NEWS: Sony Board Chairman Howard Stringer to Retire June

So,Howard Stringer's going to retire from Sony in June. This guy's had an interesting life. From what I learned about him,he was born in 1942 in Wales. He moved to the United States in 1965 where he later served during the Vietnam War. He worked at CBS,starting working on "The Ed Sullivan Show" answering backstage phones. Eventually,he'd become President of CBS and bring David Letterman there.
In 1985,he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He was involved in broadcasting until the late 1990's,that he came to Sony,eventually becoming it's president and chairman of the board. Now,he's going to retire. Quite a life Mr. Stringer's had. Quite a life indeed.

good riddance, I believe Sony had many missteps under his tenure the least of which was the disastrous psp go or the over priced launch of the ps3. Quite frankly Sony wont go down so quickly, but under his watch Sony went from a market leader to a company that has been listed on several 'big companies likely to fail' pieces.

You were very lenient, harsher words were needed. To b fair he was not the only culprit, at least when it comes to the gaming market.

Good. It is time for Sony to begin a new era and start fresh, and Howard Stringer leaving is definitely a positive step in that direction.

Erm, Sony was in a bad way long before Mr. Stringer took the rudder in his hands. The very fact he took over and not another Japanese CEO should be shouting volumes to you about all that. if anything he's at least steered Sony round the rocks and kept it in deep enough waters, else Sony would have been down in the mud long ago. Sure there has been a few knocks to the hull with psp and not allowing older PS2 games to play on PS3 and pricing etc. But that's not all Sony does for profits. They are a big player in film and television, both domestic and industrial broadcast. Many corporate and independant TV facilities round the world run on Sony platforms and infrastructure, with one where I'm Senior Technical Director being one of them. One of their broadcast R&D facilities is based right in my home town of Basingstoke where 1080i was born. Wink

PS3 was not overpriced

it just wasn't worth the money

don't confuse the two

For those who are shouting "BLLAARRG THAT WELSH F*CK STRINGER IS GONE HOORAY 4 SONY", you need to realize that it was during his tenure that most of the divisions of Sony began having breakdowns in communication, not truthfully reporting on developmental progress, and basically weaseling their way out of being supervised when they were in danger of fouling up.

This is what has since led to Sony's computer, TV, and digital music divisions almost collapsing entirely, and also why the original PS3 launch was such a hilarious disaster. The overpowered CELL processor? Not reliably handing out reliable SDKs to developers? FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS? Yeah that was all Sony Computer Entertainment, and it was all them possibly not letting Stringer or anyone high on the corporate ladder know about it earlier, thus possibly having the situation rectified and disaster averted.

As someone mentioned earlier, Stringer was the one doing as much as he could keeping the company afloat during its (continuing) bad years.
