Summer...Fall... I care not so long as Aniplex repeats the spiffy global release practice. I caught the two films but didn't see the "preview" for the next one, so I'm excited to go in completely blind and see what SHAFT has in store!!!
On that note, has anyone heard ANYTHING about Aniplex releasing the first two theatrical films on home release? Are we waiting till all 3 films are out to do a set of some sort? I know the Japanese release has to come out first... I'm so in the dark....

Odds are they aren't going to say anything about a US release until after the Japanese home release, which I haven't even heard when that's gonna be yet. It should be soon, but things in Japan take longer to go from theater to DVD/BD release than in the US. From what i've seen anyway.

Australia's Madman Entertainment have announced that they've licensed the first two films for DVD and BD release. Since the first two movies started hopping around the US at about the same time that they screened in Japan, I'm wondering if the US video release will end up being an Aniplex import release, rather than a later domestic set. Maybe they'll wait to do a full three-movie set, but I'm expecting a release of the first two movies to come shortly before the third movie hits theaters. It's just something of a wild, uninformed guess, though. ^^; Once the release date and details of the Japanese BDs are revealed, it might be possible to make a prediction. If they've got English subtitles on them... I'm hoping for an import release, just because I'm impatient to own them, but if the bilingual domestic release sold well enough... Maybe they'll do both? ^^;; |

The two current movies cover the same content as the television show and end at the same point. So is this third movie entirely original content? Given how Madoka ended, I don't see much rationale for a continuation except to make money.

The third movie is original content, yeah, and I can't figure out anything they could possibly continue on to, but whatever.

The movies were MADE to prepare for this third movie, which will be original content. In an interview in the Kirara Magica manga magazine, I believe, Urobuchi said that he hadn't planned for a sequel, but when he saw the finished product of the anime, an idea came to him and he was excited to try it out. It wasn't until the group was approached with the idea of making a sequel series that they looked at it, but it was determined too short for a full series, so they decided to make a high-budget film out of it. Then one of them (I forgot who--Shinbo?) said that if they were going to have the third movie on the big screen, they should put all the movies on the big screen to make it more accessible to the mainstream audience (the current release and lack of television broadcasts during the day make it hard to re-interest the public in something that has already passed--Madoka's mainstream popularity was already a miracle in itself). So yes, they're milking it. But I see nothing wrong if Urobuchi is enthusiastic about another idea he's had and if they intend to make the series more accessible to the mainstream audience. These movies were practically all the series needed to reach the kind of popularity of evangelion and beyond in Japan. And more fans of a good anime is never a bad thing, right? [EDIT] To clarify what I mean: A lot of people at least knew Madoka's name and were interested in watching it. However, the original broadcasts were at night and it's still too difficult to re-run such a violent/dark show during the day, so even though it caught the eye of the mainstream public, many people still only knew its reputation. Not to mention, considering how expensive the BD/DVD releases are in Japan, you won't see anyone buying the releases when they've never seen it for themselves and don't have the time to sit down and watch a full-fledged series. Thus, releasing these movies in theaters to a wider audience makes it very much more accessible to those who haven't seen it yet. Think of it as both a good business decision that benefits both the audience and the creators. |
