I read it up to about volume 2, in this time and place there are excorsists and there are demons. The demons can take on human form and work for the Thousand Year Count. Anyway the main character has the ability to see demons when they're trying to blend in, and he's trying to get to an excorsist council. He received this ability when he turned his father into a demon and was struck by him. You can ask the Count to bring a dead person back to life, unbeknowest to you their soul will be trapped in whatever form they're given, and tortured for eternity unless destroyed. Which is why he has the hand also, it's a demonic trait. And then he gets to his destination.
This is a poor summary, but it's my version of what I know, but I'm sure it gives you an idea until somebody else posts some more detail.

I read up to the 8th volume so far. It's pretty good. D. Gray-Man is like Hellsing except for the extreme bloodshed and Nazis.
Answer to what's going on in the beginning of the story.
In the beginning of the story (I'm assuming volume 1), Allen Wlaker is introduced by a female detective and that is when you learn of Akumas, aka demons, and the Anti Exorcist group that kills them. His sensei sent him on a mission to go to the exorcist organization and it just so happens that he stopped to rest in a town filled with Akuma's. Allen is broke so he rests in a haunted house that is really haunted by an akuma.
When Allen is found by the detective and taken to her house, he learns that her brother is an akuma. Then Allen explains to the detective that Akuma's exist if humans give into desire and sell their soul to The Millennium Earl, the bad guy. He then kills her brother which is now an akuma and sets his soul free. Afterwards, he continues on his journey to become an exorcist.
In the later volumes, you will only see action fighting killing, etc.
If you are into action/ religious mangas, then I say it is your moneys worth. If not, then don't buy it.
