Very nice essay. I'm not a fan of the anime anymore, for its repititiveness, but I did see some of the new dub, and I agree that it was terrible. While it may not have been entirely Pokémon USA's fault, they are a major contributor to the destruction of the dub. Really, though, it's probably because of 4Kids that the original VAs were removed from the dub when 4Kids lost the license. I guess all the fans can do anymore is try to get Pokémon USA to change the VAs with some well-written letters. Don't put too many "negative connotations" in there. That never helps. I would know. ^^;; Hey, maybe we can get some uncut DVDs with the Japanese version on them!

If 4kids screwed Pokemon USA, why should the latter company be obligated to make it up to the fans? It'll just lead to 4Kids extorting Pokemon USA for more money than the property's worth.
If anything, you should be sending the hate mail to 4Kids for being sore losers. |

Well, in the end, the fans still want a decent product. Last night(lucky coincidence I have this recent allegory) I was in a restaurant with my wife and waiting service. When I asked that someone take our order, the waitress said "I'm sorry, I have a really large group here, as soon as I finish settling their bill, I'll be with you." She wasn't outright rude, but rather curt. We had already been waiting too long, so I said, "Well, could you send another waiter or waitress to take the order? You have plenty of staff." To which she replied, "Sorry, I have to finish with them first." My answer, "They're not my problem," and we left. Quite simple, the reasons aren't the customer's problem. You can have all the excuses in the world, if you don't deliver good service or good product, you will lose customers. So yeah, bite 4Kids' head off for all I care. But at the same time, warn PKUSA that they need to shape up... -t Last edited by Tempest on Mon May 01, 2006 9:52 pm; edited 1 time in total |

And now... the rest of the story...
I don't really watch Pokemon anymore, but I have a friend who does (and is a mutual LJ friend), so I read about this a few days back. Supposedly, the new voice actor of Brock claimed on the Serebii.net forums that they had the non-compete clause. However, Rachael Lillis, the old voice actor for Jesse/Misty posted on her Yahoo! Group that not only is there no direct non-compete clause (the wording she uses makes it sound like there's something restrictive in there, though it's not cut and dry), but no one at PUI contacted the old voice actors about it. Plus, Maddie Blaustein (former VA for Meowth) confirmed Lillis's story on the Serbii.net forums. If you're curious, I found this info here. Hope this helps clear up some stuff. |

It's out already? Drat, now I have to YouTube it.
I was one of those complain-about-the-dub fans in the 4Kids days (particularly because there are certain voices I can't STAND), but I will admit I'm somewhat attached to those old voices. However, I'm going to try to view these new voices without any bias. The essay gave good insight, I think. I hope that if they really ARE that bad, then those guys can improve! |

I got this e-mail from Veronica Taylor today:
She is a fantasic woman and voice actor.... if you could please just take a few moments and drop an e-mail for her.... she would be very grateful, she loved playing Ash and it is really hurting her that the part is getting taken away from her: I have just received information that needs to get out to as many people as possible right away. If it's not too much trouble, could you forward this? Thanks!!!! At this moment Cartoon Network is talking with Pokemon USA and Nintendo about negotiating a deal for next season. Whether they know that the show they potentially acquire is a very badly done 'fake' is unknown. We need as many people as possible to flood them with emails letting them know that the 'special' we all saw on Saturday was beyond unacceptable. The actors, other than being lackluster and unable to fit the flap, lacked any emotion or character. The script was amateurish and flat. There was no direction. The Pokemon themselves all sounded incredibly different from the original show and video games. It was more violent than any other Pokemon episode has ever been. It was in no way up to the standards which have been set over the past eight years by 4kids, Nintendo and the WB. Are we all expected to simply sit by as Pokemon USA lies to everyone, saying the show will be "exactly the same", even though they have replaced every single element? We have now seen, through the fiasco which was the 10th anniversary special, that this is far from the truth. Please send emails immediately to the two executives at Turner Network (below) and warn them before they make a mistake they will certainly regret for a very long time. Bring Pokemon back to 4kids before it's too late. Thank you in advance! Sincerely, Veronica Taylor Email to: |

