Going to take my vacation in Japan for about 2 weeks, and I'm planning on spending about 200-300 dollars on manga alone. On the top 10 rated manga, what are the ratings based on? I'm trying to make sure I don't waste money on something crappy. I have Dragon Ball, Death Note, Ah, My Goddess!, Angel Sanctuary, XXXholic, Monkey Turn, Please Teacher and Cowboy Bebop on my to buy list. My current collection consists of Fruits Basket and One Piece. Any suggestions for other good manga would be appreciated Wink

You once told me that manga was way cheaper in Japan, but how much is it? All those titles would put you way over the $200 mark here in the states.

Wouldn't this fit better in the manga section? OH, and buy Dragon Head.

Personally, I'd buy things that aren't licenced in the US, which virtually all the titles on your list are.

5$ is what you would pay for a freshly packed totally new manga. What I would recommend is Honey and Clover. Should be pretty easy to get in the Book Off chain is used manga. Also try to get some new volumes of Berserk, because as I understand it will take literally years before those appear in the US. Other than that, I would really advise you to try to get WHOLE series. So aim at something low volume. Those would look killer on your shelf, a whole raw of a completed series, even though in Japanese. So Try some One Shots while you`re at it. In the Manga Recommendation thread you will find lots of ideas. Best of luck.

I paid about 300 yen for Naruto down there, equ. of 3 bucks. Most of the stuff I looked at in Mandarake was in that range.

Instead of buying actual Japanese manga (unless you can read them), I'd get artbooks and cells. I don't know if you've picked out where to shop yet, but I really suggest Mandarake. It's in Shibuya, and although it's hard to find it's worth the trip, plus the sales persons are kind to foreigners. Their cell collection is really amazing, too - there was a lovely one of Asuka from NGE in full-color inside of her mech. It was over $1,000 state-side, though. And when I was there they had one from Nausicaa going for $108 state-side ((which I still hate myself for not getting)). But they had just about every manga imaginable and a large selection of art books, which they are more than happy to point you to ((seeing as it must be their most costly section)). I spent most of my cash on art books, and I'm really happy with what I got.

Agreed, why buy something that's readily available here in the states? Sure, it costs less and all, but you'll have a chance to buy liscened series in the states/europe/whereveryoulive, whereas this is your only opportunity to get unliscened series, and for just as cheap.

Anyway, as far as unliscened manga go, I've heard good things about a series called Fire Candy. (Not listened in the encyclopedia.)

I wouldn't go with other people's reviews, top ten lists, or whatever else there is. I usually just go with what looks cool or a factual summary of some i've read online. I also reccommend ones that arent in english. Some ones I wish they would put in engilsh are the final fantasy one (I think its XI) and definitely the Zelda ones. So if you want to know what I would get if I went to Japan, it would be the Zelda ones.
