I remember there were rumors that this was the last one though, so maybe they accidentally got wind of that? Kinda hard to believe that'd be the case when they'd be talking to the Japanese publishers and should know better though...

So this isn't the end of the series then though?

No. It's pretty much been stated a number of times now, by multiple people that there is more novel-material for Haruhi on the way.

It's been about 1 and 1/2 since the last light novel was released in Japan. That's a pretty big gap between novels. But you'd think if it was the last one, there would of been a big deal about it. Also, this is the combination of what was released as 2 volumes in Japan. (10 & 11)

The book was originally published in Japan as two volumes in 2011, but according to Amazon's listing, the U.S. version will feature both volumes in one.

Wow, why the hell would they do that? It's going to look stupid having one giant Haruhi novel among all the other novels.

Wait what? Who cares? You'd rather buy two instead of just 1? What? Oh no one book will look bigger next to others, like books normally on a shelf do.

The novels have got progressively thicker as the series has gone on anyway. Looking at my shelf, Intrigues is almost twice as thick as Melancholy.

Ok ok ok. People may be getting confused by things here.

In Japan the final volume was split up into "The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya part one", which was volume 10, and "The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya part two", which was volume 11, which also finished the series.

I think its a great move to release the book stateside as one complete volume. It saves confusion.

This kinda reminds me of Haruki Murukami's 1Q84 novel, which was released as three volumes in Japan, but stateside was released as vols 1 and 2 combined and then volume 3 released separately, and then a few months later was re-released as all 3 volumes in one, and then a few months after that was released in a limited edition box set with all three volumes as separate novels.

Everything other than the bolded area is correct. There is a roundtable discussion in the novel fanbook released in June 2011 (recorded April 2011) where Tanigawa talks about writing the next volume and verbally tells the plot to the two editors and Ito. There's also this tweet from the Sneaker Bunko (the publishing label for all the Haruhi novels that "The series is continuing!" I would believe Japanese sources before NA licensors.

Just ordered the two most recent volumes yesterday (along with two most recent volumes of Spice & Wolf and Book Girl) so I should be all caught up by the time the last two volumes come around.

Can't believe I went through all of 2012 without buying any of these...

No bookstores in my area have been selling any of these. I have the first 6 volumes in Japanese, which I've read, but I feel so behind...

Combining them is fine and all, although I was kind of hoping for them to be split, but packaged together. That way the book isn't too big and I get both covers (although I guess they could combine the covers).
