I just finished watching Wolf’s Rain for the 2nd time. I have a few questions about the details of the plot.
Are all of the Nobles former wolves / descendents of former wolves? What was the difference between what Darcia was trying to achieve and what Kiba was? What did Kiba actually achieve at the end? Could it have turned out differently? What was the importance of the Owl? Thanks for any responses. |

I never got this impression but honestly I don't think the show really reveals enough about the Nobles to give a definitive answer either way.
spoiler[It's been a bit since I last watched the show so this impression may be wrong but I feel like Kiba was searching for paradise while Darcia was trying to force it into existence.]
spoiler[If Darcia hadn't interferred, I definitely believe the end would be completely different. As it was, I get the impression that Kiba reset that world and started our current one (a friend was the first to point out to me that the buildings seen in the show's opening and in the last scene are unlike anything seen in the cities of the main Wolf's Rain world but look a heck of a lot like our own world).]
spoiler[The owl is Darcia the First, as shown in a blink and you miss it scene. Not sure how much more there is than that.] |

I definitely recommend checking out the thread getchman linked, but I'll see if I can help out a bit as well^^
I think so, since they are referred to occasionally as "fallen wolves." There seems to be some fall of Lucifer symbolism here--the Nobles are descended from wolves who chose this world over Paradise. This is also why they rule over this world, and why spoiler[Darcia was able to become a wolf]. Though it would seem marie-antoinette has a different interpretation.
The difference is that Darcia is a Noble. A Noble cannot open Paradise. It has to be a wolf, which Darcia isn't, no matter how much he looks like one.
spoiler[He opened Paradise. However, Paradise was tainted by Darcia's eye, dooming it to eventually devolve into something similar to the wasteland we see in the series proper]. However, I like to think the next world will progress further, because the very first scene in the show shows Kiba in a previous world, dying alone in the snow. He hadn't even found Cheza, and was nowhere near the gate to Paradise. In the series proper, spoiler[he dies with Cheza, right in front of Paradise, surrounded by friends]. This seems to suggest that he will make further progress in this new world (spoiler[which is implied to be our own, with the wolf characters reincarnated as humans this time]--effectively throwing the ball in our court).
As marie-antoinette said, he is Darcia I. It is also worth noting that in Shinto animal symbolism, owls represent ignorance and death. Thus, the owl represents anything and everything that causes the wolves to stray from their path. Last edited by rheiders on Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:36 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I do like this idea and I could see it applying to the Darcia family themselves ... but I don't see what evidence there is about the other nobles that would link them to it as well. I did not know that symbolism around owls but I definitely think it does bring that damn creature a bit more meaning. Also, you both really need some spoiler tags in your posts. Saying spoilers in the title usually doesn't cut it here. |

But if he hadn’t even found Cheza in the scene at the start of ep1, how was it possible for the world to be reborn? It was said in the series that her “flower form” was the only thing that would be able to survive the freezing of the world. Also, I was under the impression that where he died in the first ep was where he died in the last. It was ice that turned into water surrounded by land just like in the last ep. How is it shown that they were different places? |

I don't really understand what makes the Darcias that different from other Nobles, except that Darcia the First spoiler[brought about the end of the world by trying to open Paradise], which wouldn't really change what he is beyond cursing him and his family.
I think the world is reborn regardless, but there's only one way to open the true "Paradise." They talk about this extensively in that old book club thread, which I was just skimming through, including the idea of there possibly being two Paradises. It's interesting stuff, but I admit it's kinda confusing and I don't think I'm smart enough (or have the time) to sum it up adequately^^; Worth looking through, though. As for the setting of the last few episodes, I got the impression that he was still underneath that rock formation in the OVA. The moon can be seen above, but they're essentially in a giant cave with rock walls around them. In the first episode, he is alone in the middle of nowhere, with miles of snow ahead of him, and miles of snow behind. Sorry I can't provide a more in-depth response. I've been slowly working my way through the series again since this season is its tenth anniversary, but I'm only two episodes in right now and haven't watched it in a while. Thus, I'm a bit hazy on some details^^; |
