While I'm sure some people will think it's unfair that a Ghibli movie lost, Wreck-it Ralph really is one of the best animated movies to come out since Up, it absolutely deserves to dominate every award show out there, it was amazing! Can't wait to buy it on DVD soon! It has the sort of writing that not only movie writers should take note of, but video game writers too (especially in regards to how to make interesting female characters without just sticking an F cup on them)

A kid-friendly family movie about silly video games references beat a somber, down to earth drama about two young teens who have to deal with the fact they might be comitting incest in a kids movie category. How surprising

I smell angry fanboys up in here.
Ones that apparently didn't even see Wreck-It Ralph.
Honestly. What the hell is up with the anti-American attitude up in here? Now, I'm not one to get choked up over red-white-&-blue either, but there seems to this whole stigma of anything American-produced here. Like, Japan > All.
It's awful and obnoxious.

Just because people don't like an American movie doesn't make them "anti-American" or "fanboys". People are free to have their own opinion even if doesn't agree with your own.

Seen both Poppy Hill and Ralph, and between those it may be a toss-up. But ParaNorman is still a better film than either.

You mean Jane Lynch's character? The sprites of Sugar Rush are just that, it's only a racing game with zero story. Otherwise WiR is a film, not a video game, and its story and characterization have nothing to do with modern video game scripts, dialog, or design. It's just an homage to arcades.

The Annies are US awards voted in the US by animators for animators - animators from all around the world.

That's true. Same as not liking some Japanese stuff doesn't make them anti-Japan or fanboys. It's when they don't like virtually everything that makes them that.

Any of those would've been worthy. ParaNorman won its share of awards.

See, no. When someone clearly demonstrates a strong dislike of anything American produced, especially when they haven't even been exposed to it, that isn't an opinion. It's bigotry, closed-mindedness, and baseless hate.
It's actually sort of fascinating, really. From a psychological (and neurological standpoint), do you know brains actually work harder - process harder - to disregard something than to accept something? Simply put, hating something requires commitment on our part, more often than accepting or understanding. And everyone says it's in our nature to hate from the get-go - something medically proven to be untrue. The brain has to work more towards hating than liking.
When somebody is putting forth commitment towards hating, or disliking something they know almost next-to-nothing about, those are the sort of people that don't receive my sympathy, or even understanding. If you can't provide a valid, analytical reason regarding specified source for why you dislike something, then frankly, your opinion isn't worth sparing a thought on. Now, mind you, you or anyone is free to have it. But just the same, I'm free to call it for the crap it potentially could be.

This. I find it hard to believe any other film could have beaten this out for Best Animated, but, well, then there's Disney. Not that I really invest in these award gigs, but sometimes I wish Disney would go a year without producing anything so we could find out what it's like to be surprised at the results. As it is, I can only imagine which way the Academy will swing.

Don't care for either. As long as Brave won nothing, I'm happy!

American films winning American awards? Next you'll tell me the rain is wet and dogs bark.
Don't worry though, Poppy Hill won the Tokyo Anime Award. It got the proper recognition in it's home country.

Brave will win the Academy Award for "STRONG INDEPENDENT SCOTTISH WOMAN WHO DON'T NEED NO MAN" and because it isn't Cars 3. Especially because it isn't Cars 3. I could also see them being hipster and vote for Wreck-it Ralph because they don't want Pixar to win. The other entries have no chance.

While it does stink that Poppy Hill got beat out by Wreck-it Ralph, it's not that surprising since, most people may not realize, that's not a major wide release movie. Wreck-it Ralph was a major wide release movie, and it was something that I got to see twice with my friends since I truly enjoyed it.
Had Poppy Hill been a major wide release movie, I definitely would've gone to see it. Alas, what happened, happened, but don't forget, it still got some nominations, so at least it shown some good merit to be recognized as a good film.

Awards always seem more like politics than anything else. I doubt most critics care for them beyond 'give it to Pixar/Disney by default. I imagine the only reason Rango won last year was because Johnny Depp was so heavily involved, and Cars seems to be the only Pixar movie that's socially acceptable to not like and still keep your critic badge.