You know what's funny, that many of the older people that didn't like the dub in the first place when Pokemon started now want the old actors back
I used to watch the show back in the day of Saturday mornings, but the new dub was curious to me, so I decided to stay up one morning to see what all the fuss was about...and they were bad........ Anyways, hopefully they will get the old VAs back so that Pokemon can be what it used to be before the new dub. I believe that even though some VAs are bad, when they stick with the same character for so long, they become part of the show and fans are used to those voices. Take Ash from Pokemon, I mean it was a bad dub at the beginning of the series, and 8 years later, you can't see Ash with another voice... It's funny how things work sometimes |

Crap. We incurred the wrath of Chris. Run away!!!!
It does seem that things get worse when they become second-hand. Wonder why that is? |

I dunno, but this sounds more like a plus to me. Don't get me wrong, Pokemon is and should be for a younger audience, but if Pokemon USA is getting rid of 4Kids' ridiculously inconsistent editing practices, then that's a step in the right direction. It's just a shame they couldn't bring the original English VAs with them. For the record, I've only seen clips of the new dub on YouTube, and I agree it's awful. When I first heard Brock's new voice, I seriously expected him to say, "Scruff, McGruff, Chicago Illlinois, Six-Oh-Six-Five-Two!" |

Though my love for Pokemon has been dead for many years now, even I have to hate the new voices.
Chris is completely right on every account. Misty is so-so but that can't stop the torture from the rest. Listening to the new dub brings up the horrors I had to face when watching Dic's Knights of the Zodiac. (Hyoga, so so bad....) I hope Pokemon USA understand the destruction they have brought on to the anime. Though the series is not as popular as it was, this is the final nail in the coffin and the jumping of the shark. For those wishing to protest, you might win or lose but I'm done. Goodbye, Pokemon. We remember the memories. |

Even a bad dub is preferable to a worse one. |

After seeing a few clips myself, it's not as "ear-bleeding" as everyone's reactions made it out to be. But it's certainly a step down.
The main problem I see is that the new VAs aren't actually acting their characters. They're trying to act the old VAs that played those characters. If they stopped trying to pass themselves off as the originals, and just brought out the Pokemon characters with the full range of their own talents (however meagre those might be), then I think we could have a dub that works. |

I agree with you considering I had the same situation you did but at a Red Robins. The only difference was that We already had our food, but the waitress didn't offer us refills, didn't offer us fries, and since there was 4 of us (2 couples sitting across from each other) she didn't ask if we wanted seperate checks. Yet she still had time to bring a cumulative bill in the middle of our lunch. No tip for you. I guess the allegory for that would be that those who saw the show, will not bother buying it if they didn't like what they saw/heard... well that was horrible but Zac's was better. I was surprised by this article just because I saw Ash's face, a face I had not seen in a really long time, on the front page of ANN and the "WTF" made me laugh. But once I saw the word "Prostitue", I knew I had to check out the article. I had not planned on watching the show ever again, but I think I want to now just to hear the alleged horrible voice acting. |

The new Pokemon dub is pretty weak, or at least that’s what everyone tells me. I haven’t seen it yet, though, and I probably never will.
So let me get this straight, you haven't heard the new dub or seen a single episode or outtakes featuring the new dub, but yet you've written an opinion piece on it?! I'm sorry, this is not journalism..... in the least. |

Why did you guys change the title/pic? "Woo" or "What" does not make it as interesting to read, althought the prostitute part still does.
Edit - Nevermind, now the prostitute thing was removed. I guess it's cool if you're trying to make ANN available to people of all ages. Last edited by joel_s95387 on Tue May 02, 2006 12:29 am; edited 2 times in total |
