http://animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6417

I know the encyclopedia spells it with a "u" but I'm going by the official CD's English spelling. [Edit: Heh, changed the title in the encyclopedia after I wrote this] I would have made a topic on this before since I've been watching the raws, but I thought it would be better to wait until it came out subbed.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen it and what they thought of it. I've been looking forward to this anime since about December when I heard about it. Main reason is because this is the second anime (after Galaxy Angel) Ryoko Shintani (my favorite seiyuu who I'm a rabid fan of) has done the main character's voice. I would have liked it regardless of whether it was good or bad though so my opinion is biased... I wish it would have aired last season though, it has A LOT of competition airing this season and I'm guessing it will be ignored for the most part (has been out since April and wasn't subbed until a few days ago).

I've looked around and I've heard a lot of people refer to it as the "new" Galaxy Angel (although that should techinally belong to Galaxy Angel II) because the comedy is so similar in addition to having many of the the same seiyuu. It is also by the same director and many of the staff of Galaxy Angel worked on it too. So... has anybody seen it other then me?

I watched the first episode without subtitles (raw), so I only understood about 75% of the dialogue. I'll bet I missed a whole lot of puns and cultural jokes and stuff, but that's okay; I got the gist of what's happening...I think.

I'm guessing this is what happened in Episode 1, based on my limited knowledge of Japanese -

spoiler[
Two bumbling cat-worshipping villains (Leslie and Karen) are in a museum-ish place, and are trying to steal crowns. They can't make up their minds on which one to take, so they grab one of them and try to leave. Too bad they're clumsy, and they set off the alarm. They manage to get away, though.
Aoi Misuzu is the controlling and bossy captain of the tennis club. She complains to the advisor teacher (who, apparently, is shorter than her, why member Himeko hasn't shown up yet (does she really have to monitor EVERY member in her club? Or perhaps, something important is in Himeko's bag which needed to be delivered to Aoi-sama.)
Himeko wakes up late and somehow ends up cutting out a shape of a bear for some reason. Her friend with a cat fetish shows up and Himeko suddenly remembers she has to go to tennis club run by the tyrant Aoi-sama.
So, she runs off to tennis club only to bump into the two bumbling villains and somehow trades bags with them by accident in the process. She misses the bus because of this, and when the idiot-duo come back to reclaim their bag, Himeko runs away going 'Foreigners! Foreigners!'
She stumbles upon another 'weird foreigner' and is suddenly hungry. Then she bum[s into the villains again and somehow runs away in the end still having the other bag. She asks Leslie to decipher what the little girl said, and Leslie talks to her in about 5 different languages, to no avail (Ni Hao? The Naana didn't even look a shred Chinese). Since she's wearing the crown and her name is Himeko, she is greeted like a princess when she walks into the Tennis Club. So, whatever happened with Aoi-sama?
]

I haven't seen Galaxy Angel, so I can't use that to compare to this series, but having recently watched Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, this series reminds me of some of the quirky and random humor from there. This series could pretty much go any direction from here on out, and I doubt it will become serious anytime soon. And is it just me, or does Himeko have spoiler[a strong phobia against foreigners?]

I guess a central symbol in this anime is the cat. You have spoiler[cat-worshipping villains, a friend with a cat puppet on her hand, and cats walking around the tennis club.] Nice to see a series that is relatively easy to understand and doesn't make you think too much (without subtitles, I managed to have an easier time with this series than Haruhi or Higurashi WITH subtitles). It has heavy competition, but it's still a refreshing and relaxing series to watch.

One pun I actually did understand and actually laughed out loud at -

75% is far more dialogue then I understood (excluding the Engrish, which surprisingly there was quite a bit of). The first episode has been subbed fyi, which is the reason I made the topic now instead of when it was first released.

Going serious really wouldn't be the style of this anime. I honestly hope it doesn't since, imo, all of the Galaxy Angel episodes that have tried to go serious weren't that good. I would like it if they were to make one serious season of Galaxy Angel that followed the video game though.

I think she's just shy because she's not familiar with them. Somewhat related... In person, Ryoko Shintani (Himeko's voice) seems to really like foreigners I think. She seemed extremely excited in person to meet me (her first foreign fan she's met). She did seem a bit shy at first and not quite know what to say but she did try to speak some English (very amusing, in addition to being uber cute). She even wrote about me on her website... of course, if I was a seiyuu in Japan, I suppose I would also be pretty excited to have fans from overseas come and see me.

Found an amusing two page feature of Hime-sama no Goyoujin in the June issue of Newtype Japan (I got my copy pretty late). Apparently, poor Sabana wants her cat puppet back, and Aoi-sama won't let her have it. Crying or Very sad And Himeko and Naana are just staring in disbelief at what's going on, wearing big red crowns. Lots of text I can't read at the bottom left corner, and on the top right corner, in a pretty green bubble:

姫子!

Under that:

新谷良子 as 椿姫子
(Shintani Ryouko as Tsubaki Himeko)

Having watched Episode 1 and only episode 1 almost 3 weeks ago with no new episode in sight, I'm just going to go ahead and import the R2 DVDs.

I don't get Newtype, but I get Megami (no Wiki article yet) and have been getting a lot of nice pictures and centerfolds from Hime-sama Goyojin (as well as most other popular moe/bishoujo shows). Most of the stuff I can't read, but it's worth it for all the pictures/posters/centerfolds and other stuff that come with it. I don't subscribe to it actually, I buy each issue indivitually at a specialty shop somewhat close to where I live. But with the gas prices going up so high, I'm debating whether it would cost less to drive there or to pay shipping charges and import it. As it stands right now, driving is less money though...

I've finally gotten around watching some new April 2006 anime after a while, with this being one of them.

& damn, did I like it. Smile

I love comedy, especially random humour, which the first ep had. The spoiler[cutting of the newspaper article for no apaprant reason and Himeko not even realizing that she took the wrong bag for approx. 5 minutes] got me laughing. Nana was so adorable too, especially when spoiler[she slips & gets hit with the banana peel in 2 different scenes.] I haven't watched any of the Galaxy Angel series yet though, so I wouldn't be familiar with the jokes used in this series.

If only somebody else was subbing this quicker. *sigh*
