did, how much they would charge for it? I further wonder if they *want* to get a domestic release rather than charging us up to our eyeballs and saying "it's imported" as a way of justifying it.
I don't trust Aniplex. Not one bit.

Geez man, why would they want to? Their whole business model is aimed at wooing collectors, not those who can barely afford to buy Anime in the first place. There is no reason for AoA to have no-frills releases. They are not trying to compete with FUNimation.
AoA are certainly trustworthy, because we know what they offer and what section of the market they cater to. We know what to expect from them.
After seeing so much irrational reasoning, it is becoming more and more obvious that the real motive behind the anti-AoA backlash is just subconscious jealousy of the well-off. There, I said it.

^ No, it's more like we aren't morons eager to bend over for Aniplex and pay $500 for a cartoon. It has nothing to do with jealosy. I can afford to buy it, but I'm not in the suckers market Aniplex aims at.

Wait, what? Jealousy? A little class envy, eh? Rise up, proletariat, and overthrow your masters! Ah... no.
What is so irrational about wanting to see a standard release of a mainstream anime in BD? If people want to pay out the nose for a super-pricey edition, then more power to them. I don't envy such people, nor am I jealous of them. I have no interest in owning ultra-premium editions of an anime series, and wouldn't even if I had far more disposable income than I do. I don't buy anime so that I can have postcards, t-shirts, or soundtracks. I buy them because I want to own the ACTUAL ANIME so that I can watch it whenever I want, wherever I want.
Also, I am not a "collector" insofar as I don't buy anime so that I can keep it on my shelf to look at or to show off to others, nor to resell it at a later time. I buy it, as I said, to watch it, and that's all. So to me it is extremely rational to want a publisher to provide a release that only includes what I want and nothing more, and to price that release accordingly. Most publishers are aware of this desire, and that is why most anime series have standard releases, and not only premium ones.
And finally, I am unware of AoA saying that they want to be some sort of upscale boutique that sells only the most exclusive releases of anime to the most discerning of collectors. While their *pricing* may indicate this, their actual PR does not (to my knowledge). So their words and deeds are at odds with one another.
But I do agree with you about one thing: I don't get the feeling that AoA has any intention of trying to get a domestic release of TTGL in BD. I don't think they have any interest in catering to the average anime fan who wants to own BD versions of mainstream anime. And yes, I am that fan.
